The David Duke, Donald Trump, KKK “Nontroversy”

THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT IS GETTING DESPERATE

Don’t look now, but we’ve weighed in twice now over the last week against positions taken by GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump – the guy whose populist candidacy we endorsed prior to this year’s “First in the South” presidential primary.

(See here and here for those columns).

This time, though, we’re coming down decidedly on the side of “The Donald.”

At issue? The Ku Klux Klan – and specifically Trump’s failure to repudiate an endorsement his campaign received from one of the organization’s former leaders, David Duke.

First of all, think about the verbal meandering required to follow this latest example of PC insanity: We’re supposed to be angry at someone for “failing to repudiate an endorsement?”

Really? Sounds a lot like leaving the cap off the toothpaste. Or not putting the toilet seat down.

  1. I watched Trump's interview where he got the David Duke question. His response was not very good. Actually, it was sloppy.

As a Trump supporter, he's got to stop these self-inflicted wounds.

He's got the republican nomination wrapped up, now it's all about the general election. The error in handling the Duke question, will be replayed a million times in the months leading up to the general election.

  2. Yeah, I don't feel that anybody really thinks that Trump is a racist. The problem is that for him to not denounce the David Duke or the KKK endorsement immediately gives the impression that he will sell his soul to win and election...and that is all that he cares about. My wife is a trump supporter and against my better judgement I was on the fence with him myself because he has said some things that I have agreed with and only because the rest of the field is pretty sickening. But seeing that revealed a dangerous flaw that will really hurt him come general election. To say that he didn't know who David Duke was or that he would need to research him and then respond was pretty lame. The dude ran for president years ago...how does a presidential candidate not know that?...Come on!

  3. Considering the crap we've been putting up with for the last seven years (and the final year to go), I almost expect the pendulum to swing as far in the other direction!

  4. He said he had to research Duke 9:43. He did immediately and has for the past several days disavowed Duke and his endorsement on Twitter, Facebook and on the news. His answer was not "sloppy." It is the way things should be done. Jumping immediately on the bandwagon because of an unpopular belief or because it's expected to win votes isn't productive and is never the way it should be.

  5. 11:11am...His answer was sloppy, especially when you consider that Trump was considering running for President in 2000 with the Reform Party, of which Duke was a member.

Here's what Trump said in February 2000: "So the Reform Party now includes a Klansman, Mr. Duke, a neo-Nazi, Mr. Buchanan, and a communist, Ms. Fulani. This is not company I wish to keep,” Trump said."

Further research wasn't required by Trump. He just needed to reiterate what he had previously said about Duke.

The David Duke question was a fastball down the middle, a question he had already answered. Now we've got to put up with ads and the MSM implying that Trump is a racist for the next eight months.

  6. Being "Devil's Advocate", why is the media and everybody else not talking and complaining about Hillary praising / getting endorsements from "Black Lives Matter", "The New Black Panthers", Farrakahn / Nation of Islam, "Rev" Al Sharpton and the Black Caucus? They are all groups that are just as "Racist" as David Duke and the "KKK". MSM is OK with one type of endorsement for one Candidate an another type of endorsement for the other Candidate they push. They are all "Racist" groups.

  8. I could care less about the KKK BS, I listen to what Trump is saying about ending all the politically correct BS. No one else has gotten close except Cruz but that was only after Trump blazed the trail. I will vote for Trump. The MSM will be calling him a Nazi and a child molester next but I don't trust anything the MSM says. They have proven themselves to be lying dogs... no scum bags, I don't want to insult dogs.

  9. No Trump's answer wasn't sloppy. Just because he said something 16 years ago doesn't mean he should repeat it now. For all he knew Duke could have renounced himself, repented and gone on to do good things. The media would never have reported on this anymore then they are Trump's renouncement today. Sticking to something you say 16 years ago without current research is not ever a good thing. A perfect example would be Little Melvin in Baltimore. A recently deceased heroin drug kingpin in the 70's and 80's who spent many years in prison. When he was released he went on to do good by mentoring youth and never got into any more trouble with the law for many years. If I had not researched Little Melvin I would have still thought he was a thug and a bad person.

  10. David Duke endorsed Trump Trump didn't endorse Duke. Nobody questioned Obama for his participation in a racist church or the endorsement he received from the black panthers nor did they hold Hillary accountable for endorsing Robert Byrd the klan member.
