Considering that the American public wants things cheap - they're not willing to pay $4.99 for this pin to support the accompanying $15/hr wage. By outsourcing the manufacturing to China, the distributor in the states can still make money on the product and provide the product to the consumer for $.99...
Until we start demanding American made products and are willing to pay the associated higher costs to keep the manufacturing here in the States, we'll continue to see things just like this.
A good example is the Army beret purchase a year or so ago...the government contract process boiled down to the lowest cost...and they ended up with US Army uniforms items with a "Made in China" label....In order to drive down costs and still make a buck, our Space Program vendor purchased surplus Russian rocket motors...the minimal cost refurbishment led to the explosion shortly after launch...yes the Space Program of the sixties was expensive - but it worked and employed a bunch of people right here in the states!
