ReplyDeleteNanticoke Seafood , 50 employees during regular runs , approx. 100 when running the shrimp too.
ReplyDelete5:27- so true
ReplyDeleteAnd you people think the shore can be saved........
ReplyDeleteYou forgot Service Merchandise
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't list the three sets of layoffs Perdue had at it's corporate headquarters. About 150 - mostly imports - mostly higher paying tech and accounting jobs.
ReplyDeleteHero's Sub Shop Twilley Center and I believe a Bakery in the same shopping center. More and more people are saying Gander Mountain will be closing too.
ReplyDelete6:59 - only if we 'hold handle down while flushing' the current crop of liberals and RINO's that the leeches have elected/reelected.
ReplyDeleteLOOK at all the job losses under Pollitt and Ireton. The ONLY way they can win a race is to cheat. Who in their right mind would ever elect LOSERS? Who in their right mind wants tax increases instead of experienced business people who can correct this local economy, OR AT LEAST TRY. That's something Ireton and Pollitt have NOT done. Conway and Mathias need to be added to that list as well.
ReplyDeleteNeed to figure out how to move Government jobs to Salisbury... That is the one area where employment is growing... Thanks to the Libs who are destroying free enterprise in America. Bet the idiots in Maryland put Brown in office so we can see 4 or more years of destruction.
ReplyDeleteAnd this doesn't even take into account the Standard Register and MaTech - it will be well over 9000 documented workers. And the truth be known - I'll bet you it is a lot more than that. This State/Town/County has been decimated by business exodus. And guess what, hardly no one in the MSM is monitoring this stuff except Salisbury News.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS UNBELIEVABLE! Joe - I have to hand it to your organization, you can't say you haven't warned us. I don't know how many times I have read your commentaries about this. But when you actually see these businesses, it is stunning! Where in the hell is our President, Governor? Surely they can see the handwriting on the wall. Are they so ignorant that they can't see it behind the crystal ball? GOD help us.
Incredible! I remember most all of these businesses. What a tragedy. It's almost as if you have removed a veil over my eyes as I scan over this list.
ReplyDeleteThings need to change, our state sucks !
ReplyDeleteCertainly doesn't make good for a campaign reelection platform does it. At any level, Federal, State, and/or Local. You watch though, the incumbents will try and spin the blame on someone else. I agree with Joe's 7:35 Posting, it is to late to salvage the economy between now and the election. To many years of irreparable harm to turn it around now. I personally will not be voting for Conway, Ireton, or Pollitt. If they couldn't do any better than the empirical evidence shows, then they are the problem.
ReplyDeleteI hope all of our citizens are reading this latest information. This is exactly why I use Salisbury News as my go to source because they tell it like it is. Instead of trying to make-up the News, Salisbury News reports it. This tells a very powerful story.
ReplyDelete8:49 - Seeing is believing. This certainly tells the whole story in a nutshell doesn't it. Wow, I to can remember these businesses. I had almost forgot.
ReplyDeleteI have seen this list once before and am glad you republished it. I wish you would publish it more often as it tells a very compelling story and our people need to see this. Maybe then they'll try and vote in some credible candidates.
ReplyDeleteWatermen's Cove, The Shanty, KFC, Pasco, Imperial Gallery, Lighthouse restaurant, Super Fresh, Tolley Point restaurant (next to Gordy Tiger Mart) west rt 50, when I finish my coffee I bet I can think of many more. Stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteFratelie's is selling off also.
ReplyDelete8:57-Why don't you print a copy of it and pencil in any subsequent additions.
ReplyDeleteI remember most all of these businesses. Where did you get this list? This information needs to go the National media like FOX or CNBC or ABC. When you see this kind of stuff it really opens your eyes.
ReplyDeleteI do realty appraisals and Nevada use to be No. 2 a few months ago. Now I see Maryland has moved into the No. 2 slot. And that helps to explain why my foreclosure analysis with the banks have skyrocketed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Joe, these long term incumbent office holders who have been there so long they have forgotten their roots, need to be booted out. This List tells it all.
ReplyDeleteI know how to save the Shore. But most of you will disagree. Send everyone back home, tear all this crap down, replant our crops and trees for Ag and forestry industry and build new poultry farms.
ReplyDeleteAll of you are more than welcome to come visit in OC and Assateague in the summer.
A lot of the people who scoped this area out before beginning the above companies over estimated local business potential. That was because we were once business friendly, and who would have suspected an eventual 180 to occur?
ReplyDeleteGOOD GRIEF! THIS IS AN ECONOMIC DISASTER AREA. WHAT IN THE HELL HAS HAPPENED?
ReplyDeleteJoe, Heroes has been replaced by another sub shop.
ReplyDeleteThis list would be better if had the years they closed and separated small retail and eateries into a different categories. Small businesses often don't make it past 5 years anywhere.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with your point. But don't use the same tactics they use to make your point.
They don't call this the 'BURIED' for nothing. It's because of all the dead businesses.
ReplyDeleteHow about Allegiant Airline, I don't see their name on the list either. Don't know how many they employed but it is noteworthy to add.
ReplyDeleteWith so many lost jobs one would think that our County expenses would be trimming down as a result of lost federal, state, & local income revenues.
ReplyDelete10:45, I was nor aware someone replaced heroes.
ReplyDeleteNO ONE goes into business believing they will be shut down in 5 years or less, so your statement is out of line.
Very few of you know what it costs to open even a sub shop, let alone a restaurant. It is extremely expensive.
Jobs are created, ribbon cuttings happen and local government official brag about businesses opening. So they take REDIT for something opening but God Forbid someone like Salisbury News comes along and mentions the closing of such businesses.
In your theory though, would you agree then that EVERYTHING Ireton is doing Downtown isn't worth a damn then?
Let me also add this. Have you EVER seen such a list from the Daily Times, WBOC or WMDT?
ReplyDeleteWe have been publicizing this information here for YEARS and they just keep covering it up.
WHY, because their ADVERTISERS and groups like the Chamber of Commerce put pressure on them to NOT tell people how bad the economy is doing.
This is why BLOGS are so necessary.
Back to the foreclosures,A lot of college grads refused to accept simple math. One cannot buy a $300,000 home while working at a minimum wage job and paying back college loans to boot.Even I am not that stupid.A lot of local foreclosures had lack of common sense written all over them.
ReplyDeleteadd Maynie's & Emmings
ReplyDeleteThe Connection closed too.
ReplyDeleteLocal politics coupled with MD politics coupled with the Obamanation of the economy is killing us. At this rate how long is it going to take for da 'bury to become little Detroit? We need some strong conservative leadership in our local government to reverse this trend NOW!!
ReplyDeleteRugged, by Target before 5 Below. Sally Beauty in Fruitland
ReplyDelete10:25 - A lot of the people that were brought here by major employers here on the shore were provided inaccurate information on the cost of living and potential for growth here - in conjunction with their relocation! After leaving their old jobs/homes/friends and buying overpriced/overhyped properties here, they have their employers lay-off/shut-down/relocate - leaving them stuck here...they walk from their mortgages and the downward spiral gets worse.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate everyone of those posting additional business closures. SBYnews tries to update this information on a quarterly basis. I'm going to note on our business closure list those businesses that we have missed and will try and perform this function on a bi-monthly.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for all those who have posted.
Jiminy Crickets! For heavens sake where did you get this list. This is the first time I have ever seen this. Now I know why crime is so high and EBT cards are being doled out like cotton candy. Anyone in their right mind can see what has happened. Our economy has completely disintegrated!
ReplyDeleteI don't think our current administration has a clue.
ReplyDeleteImploded actually
ReplyDelete10:09 I'm with you! But, no politicians!!!
ReplyDeleteI think SBY news did a great job posting what you all did, I added a few that I didn't see and am pretty sure some other people can think of some that I didn't. There are so many I don't think one person can think of all of them on the spot. The city and county should already know ALL OF THEM, them because they no longer have a license to do business!
ReplyDeleteTo 4:41 - Posting that says the City and County should already know ALL OF THEM because they no longer have a business license.
ReplyDeleteYou are so on point. They know that if they published a list like this that their asses would be toast. No on in their right mind would support a candidate that witnessed such a financial catastrophe. I agree, there is going to be hell to pay very soon. I hope that Sbynews keeps publishing this info right up until the election.
And to think that O'Malley claims that everything is hunky dory. Maybe for him with his 180,000 salary and Govs. mansion. He is also a disgrace in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteFormer employee of numbers 3 and 21 when they closed.
ReplyDeleteWhile scanning the list it certainly gets ones attention, that is for sure.
ReplyDeleteSome of those listed were mega giant manufacturers. Such notables as Dresser, Crown, Campbell's, Airpax. What a shame to see this happening right here at home. I firmly believe that America is on the decline and our leaders have helped to pillage our citizens.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Escape, which was where Roadie Joes is now. And Flavors of Italy, which now is home to Mojos. And what was the deli across the street? That closed too right?
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't count places where there are now thriving businesses. Mojo's and roadie joes are doing well. Maybe they can run a business better in the same location
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me to read through these comments. Everyone puts the blame on someone else.
ReplyDeleteIt is the natural course of business for things to come and go, to grow, shrink or even die. Every business has a life cycle and is subject to both internal (controllable) and external circumstances. That said:
PLEASE stop waiting for someone else to fix everything.
Look in the mirror and ask yourself how you can be part of the solution.
10:22, Spoken like a trued and dedicated LIBERAL.
ReplyDeleteIncredible how when confronted with facts, excuses like yours come flying out.
Here's what I would say about our "local economy". I'll even stay away from national.
YOU continue to elect people with absolutely NO BUSINESS EXPERIENCE. The ONLY way out is to continue tax increases, instead of finding ways to be proactive.
Look at Jake Day, Jim Ireton and Rick Pollitt right now. All of a sudden they are reducing fees and even giving away subsidies AFTER they are finally realizing, hey, we're in a depression. DUH!
This should have been done YEARS ago. I proposed traveling all over the state to encourage businesses and industry to relocate to the Eastern Shore. Guess what, these idiots are still sitting back waiting for businesses to fall into their laps.
I could go on and on but you've heard my speech a million times. Stop electing nice guys. Break the party lines and make the proper changes necessary to now SURVIVE, because that's all we have left at this point.
You can't open a few downtown restaurants and believe we are on the road to success.
It's time to prove you either care about Wicomico County by electing new leadership or it's time to pack your bags and move. It really is that simple. Remember, if you chose to pack up and leave, it's still a victory because in the end you'll be leaving all the crap behind for those Idiots who believed Rick Pollitt and Jim Ireton could actually fix their County.
Know that I have already been laughing ever since I sold my Salisbury property. They can have what's left.
Joe
ReplyDeleteI don't see a 10:22 comment. Not sure who you are attacking.
I, however wrote 10:33 and am the polar opposite of a liberal.
My sense is that You seem to have sour grapes about not being elected and are therefore committed to slandering all of the elected officials. I will leave it at that.
Liberals believe that it is the governments responsibility to solve everything
ReplyDelete10:33, Oh, I was speaking to you but my apology for typing in the wrong time.
ReplyDeleteSLANDERING?????
BITTER???
I said from day one, "It's YOUR election to lose" and I meant it. Bitter, come on now, seriously? I continue to do what I enjoy doing.
I think what YOU are missing is the fact that the MAJORITY of citizens within the City of Salisbury are BITTER because they know the electronic ballots were tampered with and the person who should be their Mayor is not.
For me personally, oh, life is so tough on me, NOT. I can't show my face in public, NOT.
I not only moved away from my Family for a YEAR, I would have had to remain living away from then for at least an additional 2.5 years. Yeah, I'm bitter, NOT.
Jim continues to prove my entire platform as being exactly on the right track because he refuses to follow my lead and just look around. For Sale, For Lease, businesses closing left and right. You can blame it on all sorts of things but you THINK for once in your life, it wasn't about a CAMPAIGN, FOOL. I have been telling you this crap was coming for YEARS and an ELECTION has NOTHING to do with MY predicting what was coming vs. how Pollitt and Ireton have screwed YOU into the ground.
It was Salisbury News who said more than a YEAR ago the County would be $3.5 MILLION SHORT in income tax revenue.
BY ALL MEANS, you come back here and tell each and every one of us how Salisbury News or Joe Albero has been WRONG.
You want to IMPLY I am bitter about the election, no, you are very mistaken. I am very pleased about the outcome because it continues to PROVE that everything we have been saying is 100% accurate. I was simply the one person with enough stones to stand up and run for Mayor. I needed a platform to EXPOSE and the BS and what could be done to make things right.
Now Mr. LIBERAL, do tell ALL of us what Jim Ireton and Rick Pollitt have done right. We'll be waiting.
Hi it's 1033 again.
ReplyDeleteTo be clear, I do respect that you backed up your beliefs by running for mayor. That is to be commended.
But how many foreign owned convenience stores have closed in the past 10 years ? Something doesn't add up there. Joe, I think you should do an investigative piece on that trade class.
ReplyDeleteThis is the worse economy I have ever witnessed and I have lived here in Salisbury for 62 years. Hookers, Drug Dealers, Robbers, Flim Flam scammers everywhere. It all started right after the exodus of key industries.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt the economy is bad. And the list shows that there are more than 100 fatalities to prove it. So where is the job generation, I'll tell you, it's the con artist, pick pockets, hookers, drug dealers, and pilfers. That is Salisbury's job base.
ReplyDeleteAnd nobody around here really wants to work like I did from the age of 16 to present. Dishwasher, retail cashier at Camelot Music, Tuerkes & Beckers, Tony Tank Inn dishwasher, Lifeguard at Leonard Mill and Schumaker Ponds, etc, etc... Been here since '67 and I've never seen it so bad. It's a crying shame !!
ReplyDeleteJoe, you said the only way Pollitt could win a race was to cheat. Do you have evidence of this that we should be made aware of?
ReplyDeleteJust curious , do you know what county in MD. is the highest?
ReplyDeleteResponding to 8:30 Posting - I'll bet you that if it weren't for media's posting info like the one cited in this example that Pollitt's administration would attempt to try and alter these stats. But once he tries to skew the statistics, then SBYnews (free media) comes back and actually cites real live information - how could anyone refute them. Heck, everyone knows that Dresser was once on College Ave., and Crown was on Rt. 13 South, and
ReplyDeleteBayliner was on Naylor RD. etc.
I truly believe you are going to see an administrative change this time round. To many fatalities.
This is not going to keep our young people in the area. Kmart in Dover is closing. Don't be surprised if ours is next.
ReplyDeleteYou know how Detroit is nationally reknown for being the 'Decay of America'. In my honest opinion you can now pin Wicomico as topping that List.
ReplyDeleteJoe, I swear, I have never seen anything like this. A picture is worth a thousand words - this list says it all.
You need to add Hollywood Tans to this list. It used to be behind Target in the area of Outback Steakhouse. It went out of business in October or November and didn't tell anyone. I had an unlimited tanning package that I paid for till the end of December and they didn't let me know or give me a refund. Talk about being pissed.
ReplyDeleteSperry Van Ness has signs plastered all around Salisbury saying; AVAILABLE, FOR LEASE, SALE. You can go throughout Salisbury and see multitudes of vacant retail spaces. Eastern Shore Drive, RT.13 N, RT.13 S, Waverly Dr, Beaglin Parkway. Today I even saw a sign in front of Parkside advertising Free Rent. Beats anything I have ever witnessed and I've lived here over 60 years.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair and balanced, The list of closures you have here goes back pretty far and some of these 'closures' have become other businesses.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that there is no manufacturing base. Most all of the jobs are retail and/or Food Services. When manufacturing left, it left such an economic void that it practically ruined everything, real estate, salaries, schools, increased crime and poverty. What a terrible mess.
ReplyDeleteIs it really a 'terrible mess'? Or is it an opportunity?
ReplyDeleteIt's no different than many other small towns in America.
What can be different is how we respond to it. What we do.

ReplyDeleteI think on the whole we will all agree, there is definitely a problem particularly in Wicomico County. If we can't retain even 1 private sector industry, then this is a serious problem.
Here is an idea. Form a group of everyone on here complaining about the lack of manufacturing jobs and develop a business plan for a company. Pool your talents, business experience and assets together. Ask Joe to advise the group and provide contacts in the business community to assist in the start up. I'm not talking about a franchise/restaurant/retail store but rather a real business that will provide jobs to local workers. Who else but you the local people would know best what businesses would work and thrive.
ReplyDeleteNo business is going to relocate to the shore. Why would they? Hi taxes?, no progress, poorly run towns and counties, and the list goes on and on. You couldn't pay a good company to come to the shore. The local people on the shore are one of the problems as they just don't see past their noses. Its way to late for a quick fix and things will get a lot worse as time goes on.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Navtrak on northwood dr/naylor mill. They closed July 2012 with about 150 employees.

And there lies your answer. If at the Blackduck Refuge area we have banned all hunting in order to increase the numbers of Waterfoul, the same scenario applies to Businesses.
Now get off your dufts and patronize the businesses that still exist.Quit spending your every moment trying to think of more that have shut down already.See there, problem solved.
