Actually, for those who care to be fully informed, Amber Nicole's is closing so the owner can focus on her side business, Barefoot Bride, full-time. Wedding planning is her passion. It is the owner's decision to leave.
I plan to vote to Bob Culver but no need for anti-Rick comments when it's not based on truth.
anonymous 9:54, With all due respect, IF our Eastern Shore economy was on the same rebound as most businesses are on the Western Shore, (so to speak) we wouldn't see this business closing.
We'd see growth and that simply has not happened under Rick Pollitt.
I hate to discourage Jim Ireton and Jake Day as they attempt to rebuild Downtown but you are going to see more and more of this as time goes on.
The Downtown still has parking meters and that is the biggest contributor towards failing businesses there.
Jake Day refuses to recognize that and in fact strongly encourages the meters, bad choice.
SBYNews has delivered jobs reports for the County and we have proven that while more and more people move here to Wicomico County, job losses are at a record loss throughout the history of the County and that does not include all of the new people relocating here.
While it is sad to see businesses closing their doors, get used to it. Jake, Jim and Rick are convincing young people to open businesses here but I can assure you, they will unfortunately not last. The Downtown Revitalization will be short lived, unless you get new leadership that is far more business friendly. If they have a "D" next to their name, the ONLY businesses that will survive Downtown are businesses like the Health Department or the IRS. You know, businesses YOUR tax dollars support.
There are two other bridal shops downtown already so anyone who did choose to buy and keep it going would be making a mistake.
Make no mistake - Amber Nicole's did a good business there. It was a FAMILY business - the family chose not to sell, simply to close so they could move on.
As a note - I am all for local businesses. I am from the Eastern Shore but live on the Western Shore now because - duh, the job market is much better here right now. I got married a year ago. All of my vendors were local businesses, including my dress which was from a downtown store. It's sad to see another local business go but instead of pointing fingers, we can just accept the owner is choosing to take her OTHER LOCAL BUSINESS to the next level and move on.
I'm ready to move on from this issue but do want to thank you Joe for posting so many versatile articles about the local issues. I'm not registered to vote on the Eastern Shore but have noticed more and more on my trips home that I heard SBYNews come up in discussions and conversations begin talking about candidates and their platforms. Thanks for keeping the conversation going!
The Business may not have a demand. Could also be their prices. Stores open and close all the time. Everybody opening a business knows going in, it's a gamble.
11:16 just to clue you in....more young people flocking here then you can count....big companies coming..great jobs...yeh alittle rain for a few months..when your freezin your butt off paying out your a$$ to heat your home im on the beach enjoying the weather......face it the shore can't compete.....
The key idea for today is be informed. She is moving on to something else. There are plenty of bridal places on the Shore. Stop the rhetoric at that. The Shore is in dire need of a diverse economic plan to provide jobs at all income points. For all of the bickering back and forth is anyone asking candidates specifically how they are going to make this happen?
Its not the candidates job to creat jobs and open businesses.....again eliminate the bypasses......bring more people through salisbury instead of around it.....not hard to figure out.....
Yeah, 2:54, and put up gates across the road and rout the cars into parking lots with a validation ticket. Make it so they can't leave before buying something from a store in the City.
I lived on the shore before and after the bypasses and it doesnt take much to figure out that when people drive past a town on a bypass there isnt a chance for them to spend any money in town....so 504 its not to hard to understand...well maybe for you....notice the the big box stores before and after the bypasses.....for the record I was raised in new jersey....spent nearly 15 years in delmarva...and now reside in naples florida...when a bypass is mentioned here it is squashed quickly.....and for good reason....to protect local businesses...
Give the local people what they want downtown and they will support the effort. Keep charging to park and building bars and family business will dry up and blow away. Give me something to go downtown for..and a safe place to park... and I will go. Not until!!
I hate to see a store close, but one has to wonder about the research done prior to opening this venture...
ReplyDeleteExcessive taxes and regulations chokes businesses. period...
ReplyDeleteThanks Rick - another notch in your very large belt.

One reason I don't shop or partake downtown is the parking issue.
ReplyDelete9:58 Yeah, but it's Florida. Old people... no thanks. Oh look, a rain storm coming to ruin our day.
