Donald Trump has opened up an 8-point lead on Hillary Clinton in Iowa, according to a Monmouth University pollreleased Thursday.
Mr. Trump led Mrs. Clinton by a 45 percent to 37 margin in Iowa, with Libertarian Gary Johnson at 8 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein at 2 percent, according to the poll of likely voters conducted Monday through Wednesday.
That’s a shift from July, when Mr. Trump had held a 2 point, 44 percent to 42 percent lead over Mrs. Clinton.
Mr. Trump’s support among Republicans actually declined to 81 percent, from 87 percent in July, while Mrs. Clinton’s standing among Democrats improved from 86 percent to 91 percent.
But Mr. Trump now leads Mrs. Clinton by 15 points among independents, compared to a 4-point edge in July.
