CDC: High school classes should start later in the day

WASHINGTON — There’s a renewed push to start school later for local teenagers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged school districts throughout the country to start classes at 8:30 a.m. or later. Nationally, 83 percent of middle school and high school classes begin much earlier. The average start time is 8:03 a.m., based on data from the 2011-12 school year.

The CDC recommendation follows similar guidance last year from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and marks one of the few times the CDC has issued a wake-up call to educators on a lifestyle issue that can have a huge impact on adolescent health.

  1. I remember having to be at school at 8 a.m. after a wakeup time of 6:30 a.m. As a teenager, with school sports and other extracurriculars, a part time job and a full load of all of what are now AP classes, I needed a lot more sleep. I never felt fully awake in morning classes, even though more often than not I walked to school and should have had my juices fully flowing after that 2 mile hikw. In those days they didn't offer students a snack or breakfast. The time that I really felt pretty chipper was about 2 p.m., an hour and a half before school let out.

  4. When some kids have be at the bus stop at 6:45 or earlier, and get to school right at 8am, with no time for breakfast at school, that is going to be a tiring start to the day.

    1. Breakfast in school. My mom or dad cooked our breakfast before we went to school. Get your butt up in the morning and cook breakfast for your own kids. Darn, soon you folks are going to want the school system to be your babysitter's 24 hours a day Monday - Friday.

  5. I remember walking to school in the winter with no shoes and 10 ft of snow. Uphill both ways too!

  6. 259, why can't they eat breakfast at home, I did, and mine do now.

I waited for my bus at 0615, with school starting at 0710. We were done by 215 and worked/sports etc.

We need to stop creating an "ideal" situation for these kids. The real world will chew them up and spit them out at this point.

  7. Y'all need any cheese with that whine? If I have to be at work at 6:30, my kids need to be up and out as well. I can't wait around an extra hour or I'll lose my job. Bedtime is at 8 instead of 9, sleepyhead!

Breakfast is free at school. Why waste some of the food stamp budge when you can get more free meals at school.

My School started at 8am. We were about 20 minutes away driving...if we took the bus it was a 45 minute ride. The only reason why school in that area started that late was because of the farm families. Most has to get up do the milking and then go to school.

Stop coddling these kids. Make them be accountable for the rules for once. We keep changing things to suit them and when they hit the real world they are not prepared.

  11. Let the kids go to school like a real job, 9 to 5 and a half hour lunch break.

  12. Well, if they start later, then they need to stay at school later. I agree with 7:03 PM, either 8-4 or 9-5, sounds right to me. No free breakfast, no free lunch. Eat breakfast at home and take your lunch.

  13. Speaking of breakfast...give them a real one. Don't hand them a pop-tart full of sugar that will give them a sugar high and then it drops by the time they are in their first class. That's why they aren't fully awake and can't concentrate.

  14. The later they start the later they get out at the end of the day. What happens to those that play sports after school? If they don't get out of school til 4 or later they will have little time to practice during certain months when it gets dark at 5pm.

  15. Let's look at this with a new set of eyes.
Ok it's still sounds like we are creating a weak generation with no idea of how to physically work only complain and bully their way to what ever goal they choose
Proof once again "the generation that would change the world is still looking for their car keys"

Wake up, go to school, do your homework That is your position as a student
