Salisbury/Wicomico County Will Lose Another 650 Jobs

As we just posted HERE this morning, Labinal Power Systems just informed me there are 650 Employees in the Salisbury facility.

This is a massive blow to our economy. Quite frankly, I would have liked to have been informed by SWED, the former County Executive and just as important Mayor Jim Ireton FIRST on this matter.

A true professional would have provided a Press Release expressing ALL of the hard work they had done to try and salvage Labinal Power Systems leaving Salisbury.

Mind you Folks, THAT is what a professional business person would do. Labinal contacted me directly with this Press Release, so for those of you questioning if my original post was true, it absolute is.

So why hasn't this been on WBOC, WMDT or the Daily Times? Can you say, Liberal cover up. At least companies like Labinal know where to go to get factual information out to the masses.

As for the Employees, WOW, this breaks my heart. Just know that if I had been elected Mayor I would have exhausted everything I could to keep your jobs here in Salisbury. How unfortunate.

  1. Joe- that is tragic for our economy, BUT, I'm not sure if that's in the city...there is a chunk of county surrounded by the city over that way...you may want to check into it...

  2. This is heartbreaking.
All the seals continue to clap when one chain restaurant opens or another bar-We're "moving forward" the low information chant. These people have absolutely ZERO priorities.

  3. Bummer - as if home values here haven't sunk low enough I don't think this is going to help. Hope the people can find good jobs (better move to Texas, a conservative state).

  9. I've been at labinal for 9 years. They want more jobs in TEXAS!? what about MARYLAND!? They lied to us. They said we had contracts until 2019.. Honestly, deep down I knew it was coming... But so soon!? Barbara Makowski gave us money for what!? Packing boxes to move to Texas!? I'm sure not. That was to KEEP JOBSNIN MARYLAND. This is what I do best... Thus is what I know! Can you imagine what the unemployment rate and how many people are going to lose EVERYTHING?!!?! JUST because it will "BRING MORE JOBS TO TEXAS"! Realistically speaking, we all know everything will be going to Mexico, where at that labinal they make their employees work like slaves for PENNIES. They can't even speak there and I believe that's how they want it here. But! I have a voice, this is America, and they will hear my voice tomorrow! Not many people can say that they live their jobs, but I sure ad hell did.

  10. It all has to do with Maryland's corporate tax structure. They may be looking at a local "rain tax".

  11. How very sad. I know it won't be quick but I believe Hogan will come through and bring some much needed business into our state.

    For now I just weep.

  12. For years democrats in Maryland invested way too much in grants for social issues as in parks and safe streets and 0 in retaining businesses or business development so the exodus continues.

  19. I know people in Texas whose house values are skyrocketing while ours are plummeting. This is just yet another reason why ours will continue to fall when 600 or so families cant find alternative work here. Someone needs to work out why we make it so difficult for businesses to operate in MD, especially Salisbury. Very sad.

  20. I've had a rough 3 years but have maintained employment for the most part, if I worked there and they offered me a job in Texas I'd be packing right now. I'd forfeit my home and abandon this area in a heart beat!

Ireton likes to spew the words the culture of "no," he's right, the culture of no jobs.

  23. It is really hard to believe that NO ONE in Salisbury knew about this. I'm talking about the old regime. They created the terrible business environment. I agree with the previous poster about all the social programs. Who needs all these parks when jobs are leaving? Priorities have been completely screwed up. Department heads feathering their own nests at expense of taxpayers. What we needed the last 8 years was job growth, not building ball fields for a week of tournaments. And by the way, all those claims about hotels and restaurants making so much off these events - most of these teams stay in OC and eat there too. More hype to cover up the real problem - NO JOBS and NO PLAN to get them.

  26. Google and find it is on Glen ave -

Harvard Custom Mfg with its 800 employees merged in Nov 2010 with Labinal a division of Safran - Labinal is a global company with Over 13,800 employees at 45 offices and facilities worldwide.

according to press release sent out by Labinal the closing the Salisbury plant will start in May 2015 and run until late 2016 - other words not shutting its doors tomorrow

A press release was sent out by Labinal this morning so I have to wonder if county or city officials were even given a heads up before MSM.

google and find. boocoos of data on the company and the press release sent out today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tax revolt - we all should refuse to pay them until the leadership changes to pro business.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The real truth is that the major had nothing to do with this. The company Labinal that bought Harvard Custom Manufacturing bought them for their military contracts. It was their plan since day one to eventually transition these contracts to their Texas location. Their plan was a 3-5 year complete transition. They are right on schedule. They drove their rates through the roof so no other contracts could be won in this area and they wouldn't be blamed for the move.

The hopes are now that the upper management there have the same loyalty to the community as the prior owners did and try to structure a buy out similar to when Grumman moved from this location in the 90's. Sure it will be a large reduction in jobs but they would eventually return under similar ownership as Harvard custom manufacturing.

Labinal is a disease and the shore should be grateful they are leaving. I just hope the people make a stand and save what they can.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Actually, the center line of Glen Ave is the property line between city and county. The Civic Center AND Labinal are in the County.. That is what caused such a problem between the city and county when the Civic Center determined the street should be closed for the Dog Shows for safety reasons.. (Note that the CC new parking area is in the City, across the street..)

He has thirty plus years invested between the 3 companies. It is a damn shame that a foreign country can come in and buy up American businesses and then close them up or move them to another country leaving hard working Americans standing in the unemployement line!

So that's why Salisbury population has grown 25% in the last 10 years? Go look for the U.S. Census numbers for Salisbury in 2000 and 2010. That's not a city that's "dying".

  46. 5:13 -- and the per capita and average income has gone the other way because wage-earning workers leave and more welfare types move here to fill up the subsidized housing like that new place on Fitzwater street. Plus the closings like this one put folks on the unemployment line.

That's a lie, and didn't he have John Robbisons (echelons newest partner) say they would pay to advertise. Lol isn't he the one who stole a taxi cab ( or doesn't remember taking it home) on NYE. 57. Typical for when democrats are in leadership. I got an idea, let's tax them if they leave, let tax them for every employee unemployed and let's tax them for leaving a vacant building.

  58. Useful idiot JT is defending the local democrat politicians tooth and nail saying this closure isn't their fault. He's too dumb to figure out, they support the policies that cause businesses to close as well as help get the democrats locals elected to state office.
JT's even gone so far as to say he will "pay" for people to move. Very tacky after they were asking for money to help pay for his father's funeral expenses recently.

    ReplyDelete
  59. 10:21, WHAT? He was asking for donations for his own father's funeral, are you serious? How low can you go! May his father rest in peace, but REALLY! Maybe we'll see his in his scooter on Rt. 13 with his buddy Nick Parks. Not much different, is it. WOW, I'm in shock here. I'll send him a Fruit Cake.

  60. Joe, JT likes to act like he is above saying and posting nasty comments. That is hilarious. He is all about hateful comments and lies. Do you know he has a spot on his blog asking for donations to support his blog? Quite frankly, I am tired of supporting this lazy, nasty abuser of the system with my tax dollars. He is in subsidized housing and asking for donations to his blog? Noticed he recently posted about upgrading his laptop. Who is paying for it - the taxpayers he is living off of? Isn't asking for donations while receiving welfare a violation of some kind? He needs to be reported to all the places where he gets handouts. BTW, I am not a regular reader of his BS. Was told about a particular post and saw all of this then.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sure was Joe. Obit said in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to help with funeral expenses.
I would think his priorities would be to pay for his own father's funeral before he offers to pay for people to leave the area. These are people who are good people who are suffering the state's democrat stronghold who only want to be hard working self sufficient productive citizens who are frustrated and want to air their frustrations and low life JT is telling them to move and he's pay for them to move all the while with his hand out. He is a very sick person.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 10:59, He is being investigated. I was not aware he is taking donations. His time will come.

  65. As per JT (and this takes the cake and if not so sad about 100's losing jobs it would be funny)-
"I have to give Mayor Ireton credit for being proactive in trying to keep Labinal in Salisbury after their unexpected announcement of closing. Jim has made calls and sent them a letter along with Senator Mikulski asking them what they need to stay in town"

"Proactive" he says. He must have heard the word "proactive" and thought it sounded clever and would make him sound intelligent if he used it. Too stupid to know doing something proactive is not doing it after the fact.

    ReplyDelete
  66. To hell with nick parks and JT. You people have a very serious problem in Wicomico and Salisbury, The city/county reps, directors/assistance, board of eds, administrators and the good ole boys system have been draining this area for YEARS. They've worked people like slaves for minimal wages and then leave after they have profited from your slave labor. It's all about money and more money. Corporation is becoming rich of the backs of us. Stop working and join the ranks of the people who receive assistant from the government, get food stamps, go to school on a pell grant, file disabilities, etc; go on vacation enjoy life and be happy. Stop giving your hard money to corporation. Enjoy life. I said to hell with working as a slave. I just stop paying everything, walked away from everything, left the eastern shore and went on "vacation". I simply sad F' it. Now, my life is simple. I work when I want to work. The bills are getting paid at my current resident in another state. My family and I are loving and living life on our terms. And, my children and I are very happy. Big business will not control me.

    ReplyDelete
  67. They have been moving employees to Texas for years. I have a buddy that moved there three years ago. They knew what was going on. The idiot Mayor is too busy in everything he should not be to take care of the city. The guy is an egotistical a-hole. I liked him before I actually met him. What a waste he is for the people. He is all about f-ing with the police and gay rights to be of any help.

    ReplyDelete
  68. If the mayor was proactive he would have since day one of being elected mayor, been on Labinal's doorstep periodically asking them how they were doing and what he and the city could do so they continued to be a profitable plant for the company.
Being proactive means asking an employer what the local officials can do for them, before they decide to close.
JT's is wrong. He was not proactive at all but only got involved after he heard of the closure.
