Maryland lawmakers call for better education, more support for new immigrants

Maryland educators and legislators say that more services and new approaches to teaching are needed for immigrant students struggling to get an education as they adjust to life in the United States.

"I think it is abundantly clear that as hard as folks in the city are trying, we have long way to go to make sure that we are giving immigrant students a great education," said Sen. Bill Ferguson, a Baltimore Democrat.

The General Assembly may need a task force to examine ways to help these newcomers, said Del. Brooke Lierman, a Democrat. She represents the Southeast Baltimore neighborhood that includes Patterson High, a school with hundreds of the newcomers.

"It may be that we need to convene some task force or working group to dive into these issues," she said. "We want to make sure they can graduate from high school and have the chance to go to college and can get good jobs. We want them to be able to live the American dream like our ancestors have."

  6. Times have changed. My ancestors emigrated here from Europe in the early 1900's but things were different then. We need to get our affairs in order. To make sure we can effectively deal with the current social issues. The last thing we need to do is create additional problems that require us to spend money we don't have and ask the citizens to pay for it with tax money they can't pay because of the jobs they don't have. This is why we are in the position we are. Borrowing money to pay for things we can't afford.

  7. if these illegals are not actively pursuing a u.s. citizenship, the only thing they are entitled to is a ticket back home coming here so their children can be born here is the greatest blight on the american economy educating them and paying for their medical bills since they don't have any insurance is crippling this country agree with ben carson and admit the handouts have to stop

  8. How about some legislators calling for limits on the number of immigrants allowed here! Our economy can barely support the socialist giveaways currently in place the the welfare and food-stamp freeloaders!

  9. Fire the task force. I can tell you what they need. 1. Learn English. You need to be able to speak and understand it as well as your native language, because it now is your native language. 2. Ignore the entitlement generation. YOU know better. Work hard and you will find rewards.

  11. NO, NO, NO MORE. Geez when are the legislators going to understand we cannot take any more taxes. If they are illegal they get nothing but a free ride (which is too much) back to their country of origin. And they can take their US born children (who cannot speak English)back with them.

  12. Things. Won't change until the Democrats are fired.

  13. Just think about it ,the teachers we have cannot teach our natural citizens properly , how in the hell do they expect to teach these illegals? Teaching them the basics on weed eaters and mowing just won't get it.

  14. Sad thing is, way too many ungrateful "natural citizens" cannot or will not learn properly. I have no tolerance for spending a dime on illegals who should have no right to a damn thing here. But some of the legal immigrants, who are thankful to be here and love America, will do far better than the kids who "look like them".

  15. What they are really saying is they just want more funding to waste.

  16. I've got a better idea. Send them packing to where they came from. We don't owe them anything.

  17. Now let me tell you what I want. Illegal immigrants are costing us more than we can afford. I see now that these illegal immigrants are living the pleasant life while our returning soldiers are not receiving health benefits, some are homeless, etc. Charity begins at home. Only a fool thinks we can save the world.
