This call(2 calls) was interesting. Princess Anne and Pocomoke was dispatched for a house fire in Princess Anne. They requested the Allen Fire Department and The Fruitland Fire Department who sent several fire engines. Then they had Allen dispatched for a fire engine to stand by in Princess Anne. A fire officer for Allen knew they didn't have the manpower for another crew so he requested Central to dispatch Station 1. A few minutes went by and they dispatched Station 3 instead knowing that Station 3 Fruitland already had 2 fire engines at the fire. After a time went by they decided to go ahead and alert Station 1 Salisbury for a stand by crew for Princess Anne. Four minutes went by and they had to re-alert Station 1. Nothing out of the paid crew from Station 16. I guess they are too good to go stand by in Princess Anne, but it's funny they want to squirrel all the re-alerts in Salisbury. Central has to re-alert Station 1 a second time and still nothing from the paid crew at Station 16. Then 122(a fire officer from Station 1) says they have the call covered. A few minutes later Central calls 122 and says it's been 11 minutes and no response. At that point they dispatch the volunteers of Station 2. A few minutes later 22C, an acting paid officer from Station 16 comes on the air and says Station 16 has 2 crews and Engine 16 is responding to the Stand By in Princess Anne. After that a fire engine from Station 1 responds to Princess Anne and the paid crew on Engine 16 heads back to their recliners at Station 16. Take a look at the times. Fourteen minutes between dispatches between Station 1 and Station 2. Fourteen minutes and there are 2 paid fire engine crews and a paid assistant chief at Station 16 refusing to take the stand by call. It was also their intent to make the volunteers look bad for scratching on a dispatch. It's interesting how they are allowed to pick and choose their calls. Two paid fire engine crews in Salisbury sitting around in their luxury recliners at the tax payers expense. Two paid fire crews in Salisbury and the only real calls are ambulance calls. Shame on the Salisbury Fire Department, the City of Salisbury and their poor leadership.
I think you answered your own question. The dispatcher went down the chain of stations and the officer at station 1 stated the call was covered momentarily. At that point he assumes responsibility. Keep in mind this was a stand by call; A Non Emergency response.
ReplyDeleteOops. No fires for the paid firemen in Salisbury. Looks like it's all EMS calls again.
ReplyDeleteIf all those stations were failing to get out it probably a good idea to maintain a crew in the city.
ReplyDeleteWell, those recliners are really cushy... Who would want to get up and go to another town when sitting there? Gosh!
ReplyDeleteAll ambulance calls except one false fire alarm and a stand by. Still doesn't justify a 24 hour round the clock paid fire department. They do nothing to recruit volunteers because they don't want volunteers. They run them off. Invest more time and effort and resources in the EMS division.
ReplyDelete8:07 PM the city is maintaining 2 paid crews around the clock, but obviously they want to pick and choose their calls. SO------ Your theory wasn't working.

May not have been an emergency response as you put it, but it appears there was every bit of a 30 minute delay or more before a stand by crew got to the town. I wouldn't want to have been part of that responsibility if someone died in a house fire because of this major cluster f***.
You hose jockeys sure are a sensitive lot.
ReplyDeleteIt may have been listed as a non emergency response but as the SFD keeps saying. "If it was your house you would want firemen there in a hurry" That is what you all keep preaching to us as to why we need so many paid firemen. Now you are saying it's ok to wait so you can sit on your behinds
Anon 7:33 You sure have spent an inordinate amount of time dissecting a less than important scenario. In your haste to assign blame you have failed to realize the obvious. Where is your concern regarding the fact that Princess Anne turned out very few members for the call. Which by the way is their responsibility. Explain why your not concerned that Somerset County could not fulfill their mutual aid requirements and had to request assistance from Wicomico county. Why aren't you concerned that Allen could not provide assistance ? What are the factors which caused the dispatch center to alert 5 companies before a response was made ? Since I know the answers, I have one very important question for you. If you had all that time to analyze the every detail of the dispatch; how did you find time to respond ?
ReplyDeletePrincess Anne is a joke, Allen is a joke, 1-22 is a joke. You all would be complaining if the paid crew left the city to go on a stand by. Reality the second crew should be at one twenty four hours.

Obviously a paid fireman in Salisbury bashing all the volunteers he mentioned. he is either getting off his shift or getting ready to go on based on the time of his comment. They only joke is you my friend and we don't need you or the rest of them.

It's called a mutual aid agreement and all departments have signed the agreement so their responsibilities have been fulfilled. Allen did respond to assist so their jobs were done. You had two paid fire crews in house who should have responded immediately since you think the paid crew should be the first dispatched. You pick and choose your calls, but you can't have it both ways. First thing this morning the Mayor should have a meeting with your fire chief and someone's butt should be reamed out and some demotions should be made.

Exactly!!
7:33 AM should be a comment worthy of a post.
ReplyDeleteTwo paid fire crews on duty on a Saturday night is a joke. The tax payers are being raped. The fire chief is trying his best to run the volunteer firemen out of town and is nearly successful at it.
ReplyDeleteI agree 733 should be a separate story.
ReplyDeleteTwo 24 hour paid fire crews in Smallsbury is ridiculous and a waste of tax dollars. Rick Hoppes and Jim Ireton should be brought down for this waste of precious tax dollars. Especially allowing them to kick back every day on those cushy recliners.
ReplyDeleteRick Hoppes has the authority to run the fire department in any fashion he sees fit. He has a budget and a staff of volunteer and career personnel. As long as he doesn't overspend his budget and emergencies are handled he's good. The Mayor meets with him every week and he knows exactly what the numbers are. That's why they have a Mayor and Chiefs. They are the experts and know how to run their departments. All the post and complaining with your opinions doesn't factor one bit in how a department is run. You would get better results by watching a dog chase his tail. At least the dog gets tired and figures out when to stop.
ReplyDeleteIt took over 14 minutes before 1 of 2 fire crews decided to take the call to stand by at the Princess Anne Fire Department. Yes it was an emergency call and the officers in charge of the shift should be brought up on charges. They had 2 paid fire crews on duty and they both refused to take the call at the blessing of the paid assistant fire chief. Someone needs to be demoted.

He has literally overspent his budget many times. Thanks to Hoppes and Gordy the City of Salisbury is broke.
Did I read that correctly? Did Anon 6:34 PM say that the mayor, Rick Hoppes and the chiefs were "experts?" I think I just threw up in my mouth laughing so hard.
ReplyDeleteThat's right. You read correctly. Hoppes has the credentials and experience to be fire chief. With those credentials he would be an expert in the business of emergency services. What training or experience do you have to stack up against him ?
