Comptroller Peter Franchot is praising a vote by a state task force to recommend a longer summer break for Maryland students.
Franchot said Tuesday the later start would be good for families and Maryland tourism businesses on the Eastern Shore and in western Maryland.
The comptroller says the beginning of the school year has been creeping in the wrong direction into summer.
Franchot notes that Worcester County on the Eastern Shore has decided to go back to starting school after Labor Day.

I applaud Peter Franchot on his support of this.
ReplyDeleteDr. Freddy is adamantly opposed to starting school after labor day.
School should be all year long with time off at Memorial day, 4th of July and Labor day.
ReplyDeleteSchool should go from the day after Labor Day through the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. After Memorial Day the students do nothing but watch movies and do make up work. Students, parents and teachers are done by the end of May.
ReplyDeleteOh absolutely, year round school. Free daycare for parents who could care less about raising their children.
ReplyDeleteThey aren't raising them now and maybe with the extra time in school they might learn something. It's not like in the old days when children were needed to work on the farm in the summers.
ReplyDeleteMakes much more sense than a few days of school breaking up what might be families' last chance for summer vacation. It will pay, too, in terms of not preventing people from spending more money with retailers and holiday destinations before school starts. More spending = more taxes to cover the BOE's monster budget.
ReplyDeleteIt is believed that starting before Labor Day gives low-achieving students an extra five days of instruction before state testing in March. Maybe more work and less time messing around would accomplish the same goal.
ReplyDelete5:49 No they won't learn anything more with extra days. The curriculum wiill just get stretched out and dumbed down. Public school is a joke.

You are absolutely correct, but don't forget about the field trips to Jolly Rogers and other amusement parks.
If they "School all Year Long" morons are concerned then they should do nothing but review the last 2 weeks of school.
