Make Government Schools Compete or Die

If you pay taxes and take responsibility for getting your own children to and from school, you may be interested in learning that the government spent $23,233,698,000 in the 2012-2013 school year transporting other people's children to and from public schools around this country.

When those students got off the bus, taxpayers spent even more money on them — for things other than education in a classroom.

For example, according to the Digest of Education Statistics published in December by the federal government's National Center for Education Statistics, the government spent $21,862,081,000 in the 2012-2013 school year on food services in public schools.

That included $10,110,833,000 on supplies for these food services, $6,607,701,000 on salaries for the people working in them, and $2,529,156,000 on their employee benefits.

Students in public schools today can get both a free ride and a free (or subsidized) lunch.

But taxpayers cover the costs.

  1. As a working class private school parent,I feel like i am entitled to a school voucher.I am paying for these failing public schools that I cannot even use.

  2. 1:20 You can certainly send your child to any public school in your area/district. You haven chosen not to, and spend money outside of your taxes on a private school. I am sure you have your reasons, and I am certain they are valid, but again, you made the choice to pay extra for private school. You should not feel entitled to a voucher as long as it is a choice you make.

Regardless, it will be an interesting subject to watch.

  3. 2:00, I see your point, but disagree. The private school I sent my son to for 2.5 years charged just under what the public school system spent per student yet provided a 10x quality product. Public schools get their money on a guaranteed basis, Private schools must out perform all others to attract a student body. As a single father, I couldn't afford to continue paying the extra costs, but the few years I was able to I'm sure steered him in the right direction he's on today.

Why force all to pay for garbage when vouchers would put ALL schools on an equally competitive playing field? We need quality in education, not just a head count and a pass to the next grade to make room for the next herd.

    1. Private schools also have the ability to easily removed the trash from the school or not accept the trash in the 1st place. Public Schools do not have that luxury. If they did, every public school could be just as good as any private school.

  4. School vouchers now!!get it on the ballot!put the power back in the people's hands to fund the schools with the best performance... that's the bottom line. Current institution wants to continue the waste fraud and obvious abuse of a so called education system. IN effect it is child abuse to allow it to continue.

  5. GREAT POINT, 6:48! If ALL schools were competitive, and your non-student trash is kicked out if one, he would have the choice to join another, and the school of choice would be able to put a probationary period on any student.

    What a great concept!
