Route 50 To Get New Traffic Light At Sixty Foot Road

BERLIN — To enhance safety, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will install a new traffic signal at the US 50 and Sixty Foot Road intersection, in eastern Wicomico County, just west of MD 354 (Powellville Road).

In response to requests from the local community, SHA studied the intersection to determine if a signal or other changes would enhance safety. SHA traffic engineers analyzed a variety of factors including sight distance, pedestrian activity, crash history, proximity to schools, daily traffic counts, turning movements, physical geometry of the intersection and seasonal impacts.

SHA engineers determined that a signal, along with turn lanes and additional signs, will improve traffic flow and safety through the intersection. SHA announced the decision at a meeting with local elected officials and citizens at the Pittsville Fire Department last night.

  1. It's about time! Thank you to all who worked to make it happen.

  2. How many deaths did it take?

  3. I agree its about time, now if we can just get the grass cut on our roads that'd be nice.

  4. Congratulations. Whined and cried enough to make the government believe the intersection is the cause of so many accidents and not the idiots who wrecks fault. Now more money wasted. More chances to make revenue with infractions like running the light or stopping on a white line. Not mention another pole to hit and replace when another accident happens!

  5. I'm sorry I do not think it will help.

  6. 4:43PM, you are such a positive thinker. An accident there may happen again, but this MAY help to prevent that from happening.

  7. Light may not prevent all, but will certainly help. This my friends is what the government should be doing. Those of you that are bent out of shape about this need to soul search.

  8. Let's all pray that the light will reduce the accidents....thus, reduce the deaths and injuries. Lots of negative comments from people that are unnecessary. I see that on almost every local issue posted on this website.

  9. 4:57. I'm a realistic person. I'm not naive. I know the truth. Anything may help. but the probability is zero. Fact is that the accidents are from careless people! Just as guns don't kill people do.

  10. If the drivers were as idiotic as the commenter suggested, there would be tons of accidents at other RT 50 intersections. But they are few and far between compared to sixty foot road, westbound especially. The road is at an angle and drivers misjudge it. Of course a light is needed. It's just sad it took so long. My cousin was killed at that intersection, along with many others.

  11. A little off topic here, but as drove home from Annapolis this afternoon The amount of people texting and swerving all over the highway was shocking.

  12. @7:44 you nailed the real problem!!! I'm sure the next complaint will be how the traffic backs up on rt 50 during the summer. Is there that much cross traffic on sixty foot Rd to warrant a signal there?? I think the texting and everyone on such a hurry to get somewhere is real issue

    1. There is a lot more traffic than you think. Sixty Foot Road turns into Gumboro Road, and is a main road into Delaware.

  13. 8:51 Yes there is enough traffic. That road is heavily traveled. Many use it to go to or from Millsboro and other towns in Delaware and vise versa.

  14. Where in the world would someone from delaware be heading cutting through sixty ft road?? Again take five minutes leave a little earlier

  15. Sixty foot road is at no angle! Woodyard in Willards is at an angle!

  16. 1019 Woodyard is impossible! Another one is Gumboro Road at the intersections of Main St and Railroad Ave in Pittsville. You take your life into your own hands at the intersection.

I do believe this is just the beginning of a large amount of red lights on Rt 50. Soon Forest Grove and Rt 50, Willards will have one, then one in Whaleyville, bc of all the campers.

  17. Next y'all will be complaining about the traffic back ups because of lights. Close off access to 50 and build a bridge over the highway.

  18. Since they are putting in a red light is the state going to get rid of the stupid mandatory headlight law? Isn't this the intersection that caused the idiotic revenue generator in the first place?

  19. Why can't the county issue dump stickers to an individual instead a vehicle ,I should be able to drive what I want if I paid the fee and why can't the county come into this century and let me renew online?

gee, I dunno. why don't you address the correct thread for your topic? maybe because you could hop into all your buddies vehicles and take their trash to the dump without them paying?
