State Of The City Address

Let me start out with this, something I didn't know until this morning. Did you know the Wicomico Regional Library has moved or is moving to the Tri County Council Building on Rt. 50? Well, (I'm told) it either has moved or is currently moving, yet I've not heard a word about it.

Last night the Mayor and Council President held their State of the City Address. They discussed the recent progress of the City and as I found it very unusual for Jim Ireton to invite Jake Day to join him, (never done before) one can only believe Jim NEEDS Jake Day to move his political agenda forward.

One of their main topics was the Downtown Parking Lots.

I have it by a very reliable inside source that you will NOT see a Council Majority Vote on the sale of those Parking Lots UNLESS they provide the same, (if not more) parking spaces currently there or it will NOT be sold. I have also been assured that the parking lot next to the Library will also NOT be sold if the new owners do not agree to make spaces available for Library visitors.

Now, if that does work out, I personally will support the sale of those Parking Lots. I, like you, do NOT want to see County Executive Rick Pollitt use the lack of parking spaces as a tool to build a new Library.

As for the rest of the State of the City Address, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah. Clap, clap, clap, bow. SHOW ME THE JOBS! I don't care who you are, until we see INDUSTRY/MANUFACTURING jobs come to Salisbury, THERE IS NO REVITALIZATION.

Back when I owned my manufacturing company I used to tell all my sales staff, IT ISN'T A SALE UNTIL I SEE THE PURCHASE ORDER. Well Mayor Jim Ireton, here's what I think of your progress.

  1. We need more jails in the city , we need more officers , we have plenty of ex-criminals leading the way to a successful city.

  3. Why provide a parking lot for the library? You just said it was moved or moving.

  5. It's the old Filtronic-Comtek complex. Which means no more walking to the library for lots of people.

  8. I stopped going there over a year ago when it started getting taken over by homeless people and homeless people sleeping on the couch. It was no longer a good place to go. I now get my books online through my kindle.

  9. Being on 50 will reduce the homeless problem at the library unless it is deemed discriminatory and a shuttle service is provided to them to ensure they can exercise their right to read.

  15. "It's the old Filtronic-Comtek complex"

...yet another example of a significant employer that no longer exists...and a building turned over to a government entitiy (probably off of the tax roll).

We have heard "jobs, jobs, jobs" from Mathias and Conway for many years and the only thing we get is more government, increased government spending, and heavy government regulations. Their policies and those they approve on behalf of the O'Malley administration have driven the shore downward. Wicomico is in a death spiral...

Clearly, we need to change the way we think...and several seats in the General Assembly.

  19. In all reality I have a hard time supporting a public library when most information can be found on the internet.

  20. 6:45 We heard the same thing from the Republican congress. What have they done?

  21. 5:16 is correct - The Eastern Shore Regional Library is moving their offices to the Tri-County building, Wicomico Public Library is not moving, nor are there any plans to move away from downtown. These are two completely unique and separate entities.

Eastern Shore Regional is one of three regional libraries that provide support to the public libraries throughout the state (the others are the Western and Southern Regional Libraries). When this system was established, the regional libraries were designated by the state to be with the largest library in the region, hence why Eastern Shore Regional is in Wicomico County.
Eastern Shore Regional Library provides delivery services to the libraries on the shore every day so requested items are delivered quickly, they support the libraries by providing training opportunities, a number of the online databases and resources and provide computer and network assistant for all the libraries on the shore. They also provide support for some larger programs such as summer reading. They are a vital resource for all the Eastern Shore libraries.

ESRL is in need space that better suited their operations and were able to find it out at the Tri-County building. They are not part of nor are they funded in any part through Wicomico Public Library. The regional libraries allow the public libraries to take advantage of economies of scale and the efficiency of shared resources. They are not really a public library but rather a support entity for the public libraries in Maryland. ESRL is a vital resource that allows public libraries the meet the information needs of the public.

Those wishing additional information should contact either Wicomico Public Library or the Eastern Shore Regional Library directly.

    Executive Director, Wicomico Public Library

  22. Let's be clear here. My original article on this matter specifically stated "regional library". I can't help it if locals can't READ, with all due respect.
