STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION PERFORMS EMERGENCY REPAIRS ALONG EASTBOUND US 50 AT MD 665 (ARIS T. ALLEN BLVD.)
All Lanes Closed along Eastbound US 50 at MD 665 for Pipe Collapse;
Through Drivers Along Eastbound US 50 Detoured onto MD 665;
Drivers May Consider Alternate Routes Such as MD 2, MD 450

(June 4, 2014; 9:30 p.m.) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) continues to close all lanes along eastbound US 50 at MD 665 (Aris T. Allen Boulevard). Traffic is being detoured to MD 665. Drivers may want to consider other alternate routes such as MD 10 to MD 2, and MD 424 to MD 450 to MD 2. At this time, eastbound US 50 is expected to remain closed through the night and early morning as crews complete emergency repairs.
An SHA team including engineers, a geologist and shop technicians responded immediately to reports of a pavement void between the left and center lanes of US 50. After thorough assessment, the team has concluded that a metal pipe, associated with the drainage system along US 50, has deteriorated and collapsed, which then created the surface pavement void.
Crews will fill the void with stone, and then place a concrete patch on the road surface. The roadway cavity measures approximately 24 inches in diameter and is several feet deep. SHA hydraulics department will begin design work for more permanent repairstomorrowmorning.
After the void was discovered by a driver around 5 p.m. and reported to Maryland State Police, two left lanes along eastbound US 50 were closed immediately; all lanes were closed within minutes thereafter.
SHA appreciates motorists’ patience and cooperation during the repair process. Maryland now features FREE 511 traveler information!
