Mayor: ‘An Awful Lot Of Discussion’ Before OC Zoning Change Approved

OCEAN CITY – As promised, members of the Coastal Association of REALTORS® (CAR) made their opposition to a proposed new zoning district known this week, sparking Mayor Rick Meehan to respond to those concerns.

CAR members, rental management companies and property owners gathered at Monday evening’s Mayor and City Council regular session to demonstrate their opposition to the recommended establishment of an R-1A Single Family Residential District in Ocean City that would prohibit rentals less than 12 months.

At the end of last summer, Ocean City experienced a growing number of rental concerns and complaints, with the majority of those complaints deriving from Mallard Island. At that time, the Planning and Zoning Commission held public hearings to consider a potential amendment to the City Code regarding the R-1 Single Family Residential District and MH Mobile Home Residential District in regulating short-term and long-term rentals.

    It always gets me that government will always institute even more restrictions instead of just enforcing existing rules and regulations that would take care of the problem. Why do we even bother to have the original rules and all those police if they aren't working.

    Mallard Island is a small neighborhood on the bayside at 15th street. Most of the homeowners on Mallard Island are O.C. business owners. Hotel owners, restaurant owners etc. So basically they don't want the tourists in their neighborhood but it's ok for them to spend money at their places of business. Go figure.

    Here are just some of the residents and property owners of Mallard Island on 15th street and bay.

    Hale Harrison- Harrison group hotels & restaurants. Probably largest employer in Ocean City.
    Rose Brous- Hotels & restaurants
    Avraham Sibony - Sunsations, 45th st.village, developer, restaurants.
    Robert Layton - restaurant
    James Mathias - Senator
    Phillips Crab House Family - Restaurants/hotel
    Granville Trimper - Amusements
    George Purnell - Hotels/restaurants/developer
    Phillip Houck - Restaurants "Bull On The Beach"
    Stewart Dobson - Newspaper "OC Today"
