Mayor Jim Ireton & County Executive Rick Pollitt Couldn't Care Less About Veterans
Joe each morning as I go to work I pass by a home who is flying the U.S Flag upside down. Not only is this disrespectful, but a violation of federal law. I understand there is no punishment for this as it would violate their freedom of speech. Perhaps this home should know that freedom along with a lot of other freedoms was fought for under this very flag. As a veteran I can't help ask what sacrifices they have made to preserve our freedoms. To those in the 800 block of S. Division St. fly it right or take it down.
Where is this.
ReplyDeleteRead the last sentence. "To those in the 800 block of S. Division St. fly it right or take it down."
ReplyDeleteIf its Illegal y isn't there a punishment for it?
ReplyDelete9:40, You have to have a LEADER who is willing to ENFORCE the law.
ReplyDeleteWe have a mayor that wears Panties.
DeleteFlying the flag up-side down is a signal for distress.Since our once great Country is in distress, maybe it's being flown correctly.
ReplyDeleteThis is a distress (martial law) statement, not an error. Wake up to the State of our Union.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 10:10 we need help
ReplyDeleteI heartily agree with 10:10AM & 10:15AM.
ReplyDeleteFlying the United States Colors upside down is, as is stated, a signal of distress.., and we, as a nation, are damn sure in distress. Whomever is doing this is making a profound statement of truth.
Ginn, all the more reason the Police or Elected Officials should be talking to this property owner. Clearly this is upsetting to a VETERAN. The flag is also faded and out of respect they should replace it.
ReplyDeleteThe Salisbury mayor has 0 balz ,Period.
DeleteBetter run to Wal-Mart and buy a new one made in China.
ReplyDeleteIf the "veteran" were intelligent, he would speak out about the illegal government in Washington DC.
ReplyDeleteCome on man. There are a lot of problems in this terrible country!
Make a statement. Stop worrying about someone's flag and worry about the government itself!
@JoeAlbero and the US Veteran: It is NOT ILLEGAL to fly the US Flag upside down!!!! The flag of the United States is sometimes symbolically burned, often in protest of the policies of the American government, both within the country and abroad. The United States Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), and reaffirmed in U.S. v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990), has ruled that due to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, it is unconstitutional for a government (whether federal, state, or municipality) to prohibit the desecration of a flag, due to its status as "symbolic speech." However, content-neutral restrictions may still be imposed to regulate the time, place, and manner of such expression.
ReplyDeleteFlying an American flag upside down is not necessarily meant as political protest. The practice has its origin in a distress signal; displaying a flag in this manner is "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property";[81] it has been used by extension to make a statement about distress in civic, political, or other areas.
As a US Veteran you should not find this offensive at all! Since the GOVERNMENT is screwing you more than it is any other person!
Therefore the police and elected officials have no reason to address this property owner who is expressing his First Amendment right!
Your points are taken, Joe, and perhaps your suggestion is in order with regard to the condition of the flag and the Veteran's concern.
ReplyDeleteHowever.., "The United States Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), and reaffirmed in U.S. v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990), has ruled that due to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, it is unconstitutional for a government (whether federal, state, or municipality) to prohibit the desecration of a flag, due to its status as "symbolic speech."" And, "36 US Code §176 provides: “The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” It can also be viewed as an act of desecration."
Joe, the cops nor the city gov't have any legal authority nor right to approach the property about this issue. I would suggest a representative of a Veteran's organization, VFW, American Legion, VA etc be asked to interview the property owner on behalf of all Veterans.
Ginn & Others,
ReplyDeleteLet's keep in mind that this is a letter to the editor. It was brought forth by someone else, not me.
That being said, I agree with the author.
As many of you have seen from past photos, ALL of my homes fly the American Flag.
I wouldn't dare fly a faded flag, let alone disrespect the flag and ALL who have defended it upside down, no matter what.
Now, that being said, agree to disagree, I'm cool with that. However, this is MY opinion in this comment and NOTHING you say will change my feelings about it. I respect your opinion but I will disagree with it.
Fair enough, Joe.
ReplyDeleteWe should display our flag with honor while we still can. I think of all the men and women who have gone to foreign countries to hopefully defend our country and its flag. There is lots of blood on that flag. My OPINION is love it or leave it!!! to the people who fly our flag upside down/burn it/etc. they are a disgrace to themselves and OUR country. That is my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI am in Distress and will take a Dump on there LAwn,
ReplyDelete12:25
ReplyDeleteDo you know what the term "distress" means with respect to the US Government?
12:23
You sir, are simply unaware that your Country's government is evil. That does not mean you or your fellow Americans are evil. Unless of course you refuse to act upon this knowledge.
The US flag's origins are occult in nature and its symbols have meaning of which most Citizens know nothing.
ReplyDeleteThe 13 original pentagrams in a circle has obvious allusions to the witches' coven of the 13 "colonies". The blood red and virgin white stripes (13 again) are references to the ritual sacrifices which take place on battlefields. The soldiers are regarded as goy (non important humans) and as such are used merely as cannon fodder for the imperial wars of this Nation.
It is a very ugly flag and its hidden meaning is ominous. My advice is to learn a little about the origins of the flag and this Country most of us call home.
American People are ignorant of the occult practices and of freemasonry in general.
223, that's about as negative as I could think, unless you could possibly add how Satan is represented as well.
ReplyDeleteI find it totally impossible to believe that Betsy Ross, sitting there sewing up the American Flag, was sticking pins in dolls and stirring a pot of witches brew on the side, but hey, I wasn't there, and neither were you!
Maybe you should start a revolution that takes over this oppressive government and save the rest of us the trouble, as this Country is in dire straits right now!
