The 10 Friendliest Cities In The US
For the second year in a row, Charleston, South Carolina, has taken the top spot on Conde Nast Travelers' list of the friendliest cities in the U.S.
Each year, the magazine ranks hotels, cruises, beaches, and cities as part of its Readers' Choice Survey. The results aren't scientific (it's an online survey that anyone can take), but thousands of people participate in the survey each year.
In the survey, "friendliness" is generally measured by how welcome people feel in different cities.
Almost every city that made the "friendliest" list was in the South.
The survey also asked people to rate the unfriendliest cities in the U.S. (unsurprisingly, most were in the Northeast). Both lists are below.

10. Asheville, North Carolina (score: 79)

AN ILLEGAL POEM
By Illegal Immigrants
I cross river,
P oor and broke,
Take bus,
See employment folk.
Nice man
Treat me good in there,
Say I need
Go see Welfare.
Welfare say,
'You come no more,
We send cash
Right to your door.'
Welfare checks,
They make you wealthy,
Medicaid
It keep you healthy!
By and by,
Got plenty money,
Thanks to you,
TAXPAYER dummy.
Write to friends
In motherland,
Tell them
'Come, fast as you can'
They come in buses
And Chevy trucks,
I buy big house
With welfare bucks.
They come here,
We live together,
More welfare checks,
It gets better!
Fourteen families,
They moving in,
But neighbor's patience
Wearing thin.
Finally, white guy
Moves away,
I buy his house,
And then I say,
'Find more aliens
For house to rent.'
In my yard
I put a tent.
Send for family
They just trash,
But they, too,
Draw welfare cash!
Everything is
Very good,
Soon we own
Whole neighborhood..
We have hobby
It called breeding,
Welfare pay
For baby feeding.
Kids need dentist?
Wife need pills?
We get free!
We got no bills!
TAXPAYER crazy!
He pay all year,
To keep welfare
Running here.
We think America
Darn good place!
Too darn good
For white man race.
If they no like us,
They can go,
Got lots of room
In Mexico.
How Obama armed the Islamic caliphate
'About 800 weapons wound up in jihadi arms bazaar'
Jihadists in Benghazi are declaring themselves part of an Islamic caliphate just days after tribal warfare forced American diplomatic personnel out of Libya over fears for their safety.
As WND reported Monday, in a repudiation of the premise advanced by President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the “Arab Spring” was a democracy movement, Libya has descended into lawless chaos in which various terrorist militia, including al-Qaida, vie for power.
With most of the world focused on foreign crises like the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Russian influence in Ukraine, the State Department quietly announced the withdrawal of U.S. Embassy staff on July 26.
Barely a week later, the fate of the war-torn country appears even more bleak.

12 States Sue Obama Administration for Regulatory ‘Overreach’
Coal country is striking back at the federal government in the latest “war on coal” battle.
Twelve states are suing the Environmental Protection Agency to deter impending restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants.
The states filed the lawsuit in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday, accusing the EPA of “overstepping its legal boundaries” under the Clean Air Act.

How Economies Collapse: Systemic Friction And Debt Are Self-Liquidating
Paying for unproductive friction with borrowed money has generated the illusion that free to me is actually free - it isn't.
We all understand how friction slows our progress: flatten the tires on a bicycle and it becomes much harder to maintain speed. If a brake pad is rubbing against one wheel, it gets even harder.
If we pile on additional sources of friction, eventually forward motion stops. In systemic terms, the system freezes up and collapses.
Here are some examples of systemic friction in the U.S. economy:
1. College degrees that cost four times as much but yield diminishing value in the job market.

Cure For Hepatitis C Comes With A Heavy Price Tag ($84,000)
WASHINGTON -- It is a potentially deadly disease that now kills more Americans than AIDS.
The good news is there's now a cure for Hepatitis C. The bad news is it literally comes at a very high price.
The medication -- known as Sovaldi, made by Gilead Sciences -- costs $1,000 a pill, and roughly $84,000 for a course of treatment.
"I have concerns about the cost of the regimen," says Dr. Richard Elion, director of clinical research at Whitman-Walker Health in D.C.

Vulnerable Dems balk at Obama amnesty plans
Argue only Congress has power to change deportation laws
(THE HILL) Democratic senators facing tough reelections want to put the brakes on President Obama’s plan to reform the nation’s immigration enforcement system through executive action.
Two of the Senate’s most vulnerable incumbents, Sens. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), say Obama should not act unilaterally to reduce deportations, arguing it’s Congress’s job to change the law.
While the Democratic-led Senate has passed a bipartisan bill, the Republican-controlled House will not. That poses a dilemma for Obama.

Hoyer: Obama 'Can’t Legalize' Illegals--But He Can Decide How to 'Implement the Laws'
(CNSNews.com) -- House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said that President Obama “can’t legalize” the illegal aliens in the United States, but then added that the president “can implement the laws as he believes they should be implemented."
"Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution states that Congress has the power to make laws governing naturalization. Given this, does President Obama have the unilateral power to legalize illegal aliens?" CNSNews.com asked Hoyer.
“I don’t think he does,” Hoyer responded, “and I don’t think that’s what he’s going to do. You’re right. He can’t legalize them.”
“What the president can in fact do, however, is implement the laws as he believes they should be implemented,” Hoyer added. “And there have been a lot of scholars – and I’m not going to go through the quotes now – who have said the President clearly has broad authority to decide how he’s going to implement the law.”
“But that does not mean he can legalize people. He can’t make them citizens,” he maintained. “Not according to the law.”
Hoyer also said he’s “not going to speculate” on the possible outcome of President Obama's usurpation of congressional authority in his executive actions on immigration.

Marion Barry's Response to Reporter Confronting Him Over Unpaid Tickets May Just Show Everything Wrong With Washington
“In this town, we decide what’s important and not important at the station and in the community. And with all the stuff going on with the City Council up here, this going on over here [motioning], going on over here, you know. You’re talking about parking tickets? Thats’ ridiculous!”
So went the response of controversial former D.C. mayor and current city councilman Marion Barry. And it may just sum up everything that’s wrong with Washington and the attitude of lawmakers in the nation’s capitol.
The remarks were directed toward local WTTG-TV investigative reporter Emily Miller, who wastrying to find out why the politician (and “Mayor for life“) hadn’t paid over $600 in outstanding parking tickets for a car with “Ward Eight” plates. The tickets were from 2013-2014. And as the news outlet would come to find out, he actually owed much more — about four times more.

Politico's Mike Allen: 2014 Environment 'Bleak' for Democrats, 'A Bad Place to Be'
Sunday on CNN's CNN "Inside Politics," Politico's Mike Allen said Democrats are facing a "bleak" reality in the upcoming midterm elections.
Allen said, "Here is an amazing sign of how bleak the environment is for Democrats. A Democratic strategist who had access to all the polls, focus groups said 'we're writing off voters who are angry, our target voters now are people who are worried, disappointed, concerned.' Those are the voters that they want. That's a bad place to be."

Remains of Jonestown Bodies Found at Funeral Home In Delaware
The cremated remains of nine victims of a 1978 mass cult suicide-murder in Jonestown, Guyana, have turned up in a former funeral home in Delaware, officials said Thursday.
The state Division of Forensic Science has taken possession of the remains, discovered at the former Minus Funeral Home in Dover, and is working to make identifications and notify relatives, the agency and Dover police said in a statement.
On Nov. 18, 1978, gunmen from the Peoples Temple cult ambushed and killed U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan of California, three newsmen and a defector from the group at a remote jungle airstrip as they visited on a fact-finding mission to investigate reports of abuses of members.
Cult leader Jim Jones then orchestrated a ritual of mass murder and suicide at the temple's nearby agricultural commune, ordering followers to drink cyanide-laced grape punch. Most of them complied, although survivors described some people being shot, injected with poison, or forced to drink the deadly beverage when they tried to resist.

Buchanan: Obama Planning to 'Transform' America with Amnesty for 'Undocumented Democrats'
Monday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show," conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan said President Barack Obama is planning to use his executive action granting amnesty to potentially 5 million illegal immigrants at the end of this summer in an attempt to "transform" America by flooding it with "natural-born Democratic voters."
Buchanan, author of “The Greatest Comeback: How Richard Nixon Rose from Defeat to Create the New Majority,” said, "There is no doubt about it, folks from third-world countries -- Asia, Africa Latin America, they tend to vote somewhere between 70 to 90 percent Democratic when they come into the country. One reason being many are poor, many don't have high levels of education, they are highly dependent on the social welfare benefits of the state and local governments so therefore they are pro government. So I think that Obama sees this as part of his transformation of America into a different country entirely."

Man: I Bought Every Pie At Burger King To Spite Noisy Child
A man claimed he purchased every pie at a Burger King, 23 in total, to spite an absentee mother and child who kept screaming he wanted one of the pies.
The man posted his confession on Reddit and the story has gone viral online.
The man said he stopped by a Burger King to get lunch and had a headache before he walked in. The next people who got in line were a mother and child, who was noisy and crying and repeatedly screamed, “I want a f---ing pie!”
The man said he had to wait in line longer than usual for fast food due to staff being trained during the lunch hour. The long wait allowed for his headache to turn into a migraine with the screaming child behind him.

We’re All Criminals and Outlaws in the Eyes of the American Police State
Why are we seeing such an uptick in Americans being arrested for such absurd “violations” as letting their kids play at a park unsupervised, collecting rainwater and snow runoff on their own property, growing vegetables in their yard, and holding Bible studies in their living room?
Mind you, we’re not talking tickets or fines or even warnings being issued to these so-called “lawbreakers.” We’re talking felony charges, handcuffs, police cars, mug shots, pat downs, jail cells and criminal records.
Consider what happened to Nicole Gainey, the Florida mom who was arrested and charged with child neglect for allowing her 7-year-old son to visit a neighborhood playground located a half mile from their house.
For the so-called “crime” of allowing her son to play at the park unsupervised, Gainey was interrogated, arrested and handcuffed in front of her son, and transported to the local jail where she was physically searched, fingerprinted, photographed and held for seven hours and then forced to pay almost $4000 in bond in order to return to her family. Gainey’s family and friends were subsequently questioned by the Dept. of Child Services. Gainey now faces a third-degree criminal felony charge that carries with it a fine of up to $5,000 and 5 years in jail.
For Denise Stewart, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, whether or not she had done anything wrong, was sufficient to get her arrested.

More Crap From Annapolis: Tell You What, Write Your Own Letters In Support Of What YOU Stand For & Spread The Word
Weeks ago, before all the headlines, Maryland's Governor Martin O'Malley began conversations with senior White House officials, local leaders in Maryland, and members of the Maryland Congressional delegation to establish a plan to care for some of the children fleeing violence in three Central American countries.
Marylanders are compassionate people, and Maryland families have taken in more children per capita than any other state in the country.
Governor O'Malley has suffered attacks for speaking forcefully about the humanitarian crisis on our border. But none of us can be silent if we expect Congress to have the courage to act, and we must make our voices heard today.
Will you write a Letter to the Editor of your local paper encouraging Congress to ensure these children are treated humanely and given the chance to make their case for asylum in front of an immigration judge?
Three years ago, Maryland passed the Dream Act. There was a heated debate with a lot of ugly rhetoric, but it passed in the legislature and the people of Maryland ratified it at the polls.
Governor O'Malley has always believed that our diversity is a great strength. Stand with him in this fight by writing a Letter to the Editor of your local paper.

5 Reasons Not to Trust the 'What Me Worry' Media About Ebola
The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is serious and spreading. Almost 1000 people are dead. Two Ebola patients, American missionaries, have come home for treatment. A patient in New York who just returned from West Africa is currently being tested for the deadly disease.
The response by some in the American mainstream media can be summed up in two words: "Stop panicking."
I'm not panicked over Ebola; nor am I alarmed or freaked out. I also believe it was the right decision to bring those two Americans suffering from this dreadful virus back to America. We're Americans. That's who we are.
I am, though, concerned about Ebola. And for five perfectly rational reasons, I do not trust the What Me Worry Mainstream Media to tell us the full truth about a potential outbreak:
1. The Mainstream Media Love to Lord Their Superiority Over Us - Accusing the hoi polloi of panicking and then calling for calm is the first knee-jerk reaction of anyone who gets off on puffing themselves up as Our Betters. And that is our media personified.
I believe and worry that the need to preen their superiority over us could affect the media's judgment. That's why the bloodless, slide-rule, Big Government-worshipping Spocks at Business Insider are already accusing others of panic … even though no one is panicking.

Another Settlement – JP Morgan Receives Slap On The Wrist Despite Years Of Fraudulent CFTC Data
The Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has been long viewed as one of the most corrupt of American institutions – and that’s saying a lot. Putting aside all the accusations with regard to silver manipulation in recent years, the most stunning controversy occurred back in 2010 when a retiring judge accused the other remaining judge of being a total bought and paid for Wall Street crony.
The retiring judge was George Painter, who accused fellow judge Bruce Levine of not once ever ruling in favor of an investor in his 20 years on the bench. Not only that, but he claimed this was the result of a promise Levine made to Wendy Gramm, the former head of the CFTC and the wife of Phil Gramm. Phil Gramm was the Congressman who spearheaded the repeal of Glass-Steagall in 1999, which is seen by many (including myself) as one of the most catastrophic pieces of legislation in American history since it laid the groundwork for the financial crisis of 2008, as well as the continued cancerous permanence and power of TBTF banks. FiredogLake covered the CFTC controversy in 2010:
An Administrative Law Judge at the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission), George Painter, revealed in his retirement letter that a colleague of his, Judge Bruce Levine, has never awarded a case in favor of a plaintiff in 20 years on the bench. He traces this back to a deal Levine made with Wendy Gramm, the former head of the CFTC and the wife of Phil Gramm (R-Enron and UBS). Indeed, the numbers check out, at least for the time period we know about; Judge Levine has never decided in favor of a plaintiff, i.e. never decided in favor of an investor crying mistreatment or fraud by a commodity dealer or major broker in commodity futures and derivatives trading.
Here’s why Painter accused Levine of this misconduct: there are only two Administrative Law judges at the CFTC. “If I simply announced my intention to retire,” Judge Painter says in his letter, “the seven reparation cases on my docket would be reassigned to the only other administrative law judge at the commission, Judge Levine. This I cannot do in good conscience.” He wanted his docket to transfer to an admin law judge at the SEC or FERC instead.

A confident and clueless president
With Obama, choosing the left path is always right
President Obama returned from his full-time job as the Democratic Party’s fundraiser-in-chief to host today’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. As he winged his way back to Washington from Kansas City aboard Air Force One, the president sat for an interview with editors of The Economist.
The interview was pure Barack Obama, and it revealed him for what he is — an intellectually agile partisan fantasist. According to Mr. Obama, there really haven’t been that many problems, but those we may be experiencing are the fault not of his policies or leadership, but of the fact that he continues to have to contend with dysfunctional, partisan opposition.
According to the president, he’s done a great job both at home and abroad. We’ve got the international balance about right, he suggests, neglecting to mention the glitches we’ve encountered in Ukraine, the Middle East or the South China Sea, and his domestic initiatives have proven remarkably successful. The economy is doing better than anyone might have expected, given the mess he inherited and everyone should be happy except perhaps corporate types, who consider complaining about overregulation and the like part of their jobs.

Why Student Loans Are Crushing The Housing Recovery In 1 Chart
As The WSJ reports, loan-application data show clear signs of growing student-debt burdens. Through the first half of this year, applicants with student debt carried more than $35,000 in student loans. As most people know, a key metric that mortgage underwriters use to evaluate a borrowers' ability to repay a loan is their total debt-to-income ratio.
It’s this metric that can make student loans a big negative in the loan approval process since new rules that took effect this year place greater legal liability on lenders to properly verify 'affordability' (or debt-to-income ratio). As the following chart shows, and one lender noted, "between the approved universe and the denied universe, a few hundred dollars in student loan debt can push the debt-to-income above the approved threshold."

Authorities Investigate Ocean City Diving Accident
OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Maryland authorities are investigating a diving accident in Ocean City that left a Pennsylvania man critically injured.
Maryland Natural Resources Police say it occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday night as a group was returning a pontoon boat to a rental facility after visiting Seacrets bar.
Authorities say 23-year-old Kiefer Kuhn of Dover, Pennsylvania, dove head first from the slow-moving boat into very shallow waters of Isle of Wight Bay.

Crisis mode: Obama leadership woes sinking Dem hopes
The WSJ/NBC News poll dropped like a bucket of cold water on Washington, where fevered attacks over legislative minutiae and blame-placing in recent weeks has caused politicians to forget what is actually going on. And what’s going on is that Americans are deeply frustrated with their president, his refusal to govern by normal means and his handling of crises at our border and around the world. Foreign policy seldom intrudes into the midterm election discussion, but when the world seems to be falling apart, Americans get anxious and upset with their commander in chief and his party. That’s clearly what’s happening here. Sixty percent of respondents said the U.S. is in decline, only 35 percent were satisfied with America’s role in the world, and just 21 percent said that the next generation would be better off.
The president likes to say that he can act alone on domestic issues, a dubious supposition. But on international affairs, an area in which American presidents have enormous latitude, the situation is dire. Respondents offered a negative assessment of the U.S. response to the Ukrainian war, the Syrian civil war, the conflict in Gaza, the rise of ISIS and especially the flow of illegal immigrant minors across the southern border. Just 11 percent were satisfied with the handling of the border crisis. Overall, just 36 percent of respondents approved of Obama’s handling of foreign policy, 12 points lower than ahead of the 2010 vote.

Girl Ambushed By 7 Cops For Carrying Water Wins $212k From Va. Taxpayers
The state of Virginia will spend $212,500 in taxpayer funds to settle a $40 million lawsuit filed by Elizabeth Daly, the University of Virginia student who spent a night and much of the next day in jail after seven cunningly plain-clothed agents from the Alcoholic Beverage Control division ambushed her for the crime of purchasing bottled water.
Attorneys for Daly reached the settlement agreement with lawyers with the Virginia Attorney General late Wednesday, reports The Daily Progress.
Daly’s attorneys filed her complaint in March. The 12 counts include constitutional rights violations and the use of excessive force. The defendants in the case are the state and the seven agents from the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control agency.
The incident happened last June, after Daly (then 20, now 21) and two of her friends purchased a sky-blue carton of LaCroix sparkling water, cookie dough and ice cream at a local supermarket.

Cops Pull Guns On Innocent Man; Aren’t Charging Him ‘As a Courtesy’ [VIDEO]
Louisiana State Police drew their guns on a man during a traffic stop and threw him to the ground even though he had done nothing wrong, and now the agency is saying that, “as a courtesy,” it is not charging the man with a crime.
Shamarr Allen, a popular New Orleans musician, was pulled over early in the morning on July 23. During the stop, an officer pulled a gun on him and, Allen claims, another said, “You move one time, I’m going to blow your head off.”
Allen’s story was widely reported in the local media. Police disputed his claims that they mishandled the 33-year-old trumpet player.
The agency released video of the incident to the media on Tuesday.

State To Regulate Popular Uber Service
WBAL's Derek Williams speaks with Uber spokesman Taylor Bennett.
The state body that oversees utilities and transportation in Maryland ruled Wednesday that a popular Web-based ride-sharing service is subject to state regulation.
The Public Service Commission ruled that Uber Technologies Inc. is a common carrier - a company that moves people or goods for hire - and as a result, is subject to the same regulations as all other passenger-for-hire services.
Uber is a ride-sharing company that connects drivers with passengers using a smartphone application.
The ruling is in response to an appeal Uber filed with the Public Service Commission after Chief Public Utility Law Judge Terry Romaine ordered the company to apply for a motor carrier permit. Uber, which has been operating in Maryland since January 2013, appealed Romaine's order, arguing that it should not be subject to regulation under the PSC because of its status as a technology company, and because it simply arranges rides between freelance drivers and passengers and does not directly operate a fleet of cars.

Fed Finally Finds The 230 Trillion Number: Blasts Banks' "Living Wills", Says Taxpayers Still On The Hook
Having torched Janet Yellen over the weakness of the so-called "living wills" of the Too-Big-To-Fail banks it appears Elizabeth Warren's tirade struck home. As WSJ reports, in a sweeping rebuke to Wall Street, U.S. regulators said 11 of the nation's biggest banks haven't demonstrated they can collapse without causing broad, damaging economic repercussions and ordered them to show "significant" progress by July 2015. Of course, the whole 'living will' concept is a self-referential joke, but we leave it to Thomas Hoenig to sum it up: "the plans provide no credible or clear path through bankruptcy that doesn't require unrealistic assumptions and direct or indirect public support." In other words, taxpayers are still on the hook.
In other words, the Fed finally figured out something that is so obvious, even five year olds were well aware: namely that banks fading into darkness, by way of living wills, is sheer idiocy.

Joe Biden wants the 'nation of Africa' to prosper
It seems Vice President Joseph R. Biden can add another gaffe to his already-impressive list. During his speech Tuesday at the United States-Africa Business Forum, Mr. Biden referred to the entire continent of Africa as one “nation.”
“If Africa’s governance and institutions can put its people in a position commensurate with their possibilities, the sky is the limit,” the vice president said. “I mean, it is limitless.

The federal government has created more than 400 new crimes since 2008, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS).
In a June report to the House Over-Criminalization Task Force, the CRS identified 439 new criminal offenses to the U.S. Code between 2008 and 2013.
A 2008 analysis by the law scholar John S. Baker for the Heritage Foundation found that, between 2000 and 2007, the government added 452 crimes to the books, indicating the government has increased the rate at which it created new crimes.

Russian Retaliation: Putin Orders Ban On All Food Imports From Sanctioning Countries For A Year
Last week we noted Russia was considering banning fruit from Europe (as well as various other sanctions retaliations) but this morning Vladimir Putin has come out swinging by signing 'a decree on countermeasures to Western sanctions':
*PUTIN BANS FOOD IMPORTS FROM COUNTRIES SANCTIONING RUSSIA: IFX
*PUTIN ORDERS GOVT TO PREVENT ACCELERATED GROWTH OF FOOD PRICES
So trade wars escalate externally and price controls internally. It appears the US (and Europe) will indeed feel "tangible losses" despite Jack Lew's promises.

Martin O’Malley Slams White House ‘Spin’
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is pushing back against the White House for spreading a “misrepresentation” of his comments on the housing of undocumented Central American children along the border.
The Democratic governor’s comments Tuesday night continued his dispute with the Obama administration over the issue. White House officials have accused O’Malley of refusing to open a group facility in Westminster, Md., for some of the Central American children after saying that they should not be sent back to their home countries.
Speaking with Fusion anchor Jorge Ramos on Tuesday evening, O’Malley said the White House was putting political “spin” on his comments.

Court: Firing for Poor Performance, Not Racism
Professor was hired based on race but fired based on incompetence.
A professor who was hired based on her race has lost an anti-discrimination lawsuit in which she claimed she was fired based on her race.
The University of New Hampshire hired Roslyn Chavda during a hiring freeze, then fired her after she received poor performance reviews and failed to publish in scholarly journals.
In the court opinion, New Hampshire district judge Laynda McCafferty stated that criticizing an employee for poor work performance is not discrimination.
“Although she refers to ‘venom’ hurled by her colleagues, the only venom of which she provides any evidence consists of comments about her deficiencies in teaching, scholarship, and interactions with colleagues in the department,” McCafferty wrote.

Obama: 'The American People WANT Me to Sign All These Executive Orders'
The single quotes in this article’s headline denote a paraphrase of something Obama basically said Wednesday at his U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit specifically in defense of his use of executive orders to bypass Congress whenever he feels like it.
Quote:
“The American people don’t want me just standing around twiddling my thumbs and waiting for Congress to get something done,” Obama said.
Really? The American people don’t want the president of the United States to follow the Constitution?

Family secret: What the left won't tell you about black crime
In the summer of 2013, after neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, a Hispanic, was acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, the political left wanted to have a discussion about everything except the black crime rates that lead people to view young black males with suspicion. President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder wanted to talk about gun control. The NAACP wanted to talk about racial profiling. Assorted academics and MSNBC talking heads wanted to discuss poverty, “stand-your-ground” laws, unemployment and the supposedly racist criminal justice system. But any candid debate on race and criminality in the United States must begin with the fact that blacks are responsible for an astoundingly disproportionate number of crimes, which has been the case for at least the past half a century.
Crime began rising precipitously in the 1960s after the Supreme Court, under Chief Justice Earl Warren, started tilting the scales in favor of the criminals. Some 63 percent of respondents to a Gallup poll taken in 1968 judged the Warren Court, in place from 1953 to 1969, too lenient on crime; but Warren’s jurisprudence was supported wholeheartedly by the liberal intellectuals of that era, as well as by politicians who wanted to shift blame for criminal behavior away from the criminals. Popular books of the time, like Karl Menninger’s “The Crime of Punishment,” argued that “law and order” was an “inflammatory” term with racial overtones. “What it really means,” said Menninger, “is that we should all go out and find the n–– and beat them up.”

You Have To See This! Dem Gov.: White House Tried to ‘Spin’ My Position on Immigration
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has been outspoken about the plight of undocumented children at the border, but got in a bit of a public spat after telling the White House not to send them to a Maryland facility. O’Malley appeared on Fusion tonight and said that his position was unfairly spun by the White House.
Jorge Ramos asked O’Malley about this apparent “double standard” of his on the issue. O’Malley said, “I think sadly that was a spin and a misrepresentation that some at the White House tried to put out in order to discredit the larger point that I was making.”
He says the site he was warning the White House not to send the children too is in a not-so-friendly part of town “where some really hateful graffiti was sprayed on buildings.” O’Malley said the White House should be looking for other places to send these kids instead of being insistent.

Mikulski, Cardin Announce Federal Funding For Dorchester Fire Departments
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sens. Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin, both D-Md., announced Tuesday, Aug. 5, that $832,390 in federal grant funding has been awarded among seven volunteer fire departments in Dorchester County through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The regional award will be used to purchase life-saving firefighting equipment.
“I know how important this funding is to Maryland communities — often it’s the difference between life and death. First responders protect our homes and communities, and the federal government has a responsibility to protect them by providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs safer and smarter,” Mikulski said. “Every day when our first responders report for duty, they don’t know what they will face. That’s why I fight every year for the equipment, training, and staffing our protectors and communities deserve.”
“The men and women of Maryland’s VFD’s put their lives on the line everyday to keep our communities safe,” Cardin said. “I am proud to fight for the federal investments that help ensure our first responders make it home safe and sound. These Dorchester County VFD’s are committed to excellence, but they need a federal partner to make sure they have the equipment and training they need to get the job done.”

Despite 2012 law, casino interests and Md. candidates remain intertwined
Maryland lawmakers made it illegal in 2012 for casino owners to make donations to political candidates, a move intended to curb the influence of a deep-pocketed industry new to the state.
The ban, however, is limited and has done little to stop the flow of funds associated with one prolific donor: William M. Rickman Jr., a Montgomery County developer and owner of the Casino at Ocean Downs on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Eleven companies owned or affiliated with Rickman and his family have contributed more than $86,000 to Maryland candidates since the ban took effect in October 2012, according to a Washington Post review of State Board of Elections records and company filings with the state.

The Slide To Collapse Is Greased With Self-Interest
Self-interest is intrinsically self-liquidating on a systemic level.
One enduring if rarely stated principle of Neoliberal Democracy is that the single-minded pursuit of self-interest magically produces an equilibrium which serves everyone's interests well enough to avoid the destabilization of rebellion or systemic collapse.
Let's start by defining Neoliberal Democracy: neoliberalism sees markets as the only efficient, fair and durable method of organizing resource extraction and the social order: governance, employment, distribution of income, etc. Turning every social and economic function into a marketplace ensures that market forces provide the discipline and transparency participants need to make prudent choices and investments.
Democracy is a political marketplace in which votes replace investor and consumer decisions as the mechanisms that enforce discipline and transparency.
The melding of these two ideologies is clearly natural, as both see a transparent market as the best possible system for both governance and and the economy.
