A Viewer Writes: Don Rush

Apparently Don Rush isn't his real name at all? Rush is a fake name he uses on the radio. Looks like his real last name is Wroeck. What kind of a newsman gives a fake name on the air? That's the kind of nonsense that radio deejays do, not journalists. Look at the email address he gives here. Maybe someone should ask him about that.

  1. He is an admirer of Rush Limbaugh so in honor of Limbaugh he adopted Rush as a last name.

  2. There's nothing magic about being a 'newsman' that would require using your real name on the air. Many of us use different names, often to assure privacy when we want it.
There are some STRANGE people out there in Radioland..

  5. what about Jimmy Hoppa? what a joke, i get it for the radio, but when you switch to TV news you are supposed to be credible and trustworthy. How can anyone take a guy named Jimmy Hoppa seriously?

  6. Many 'On the Air' commercial radio DJs, announcers, etc. have used 'stage names' across the years.

Sometimes it was because their actual name was hard to pronounce or spell, and sometimes to avoid prejudice. In and of itself, not a big deal. But if the assumed name is to dodge a past scandal could be grounds for discussion.

Seems a quizzical practice in the land of NPR, though.

So I'd concentrate on the content, quality and fairness of his work.

Kind of doubt that Wolfman Jack was on the Wolfman's birth certificate!

  8. If you pronounce his real name correctly, it sounds very much like "Rush". "Rush" is easier to spell for people than is "Roeck".

  12. What always got me was that older woman mentioned a lot on this blog "Stevie" something or Other. Not from Salisbury or even the county so don't recall her last name. I always thought she must have been a Stevie Nicks wannabe in her younger years because no one especially a woman that old would go by the name of Stevie. It's kind of dopey.
