17-Year-Old Honor Student ‘Disgusted’ After Being Expelled for Making This ‘Honest Mistake’

She’s an honor student who said she made an honest mistake.

That mistake got her expelled, and on Monday her school board followed a draconic zero-tolerance policy and voted unanimously to keep most of her punishment in place.

When she nabbed a summer job that required her to bike between southwest Detroit and Dearborn, Michigan, 17-year-old Atiya Haynes’ grandfather gave her a pocketknife with which to protect herself, WJBK-TV reported.

She said she forgot it was in her purse — until security guards found it during a bag check at an Annapolis High School football game, leading to her expulsion.

  1. Yeah, Annapolis isn't in Michigan. And I believe this girl got a bad deal under an unfortunate rule.

  2. So What, we got little kids that chew a pop tart into a gun shape getting expelled. Zero tolerance is zero items, zero excuses.

  4. the rules are there for a reason. its truly unfortunate, but you cant let her stay and kick out the kid that brought the same weapon to do harm.

  5. This honor student is stupid.
To get completely cleared of any guilt or responsibility whatsoever, she should have referred to her honest mistake, her lapse in judgment, her culpability in this matter, simply as "a breach in protocol".
That terminology has (so far) cleared the administration of our country of any wrongdoing in a situation that theoretically could wipe out a sizable portion of our US population.
I should certainly work for a penknife.

  6. I've always felt that a pocket knife was a tool. When the hell did it become classified as only a weapon? Did your 107th Congress have something to do with it???
She could have done as much wrong with a nail file or hat pin or broken compact mirror, for crying out loud.
Like the rabbit says, "I see stupid people".

  7. Just because someone is an honor student doesn't mean they can't be "gangsta" as well.

  8. I drive a pick up and carry a tool kit. I transport 4 or 5 10" screwdrivers. Does that mean I can be arrested for concealed weapons?

  9. @11:49 Annapolis High School is located in Dearborn Heights Michigan - which is in MICHIGAN!!!! They have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy and she violated it! I personally wonder how many times she FORGOT it was in her purse and took it into the hallways of school!

  10. I've carried a Buck 110 on my belt for 50 years, and guess what? It never hurt anyone! Well, except me once when I was using it for something stupid...

Zero Tolerance rules are useless and stupid.

It's the crime that's illegal, not the tool used.
