Sussex girl, 6, recovering from West Nile

A 6-year-old Sussex County girl was briefly hospitalized with West Nile virus and is now recovering at home, public health officials say.

"This new human case is a reminder that West Nile virus is still active in Delaware," said Dr. Karyl Rattay, Division of Public Health director. "It's tempting with the distractions of summer fun to forget to protect you and your loved ones from insect bites. These bites can cause much more serious health problems than just itching and discomfort.”

Emily Knearl, spokesman for the Division of Public Health, would not say where in Sussex County the girl lives. She was discharged from the hospital June 17, she said.

"It could have happened pretty much anywhere in the state because we don't know where she was bitten," Knearl said.
