Advocates for stricter gun laws rally in Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Md. — The recent news of mass shootings has motivated dozens of people to leave their warm homes Sunday for a chilly sunset rally in Rockville to promote an end to gun violence.

“When it comes to gun violence too many people want to just look the other way,” said U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat who represents portions of Montgomery, Frederick and Carroll counties.

Van Hollen, who is running for U.S. Senate, is in favor of a law that would require Americans to acquire a permit akin to a driver’s license before they could purchase a gun.

The Montgomery County chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence organized the event. One of the rally’s speakers was Cathy Mitchell, whose son was shot to death in D.C. by a 22-year-old man who had been arrested numerous times for illegal possession of a firearm.

“How can we not have gun registration? How can we not? There’s no reason,” Mitchell said during the rally.

  1. What a waste of time. All these people getting together to do what? Make us aware that there is gun crime? Not needed. To make us aware that killing is bad? Not needed. All these mouth breathers in one place. More feel good do nothing activities. These people need to stop gathering to be told what to think and instead start using that lump 3 feet about their butt for something other than a hat rack.

  4. Md. has gun registration, and you have to have an HQL card to buy a regulated firearm. All this has really put a stop to gun crimes in Baltimore hasn't it?

  5. 10:11 And...before the HQL, you had to obtain certification from the MSP website, which was free. The HQL simply monetized what was already there.

Fees and Taxes is all they care about.

  6. Mandating this permit.. how will this prevent a criminal, who disobeys the law anyway, from getting a gun?
    It will not. It cannot.

    So what's the point?

  8. People who lose their driving privileges still drive. People who don't have driver's licenses drive anyway. People who don't have gun licenses won't have guns? Explain this to me.

  15. Of course they will send SOMEONE ELSE to collect the guns.
    And who will they send?
Death wish storm troopers WITH GUNS.
Guns are bad unless they are used to take guns, is that it??
The idea will not go anywhere. No one wants to be one the team that's starts that dumb stuff.
    Aim for the head.
    Keep cheering!!

I apologise to my family ahead of time because that is exactly what I will do. I am sure I will wind up being the bad guy for standing up for my rights, and probably dead, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
