Companies would not have to disclose whether their food products contain genetically modified ingredients under legislation passed by the House Thursday.
The House bill passed 275-150. It's backed by the food industry, which has fought mandatory labeling efforts in several states around the country.
So far, Vermont is the only state set to require package labels for genetically modified foods. That law will take effect in July 2016 if it survives a legal challenge.
The country's largest food companies say genetically modified foods are safe and that labels would be misleading.

How about some transparency - consumers should be allowed to know what their food is made of.
ReplyDeleteIt's not just about the cost of labelling - that's an easy change...what have you got to hide?!
Money talks.
ReplyDeleteAnd your "leaders" have listened. And, even worse, it was a REPUBLICAN House that listened so well.
We are being sold out EVERY DAY by the people who are supposed to look out for our safety and interests.
In a short period of time, we have been told that we don't really need to know WHERE our food comes from and who produced it. Now, we are told that we don't really need to know HOW it is produced either.
You can also see how someone enters Congress with a million or two, but in a few years, making $125,000 a year, are worth 25 million.
Well, on the bright side, they are, at least, still allowing us to HAVE food.
Call your Congressman. Let me know when he calls you back (and you are not allowed to offer a $50,000 bribe to get his attention, either). I meant "campaign contribution".......
"Your guy" is neck-deep in this, too.
Keep cheering.
This is right in par with the trade agreement Obama bin Laden pushed for....
ReplyDeleteI told you it was comming...
Certain members of the ruling class don't want us to know where our food comes from, or what's in it. And the dems and repubs are trying to sell us the idea that by not labeling our food, or not knowing where it will come from will somehow lead to more jobs for American ag. Buy land now!
ReplyDeletethis is a travesty. they are supposed to protect us; not line their pockets.
ReplyDeleteThat is what you get with less regulation. Less protection.
ReplyDeletePay back for all those corporate brothers by the Republican party.
