Verizon to add $20 to grandfathered unlimited data plans

If you're still clinging to your Verizon unlimited cell phone plan, your monthly bill is about to jump by $20.

Verizon is planning to raise the price of unlimited data plans from $29.99 to $49.99 per month. The company confirmed the move to CNNMoney on Thursday morning.

It's yet another sign the company's trying to force people to let go of their highly-prized plans that remain only because they were grandfathered in.

The unlimited data is only part of a cell phone bill. Talking and texting are extra. Right now if you're on Verizon's 450 plan, that costs $59.99 per month. Add the new higher rate for unlimited data, the total monthly cost will look more like $109.99, plus fees.

  3. We changed to Verizon's new plan where we don't have a contract. We share 12gb for 3 lines. Since then, our data use has soared tremendously and we haven't used the phones more than usual. Happened to two friends of ours also. Verizon said they "can't explain it". Meanwhile we are getting data overage fees. If another carrier had better coverage in our area, we would drop Verizon in a heartbeat.

  4. Anonymous 11:17. The same thing happened to my wife and I we switched over to new data plan and now we are going over 10 gb a month when before we were not going over 5gb. Such a scam. It is a shame their service can't be beat on the shore!

  5. Yo bro, if your data usage is going up it's because you are using more data. Duhhhhhh Check your teenagers phone and use wifi when available. Set updates and app updates to only run on wifi as well. 12 gig is a hell of a lot of data, somebody is streaming video or gaming or something else foolish.

    1. Not true "bro". We started receiving notifications by text messages two months ago that we were using more data about ten days prior to the end of our billing cycle. The message told us to reply to the text with the word "yes" and it would automatically upgrade our data package by 2 gigs for $15.00 more a month. At first the message was that we had used 75% of our data with ten days remaining. Then it was 90% with ten days remaining.. There is no way to disprove their allegations of increased data usage and they know it.

  6. My phone bills have been between $54 and $85 a month for TWO phones ever since I dumped Verizon! Yes, a little less coverage area, but saving $150 a month for a couple of years is really nice!

  7. That's B/S 4:47. My wife and I have two phones on the same plan. For the past couple of months - since Verizon started phasing in this new pay as you go thing rather than the contract thing - we have been receiving overage warnings thru text messages. The texts seem to come about ten days prior to the end of the billing cycle and they we indicating an increase in usage each month over the month before. First it was a 75 percent usage warning and the next month it was a 90 percent usage warning. I looked at my bill and it shows an increase in usage but not in a way anyone can prove it one way or the other. I mean calls are listed but data usage is just bunched together. If you watch videos there is no indication how many or Mbps each video was. It's a scam. I suspect a class action lawsuit will be filed in the next year forcing Verizon to do it differently but until then they are scamming millions like me who elected to stay grandfathered into their plan and will be charged overage fees who haven't really increased their useable or changed their phone habits. I would imagine that their value on the stock exchange will go up as the profits gained from scamming people increases.

  8. I forgot to mention we only went with the 12gb plan because we shared 8gb and kept going over our data limit. We thought it was our new smartphones using more data and it was cheaper to up the data. Now we know its not us! Last month we went OVER by 4 GB!! They are thieves!!

  9. I don't understand how you go over your allowed data. We have 4 phones, and we set limits. At 2 Gb's, the phone stops using data for the kids. We also have 10gb's and never have gone over.

  12. 7:19, we don't understand it either. And Verizon said they cannot explain it! That's what is so frustrating!! I'm glad to hear it does not happen to everyone. But it's happening to us and many people we know. :-(

  13. Who needs unlimited data? I'm a geeky person and only use 200MB a month! I mean home and work have wifi, as do many restaurants and public places.

    Of course, I use PagePlus (Verizon's network and phone number) for $29.95 a month with no bogus fees, nothing additional. And it's full 4G data speed.

    Only an idiot would still be on Verizon paying $80-120 a month anyway!

  14. Wow 9:02. I don't consider ourselves idiots. We don't have wifi at our home or at work, and when we are at a restaurant, we put our phones away and talk to each other. Glad you are saving so much money, kudos to you.

  15. I have consumer cellular through aarp. My wife and I share 400 minutes per month both voice and data and only pay around 35 per month. I've never had a dropped call and I've traveled all over the country. Works great! I say let the market dictate and drop them! If enough people do this, Verizon will take notice and hopefully change their ways. Same for Comcast. I got rid of their cable because it became very unreasonable and didn't see any value in what I was getting for the price paid.

  17. Just switched to Cricket. Great coverage so far and paying half what we were paying Verizon, and we now have twice the data! Verizon is such a scam

  18. straight talk is sold by walmart but so is oscar mayer hotdogs, valvoline oil, minutemaid OJ....what's yer point? None I guess. Keep sending verizon $100+ a month.
