FYI: The fate of Assateague may determined without any of us knowing. 1 of the options that the government is considering is completing shutting it down to all public forever. There is a "town meeting" being held at Ocean Pines Library tonight from 6-9 pm. The only way you would know about what is happening is if you may have happened to stop at the visitor center and have seen the small notice posted. Nothing has been in the paper about this whatsoever. It is detrimental that the masses attend this meeting.
Assateague Island National Seashore Draft General Management Plan Available for Public Review and Comment
Berlin, Maryland – The public is invited to learn more about Assateague Island National Seashore’s Draft General Management Plan / Environmental Impact Statement at one of three open houses on March 29th , 30th and 31st. The public open houses will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the alternatives proposed for the Island’s future. National Park Service staff will be on hand to answer questions. People can come at any time during the hours of the open house. The three open houses will be held at the following locations:
Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at the Wor-Wic Community College, 3200 Campus Drive, RM 302-Hazel Center, Salisbury, MD from 4:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Ocean Pines Library, 11107 Cathell Road, Berlin, MD, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM
Thursday, March 31, at the Chincoteague Center, 6155 Community Drive, Chincoteague Island, VA from 4:00 to 7:00 PM
Sounds like NPS is trying to do what they have all but succeeded in doing with the "Public" beaches on Hatteras Island in North Carolina. Their efforts have turned what was once a thriving, growing community into a dwindling area about to become a ghost town.

ReplyDeleteI am going through them right now as this is the first I have heard of this. If they shut down Assateague there goes my Summer as I spend a lot of time down there on the OSV with my camper. Assateague is one of the reasons I deal with this craphole called Salisbury.
They are threatening the closing so that you will be relieved with the other options. I'm sure the other options will be severely restrictive with the "protection of the environment" as the reason. Take a look at what happened at Cape Hatteras National Seahore. The government and environmentalists have had major portions of the island roped off because of the piping plover.

ReplyDeleteIf you scroll to the bottom and read the executive summary you will see they are proposing no such thing. They are proposing Alternative 3: Sustainable Recreation and Climate Change Adaptation (NPS Preferred Alternative), page 21, which would provide additional recreation opportunities on the beach long term.
Are they talking about the Virginia or Maryland end of the island? Or both?
ReplyDeleteBoth.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is they don't want us to drive our trucks on the beaches.
ReplyDeleteYou can thank Kathy Phillips and the Assateague Coastkeeper for this. She is the pig that started the lawsuit against the Hudson Farm and Perdue.
Kathy Phillips is the Pig that started the scare tactics to get rid of chicken houses in Accomack County.
Kathy Phillips is the pig that started the scare tacktics to get rid of Chicken Houses in Somerset County.
Kathy Phillips is the pig that started the scare tacktics to get rid of Chicken Houses in Wicomico County.
Now Kathy Phillips is the pig that has her eyes on starting scare tacktics to get rid of Chicken Houses in Dorchester County.
Someone needs to get rid of that PIG!!
This threat has been in our face for thirty years that I know of. The y won't shut it down, they need us to keep their own job.
ReplyDeleteWhen does government choose to become smaller?
*tactics
ReplyDeleteSounds like Kathy Phillips is right about all the chicken houses to me!
ReplyDeleteGlen Beck says "sustainable" is a dangerous liberal word. It's just a way for Govt. To sieze property.
ReplyDeleteThanks Obama...
ReplyDeleteDelegate Carl Anderton, Jr., a Republican who represents Wicomico County, says, "As the population has grown, the capacity on the Bay Bridge has grown exponentially and tourism is a huge part of our life on the Eastern Shore and Ocean City and everything in between so it's a great necessity."

When there are no chickens on the Shore the Shore will be no more. I guess we could raise the toll on 50 and 1/113 to $250 per car each way so the rich Gov workers can get to their OC property.
ReplyDeleteKathy sounds like soccer mom who needs a job, and a life
ReplyDeleteKathy Phillips has always had an over-inflated EGO, and over-inflated sense of self importance about herself.
ReplyDeleteShe originally came from the western shore, and always had a major distain for the locals
bc she she desparately wanted to be thought of as a local.
Since she has taken the position of 'Coast Keeper' and then decided to challenge Perdue and the Hudson's,
she has drawn a lot of negative attention to herself.
I have no problem with someone wanting to protect the natural resources that we all love about our home on the eastern shore,
but I do have a problem with someone who 'self appoints' themselves as some kind of 'important person' and then
proceeds to wreak havac on a family and their livelihood, just to be totally wrong in the end.
I don't think I've ever heard her mumble an apology for the woe she brought to those people.
She's basically an a$$hole.
