Fidel Castro, Cuba's longtime revolutionary leader, dies at 90

(CNN)Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has died at age 90, Cuban state media reported.

"There are few individuals in the 20th century who had a more profound impact on a single country than Fidel Castro had in Cuba," Robert Pastor, a former national security adviser for President Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, told CNN in 2012.
"He reshaped Cuba in his image, for both bad and good," said Pastor, who died in 2014. "Cuba will be a different place because he lived and he died."

Castro lived long enough to see a historic thaw in relations between Cuba and the United States. President Barack Obama announced in December that the United States would re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba and urged Congress to lift a 52-year-old economic embargo.

  2. Wow?!? How does one have so much hate for a person that simply has a difference of opinion with respect to politics? What if your child is a democrat or gay or transgender? Before you even start with your BS, I am a republican on economic issues but DGAF about the right wing religion/abortion/gay agenda. Get over it.

    1. 3:05am...clearly you have NO understanding of the profound and debilitating impact Castro had on the people of Cuba. He destroyed 3 generations of his people. Your ignorance of the reality does not diminish it. Leave your LGBT crap out of it.

    1. Really? So Raul Castro is going to establish a democracy now that Fidel is dead? Does no one keep up with current events?

  4. Too bad his brother is continuing the torture session, though. Cuba is still not free of their oppression. Raul needs to go as well.

  5. 5:03 hit the nail on the head. Good riddance of Castro who nearly started WWIII with a nuclear exchange with the US with the communist Russians.

  7. Castro ran a brutal, totalitarian dictatorship that removed from the Cuban people all freedoms that we in this country hold so dear. Why would any citizen of this country try to defend him? Get your ideology out of your ass and open your eyes to reality. His good buddy Che got his a long time ago. Too bad it took so long for the world to be rid of Fidel.

  8. Raul has one foot in the grave already, too. It won't be long before Trump and his capitalist cronies, that are going to help him run the country, will be making deals with the Cubans to build new hotels and casinos, and it will be just like the old days. Hell, up to now, it has been what Trump does best. Only his kids will have to do it while DJT is president. The latest golden egg has just dropped into the Trump family's pocket. And I'm not even a Trump protester. I voted for him. But as the consummate deal maker, he will be all over getting the capitalists back on the island.

  10. Wow, I see the brainwashing is still in full effect. This man survived 638 assassination attempts. True, he cracked down on dissent, rumored to have killed and/or jailed journalists and political opponents. He gave his people free healthcare, under his rule the country achieved a 99.7% literacy rate, one of the highest in the world (the U.S. only has an 86% literacy rate).

Invited Russia to place nuclear missiles on his island to stop U.S. interference with the country. Dramatically increased the number of doctors in Cuba, provides more medical personnel to developing countries than all the G8 nations combined.

I'm not necessarily cheerleading for this man, but I don't trust my own government to tell me the truth as it has demonstratively so many, many times in the past it will not do.

They lived, and survived for 50 years under a U.S. embargo, that was recently lifted in 2015. Since the U.S. has an established history of removing/killing nation leaders who won't "play ball with them", I find any statements from our government suspect.

Just look at the Saddam and Gaddafi cases recently. You really think their killings was because of WMD's or terrorism? I have a marina in Arizona to sell you if you do.

  11. Don't confuse these lucky to have made it beyond 10th grade rednecks with facts about Cuba. I've been there several times in the past 15 years. Not at all like what we have been dis-informed by our government.

  12. I saw pictures earlier of Cuba. They said they are mourning for 3 or 4 days. Looks more like people are celebrating than mourning.

  13. I worked in Miami in 1963 and my boss was an American citizen who was Cuban. Castro had seized all the private property in Cuba and killed or arrested thousands of its citizens. Refugees were pouring into Miami in leaky boats with nothing but the clothes on their backs and my boss was struggling to help as many as he could. I saw this, I know it is true.
Castro was a vicious dictator and an enemy of this country for colluding with Russia in preparing an attack on this country.
There is nothing good to say about the man. I am not at all surprised to see Cuban exiles dancing in the streets in Miami.

  18. At the time of the Cuban revolution Cuba was a playboy island for American politicians and businessmen. They could go to Cuba and drink, do drugs, gamble and solicit prostitutes. The government was a puppet for Washington and the farmers and rural inhabitants of Cuba lived in poverty. The Castro's and Che Guevara led a peasant uprising and threw out the people running the country. The Cubans in America who were angry were angry because they were doing well under the old system. Cuba never launched an attack against the US but the US launched multiple attacks and embargos against Cuba. They turned to the Soviets because it was the best guarrenty of their continued survival, not because they were hard-core socialists. They even became distrustful of the Russians as time went on but had to keep the Revolution intact. That is the reason for the deaths too. Most of those who were killed were deserters and traitors. Murder was not the policy of the Cuban revolution, but revolution is bloody. Keep in mind it was Bolivian communists that killed Che and cut off his hands to send to the American CIA.

And this was the second attempt by Fidel Castro to overthrow the gov't ran by his predecessor, Batista. (who was a tyrant but U.S. Gov't approved) The first attempt failed and Fidel went to prison for a time. When he was released he eventually went to Mexico, recruited some like-minded people, trained them, bought a boat and went back to Cuba for his second attempt to overthrow Batista and succeeded.

Unfortunately, he did some of the same things as his predecessor when he gained power. (Even though the U.S. gov't tried to assassinate him over 600 times. It makes me wonder if he was so hated by Cubans, why didn't they try to get rid of Castro).

Regardless, he remained in power for over 50 years, saw 10 U.S. presidents come and go, and did what he had to do to stay in power.

Even if he killed 78k people, or ten times that amount, the total number of people killed is still much less than any of the wars that have occurred in this world, and even other revolutions.

I'm sure that does not comfort the families of those that were killed but it is what it is.

Now the question is, or should be, who will eventually take over the Cuban gov't (Raul won't be in power long) and will they be like Castro and Batista or will they help the people and the country? Will they have an election, (fair or otherwise) or will they become just another puppet of D.C.? And what will Russia contribute to all of it?

    Interesting times.

  20. Blah, blah, blah. Listen, Castro is finally a good communist, because he is dead. And, I am not happy that he is dead because he was a communist dictator, I am happy, glad, thankful that he is dead because he was a scumbag of a human being!
