Murder Rates Drop As Concealed Carry Permits Soar

The number of concealed carry handgun permits has skyrocketed since President Obama was first elected, while murder rates have fallen, according to a new report released Wednesday.

Since 2007, the number of concealed handgun permits has soared from 4.6 million to over 12.8 million, and murder rates have fallen from 5.6 killings per 100,000 people to just 4.2, about a 25 percent drop, according to the report from the Crime Prevention Research Center.

And the number of permits issued is increasing faster every year. Over 1.7 million new permits were issued last year — a 15.4 percent increase over 2013, the largest such single-year jump ever, according to the report from the center led by President John R. Lott and research director John E. Whitley.

“It puts the lie to the myth promulgated by anti-gun individuals that somehow more law-abiding citizens carrying guns will lead to more crime. In fact, quite the opposite is the case,” said Larry Keene, senior vice president and general counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation. “More law-abiding citizens own firearms for self-protection, and crime continues to decline.”

  1. Of course, it happens frequently. Increase the number of trained, law-abiding citizens carrying protection, advertise it widely, and the crime rate goes down. Criminals take the easy route.

  2. And gun crimes are way up in Maryland because low intellect voters still vote for Democrats.

  3. You are correct 9:59. I really can't understand why so many people can actually vote for a democrat when they have seen with their own eyes what the people like Obama, O'Malley, Cardin, etc have done to this country and state. Democrats simply ignore the facts and play the blame someone else game.

  4. Here on the Eastern Shore, there are approximately 35 miles between the state lines of Delaware and Virginia. In Maryland you are an easy open target. You are not a open target in the surrounding states because they allow carry permits.

  5. 10:35 Good point. And, if you have a legal carry permit in either of those states and travel through Maryland you are a criminal.

  7. I live in Maryland , I carry everyday and night when out. My concealed carry permit is the 2nd amendment. I'm 72 years old and have been carrying for years. There have been opinions about this from my nephew who is FBI and my friend who is FBI , one says it's legal , the other says maybe. Anyway , I know my rights , I will continue to carry and will engage when threatened . 2nd infantry Division Recon 38th battalion . expert rifle , pistol and C4.
