PRINCE GEORGE'S CO. WOMAN KILLED IN CRASH INVOLVING STATE POLICE CADET

(LANHAM, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a police vehicle driven by a State Police civilian employee that struck two vehicles on I-495 in Prince George’s County this morning.

The victim is identified as Karen Holt-Williams, 59, of Temple Hills, Md. She was transported to Prince George’s Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Maryland State Police vehicle is identified as Cadet Sebastian L. Reyes, 18. Reyes has been employed as a cadet in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division for eight months. Reyes and the other State Police cadet riding with him both refused treatment.

A third driver is identified as Amy A. Nash, 55, of Largo, Md. She said she was not injured in the crash. Two passengers in her car also reported no injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 8:30 a.m. today, Reyes was driving an unmarked 2006 Ford Expedition on a routine assignment and was not driving with lights or siren activated. Reyes was apparently on the inner loop of I-495 when he used a crossover for emergency vehicles south of Rt. 50 to access the outer loop and head in the opposite direction. The investigation indicates Reyes pulled into the fast lane of the outer loop and accelerated to what witnesses describe as a high rate of speed. He was traveling in lane four of the interstate north of Rt. 50 when he lost control and sideswiped a 2000 Lincoln, driven and solely occupied by Holt-Williams.

The Lincoln then traveled to the left across the interstate and struck the jersey wall on the fast shoulder. The Ford Expedition went into a spin and struck a 2011 Subaru Outback driven by Nash.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded and is conducting a detailed crash investigation. Troopers notified the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office of the fatal crash and a member of that office responded to the scene. When complete, the State Police crash investigation will be presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review and a determination regarding charges in this crash.

In addition to the crash investigation, a Maryland State Police administrative investigation will also be conducted. This will review the employee’s actions according to Maryland State Police policies and procedures.

Anyone who witnessed this crash is urged to contact Cpl. Zimmerman, the Maryland State Police Crash Team investigator. He can be reached at the State Police La Plata Barrack at 301-392-1231.

Reyes has been placed on leave. Maryland State Police cadets are civilian employees from 18-21 years old who work in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. Reyes was assigned to the commercial vehicle weigh station at the I-95/I-495 Park and Ride near College Park.

  1. yup another perfect example how cops or even so called civilian cops which are still cops, do whatever they want with no care in the world...

And since this guy was at fault nothing will happen... I promise you that...

So the family should sue him in court but civil so he doesn't get a free paid by us lawyer to defend him...

  2. It's OK. This kid was "specially trained" to drive an SUV across traffic and at high rates of speed. Obviously, the rest of us should have stopped our cars so that we don't injure him during high speed maneuvers. The report will show this.

  3. Listen folks,
The police MUST drive faster than everyone else so they can catch up to the criminals.

This guy may have made a mistake. But that is tolerated in favor of having the police in control of the roads.

If regular people would slow down then the police won't have to drive so fast. The bottom line, is they are protecting us from idiots who drive too fast.

  8. Sounds like this wanna-be cop has gotten off to a great start within the police state that is the new America. He's not even a real cop yet and he's already gotten a verified kill under his belt. This kid is just exactly what our 'out-of-control' cops are looking for. We can all look forward to much, much more out of this up and coming cop.

  9. Yup, give 2 eighteen year olds an overpowered police SUV to drive back and forth to work, and expect nothing to happen.

  10. 3:03 they were with the commercial vehicle division not assigned to traffic or regular duties! They do not have to speed to stop a commercial vehicle to check his logs or for a safety inspection/overweight vehicle. The cadet was 'hot dogging' it lost control, crashed and caused a death!

  11. 3:03PM, you're an idiot!
If you believe that cops only drive above the speed limit to catch a 'perp' then you are off your meds and need to be readmitted. Cops, all cops, misuse and abuse their authority constantly and always. They're out of control and need to be reigned in on by the people they've sworn to protect and serve. And, if our representatives won't sponsor legislation to do just that then it's time for referendums on ballots to bring these "legal criminals" back to reality.

  12. Eighteen years old? What the hell is he doing driving a Md state police vehicle? They say the brain is not fully matured until age 25,I sure as hell wouldn't want my safety to be dependent on some 18year old.

    1. What about the 18 year olds that volunteer to serve our country. Can't have your cake and eat it too. Your comment is nothing but ignorance. What a fantasy world you live in. Can you give me some examples on how to live, since you've obviously never made a mistake and since you're obviously an expert on the brain and how it matures. Ass.

  13. Unbelievable! Two kids given the keys to such a vehicle, the authority to pull over truckers, etc.

Really, how much actual experience behind any wheel, let alone the one he was driving could he have?

How often do you think he was pulling BatTurns?

  14. 3:03 is EXACTLY the reason homicides like this occur. A hot dog police sociopath with a weapon. 3:03's is ignorance on a keyboard, the 18 year old wannabe cop's was an SUV on steroids.

  15. Anon 8:51 Cadets start at 18. There is an explorer program but they do nothing but sit at the barracks and do paperwork. These were two Cadets. Neither has any authority to pull over cars. They were probabally on some type of vehicle transfer or food run and missed a turn. Hence the u-turn. They shouldn't have been in the car alone or driving the vehicle. I'm sure there will be a memo about it first thing on Monday about who can drive what.

  16. Seeing all these people on here full of hate makes me sick. So quick to judge somebody without even knowing them. This kid is like a brother to me. He is the most devoted and hardworking person I have ever met. His whole dream was always to be a Maryland State Trooper. He has worked so hard in his life to get to where he is now. He will be the first person to be there for you if you need help, completely selfless in every way.He has been there for me more times than I can count an has been the greatest friend you could ask for. Anybody who is 18 years old is still not an experienced driver. Teenagers make mistakes all the time while driving. You hear about teenagers being in car crashes every single day yet just because he is a cadet you all want to watch him burn. You people throw so much hate at a young man just because he is in the police. I bet these comments would be a lot less judgmental if it was just some random college kid who made a mistake instead of a cadet. seriously nobody here has even commented about the family of the woman who died, or about how this poor kid's dreams are now on the line because of one mistake. No matter how you look at this it is a huge tragedy. If he gets criminal charges everything he lives for is gone and all you people care about is bashing him for being in the police. Put yourself in his shoes and then you can judge. accidents happen and i'm sure plenty of you have made mistakes in your life. He joined the police because he wanted to help the people and protect them. That was his dream. He made a simple traffic mistake and now his whole world is crushed. Next time you get raped, robbed, assaulted, or your kids get kidnapped who are you going to go to for help? Everybody hates the cops until the time they need them. It's people like you that make me lose faith in society.

wahhhh cry me a river of bacon. we see everyday what kops do, and it is not walking old ladies across the street.

kops are hated because they do hateful things. period.

I will never call a kop. If someone breaks in, I'll just shoot them and throw them in the woods somewhere. Kops are not here to help anyone other than corps. and other elitists.

    Screw em.

  19. 11:59 thanks to officers like you, American prisons are filled with people, like your cop brother, who only made a simple mistake. Maybe you should have helped your bro out before he made a mistake and killed an innocent person. He should pay for it, don't you think? I wouldn't feel sorry for him if he got a life sentence.

Anyone who wants to be a cop is not thinking of helping anyone but themselves, period!
If this kid was so eager to help society out he'd studied law and defended people against the oppression these gd cops are puking all over this society you claim he wanted to help. Cops don't help anyone but themselves and their brothers in blue.
As for your concern with Ms. Holt-Williams' family, I am certain they are overwrought with grief atm and are searching for answers why their loved one has been taken from them by such thoughtless actions aggressive actions by an immature wannabe cop. In the coming days their grief will probably turn to anger, if it hasn't already, and they too will question law enforcement's true reason. Ultimately, Ms. Holt-Williams' family will realize she was, in fact, murdered at the hands of an adrenaline filled self serving POS cop.

  23. It appears to me that the majority of these comments have been made by anti-police pos who most likely have been arrested and are convicted felons
Furthermore, get yourr facts straight before you write a comment with such inacccurate information. This was a cadet who does NOT have police powers. In the state of MD you may not be a police officer until the age of 21. He is a civilian employee . I am outraged about the amount of disrespect on these postings....obviously if you were a law abiding citizen you would not be making such comments. With this being said...i have such sorrow for
all parties involved. There are families on both sides that have been deeply changed by this accident. For Ms. Williams family they have lost a loved one and for this cadet he will have to live with this and not to mention for you pos posting on here...he has a family as well who loves him . Maybe be more concerned about the thugs that are killing innocent children on the streets ....

It's not rocket science. Everyone CAN and SHOULD. But, you have moronic laws, lawmakers, and law enforcers that scare them to be compliant and put themselves at risk.

Not everyone is a sheep. Not everyone believes kops are the good guys. And more importantly, not everyone has ceded their power to the state.

If you don't know, you why find out.

  26. 12:24am and 11:59pm witnesses at the scene stated he pulled into traffic and accelerated at and to a high rate of speed! If that is not 'hot dogging' it and being in total disregard of others safety on the highway then please explain to us pos's how his actions were out to help all others using that stretch of highway! I am sure Ms. Williams family would be so relieved to hear how his actions were not reckless nor self serving but out to help his fellow citizens on the road!
