NTSB Recommending Ban On Hands-Free Phones While Driving

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Safety on the road. The NTSB releases a list of most wanted safety improvements for 2016. Disconnecting with deadly distractions is one of them.

Derek Valcourt explains what the government wants to do.

They believe it would help save lives if they ban all people from using even hands-free cell phone devices in cars.

When a train collided with a truck in Rosedale in 2013, the resulting explosion damaged nearby businesses and homes.

Investigators pointed the blame at the truck’s driver, saying he was distracted talking on a hands-free phone.

  1. Typical! Justification for making laws that affect millions of people by referring to a single accident that was caused by a hands free device. What's next, banning you from eating in your car because you caused an accident while eating a Big Mac. Perhaps we should ban all high rise buildings just because one person fell multiple stories to their death. As with many things in this present day, we cannot allow the minority to dictate how the majority live.

  2. It is called legislating behavior and actions, which frankly, is not constitutional. It is getting to the point where this Nanny State is outrageous and far over reaching when it comes to allowing citizens to make decisions for themselves. Doesn't the legislative bodies in the various states - including Maryland - have more pressing issues? Like Jobs, Citizens being able to have disposable income. Little things like that?

  3. Pretty soon, they will try to tell people they can't drive with kids in the car. Usually kids are the biggest distraction while driving with their backseat fighting, barrage of questions and questions while messing with the music and singing. You're never going to completely eradicate distractions while driving. Basically, it's dead time and we live in a multi-tasking society where there is too much to do and little time to do it.

    1. No, they still get to use their phones (non-hands free), FM radio, CB radio, police radio, laptop open and running, a license plate scanner and a radar gun all running simultaneously. And if they hit you its your fault.
And I guarantee some cop will respond to this to tell me how safely they do it or how nessasary it is.
YOU ARE STILL A HUMAN AND YOU ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW.

  5. If you look at some of the proposed legislation currently in the Maryland General Assembly...No they don't have anything better to do besides create more state debt and ban senseless things like Cedar Hope Chests... Yes prohibit the manufacture, import and sale of Cedar Hope Chests is on the docket. The bill HB 2 is proposing exactly that. Also is you simply do a search of the word Debt under the House there are 6 bills and Senate there are 17 to date. All for various forms of creation of state debt. Look for yourself.

  8. Then, no listening to the radio. Next, no talking to passengers. Then, ban all the billboards (distracting from driving). There's no end to the crap that lawmakers will think up to ban. Me, I think we should ban the lawmakers who think up this crap.

  9. So many people crying NOW had no problem with the Patriot Act, the NDAA, Nazi checkpoints, warrantless searches, seizures of property and money, etc.
You know, because THEY weren't "doing anything wrong", or even better, "if it helps keep us safe.....". And there is always the old standby of the brainless sheep, "thugs always complain when the law gets 'em".
You gladly opened the door for these wanna-be Nazi storm troopers and they barged right in. They even knocked you down and hurt your kid, but you couldn't stop cheering. Goot ci-di-zen that you are....
Jefferson and Madison (and the thousand who died fighting in the American Revolution) would have gorged themselves just so they could puke all over you. THEN, shoot you in the head.
There is no going back now. The ONLY way "we, the people" can stop this inexorable march to total surveillance and control (in America??!) is to kill them. Barring that event, the noose around our necks will be pulled tighter and tighter, and they count on the "if you aren't doing anything wrong, don't worry" sector of our
population to smooth that transition over. And too many of you are oh-so-happy to oblige.
    Keep cheering.
