DENVER — Nearly 200 Muslim workers have been fired from their jobs at a Colorado meat-packing plant after walking out in a dispute over accommodating prayer in the workplace.
The company, Cargill Meat Solutions, fired about 190 workers after they staged a walkout earlier this month after they say they were told to pray at home instead of being allowed to pray in a specially designated room at the plant in Fort Morgan, Colorado.
Company officials and representatives for the workers, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said they continue to engage in negotiations.
The dispute appears to center on the time of day at which workers are able to pray, which changes according to the season in the Muslim faith.
In a statement to 9News in Denver, Cargill said that its policy on accommodating prayer in the workplace had not changed.
“In the Fort Morgan plant, a reflection area for use by all employees to pray was established in April 2009, and is available during work shifts based on our ability to adequately staff a given work area,” said the statement.

Good. The Muslims just keep pushing and pushing.
ReplyDeleteI love it , keep it going.
ReplyDeleteShould have simply announced they were going to start processing pork along with beef.
ReplyDeleteNow kick them out of this country.
ReplyDeleteGoodbye. Don't come back.
ReplyDeleteYou folks just don't get it. Muslims come to this country to practice their constitutional religious freedoms and right. Once they enter this country, become citizens and begin to practice their faith, some loud mouth businessman/employer quickly violates their constitutional rights to practice their faith because the employers think they can. The employers behavior give every muslims involved the right to sue the employers when they are denied the right to practice their faith. The tax payers pay the price for the snubbed and racist behavior of the employers for these lawsuits whem muslims win. The ideal is this, they can't beat us militarily. The WILL destroy us financially and economically. They shouldn't be allowed in this country. Ask the Australian.

ReplyDeleteThe term is 'reasonable accommodation'. If you want to pray on your coffee break or lunch period, go ahead. My guess is that since 2009 most of the users of the 'reflection room' are pointing toward Mecca.
Stopping the line or juggling break times to fit ever changing prayer times may not meet the reasonable test. And walking off the job is a voluntary resignation to most employers.
