Protesters Block Highway Ramp In Baltimore During Morning Traffic

Protesters blocked morning traffic northbound and southbound I-95 to 395 ramp in opposition to a new youth detention center.

Maryland Transportation Authority spokesman Tamory Winfield says Interstate 395 from I-95 into the city was closed just before 9 a.m. Tuesday for about 45 minutes, leading to delays on I-95.

Tweets from Rev. Jamal Bryant show the protest is related to a new juvenile jail to be built in the city. The state approved the plans to build the $30 million, 60-bed jail on May 13th, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Protesters believe the money should be spent on education instead of the facility.

  1. Spending more money on education will not keep them in school. It's going to have to be a attitude and social change and not living off welfare.

  2. So let's call it a school then. They look about the same in Baltimore anyway. And correction could be called re-schooling. That way everybody is happy!

  3. Baltimore's school district spends 27% more per pupil than the average MD district. 63% higher than the national average. Throwing money at the problem hasn't worked.

  4. $500,000 per bed....seems reasonable.

  5. It must be nice to not have to work on a weekday... you know, like the rest of us that pay taxes.

  7. Liberal Jim and Company give $18,000 per pupil of your money to Baltimore City schools...plus a $1.2 Billion slush fund to "build 14 new schools".

At the same time he votes to give only $3500 per pupil to Worcester and $5500 to Somerset and Wicomico school districts.

The districts this man purports to "represent" and "work for" get the shift while he gives grand tours lecturing students on his virtues. The formula is broken and skewed but he does nothing for the past decade.

Conservative Republicans need to rise up and challenge this nonsense.

  8. With "leaders" like this fake "reverend" Bryant, blacks need no enemies. The problem is they are too damn stupid to see it.
Instead of protesting about this jail how about doing something about the 50+ percent chronic absenteeism rate in Baltimore City.
It's really really getting to be believable that blacks are intellectually inferior.

  9. Give them a few more weeks like last week with the shootings and murder and they will need that space to bury their own.....

  10. Lucky I was not going to work, I cut it so close, I would of had to run them over. I don't have extra time for this kind of BS.

  11. This is perfectly understandable. Building the prison would create jobs. That's the last thing the people who live around there want.

  12. Nothing worthwhile in Baltimore; no need to visit because it has nothing to offer of any value.

  13. 60 beds they need 6000 really talk about waste that will not hold one neighborhood worth of juvenile thugs. Give them the city it seems to be working out so far.

  16. This "reverend" is pissing in the wind.

The juvenile jail is being built because currently thugs under 18 are being held at the same facility as thugs over 18, which is a violation of federal law. Would he prefer that poor little Dindu Nuffin remains in proximity to adult criminals, where he's likely to learn even more about his criminal career, be recruited into a gang, and learn what saggy butt pants mean to a hungry horny inmate?
