This call(2 calls) was interesting. Princess Anne and Pocomoke was dispatched for a house fire in Princess Anne. They requested the Allen Fire Department and The Fruitland Fire Department who sent several fire engines. Then they had Allen dispatched for a fire engine to stand by in Princess Anne. A fire officer for Allen knew they didn't have the manpower for another crew so he requested Central to dispatch Station 1. A few minutes went by and they dispatched Station 3 instead knowing that Station 3 Fruitland already had 2 fire engines at the fire. After a time went by they decided to go ahead and alert Station 1 Salisbury for a stand by crew for Princess Anne. Four minutes went by and they had to re-alert Station 1. Nothing out of the paid crew from Station 16. I guess they are too good to go stand by in Princess Anne, but it's funny they want to squirrel all the re-alerts in Salisbury. Central has to re-alert Station 1 a second time and still nothing from the paid crew at Station 16. Then 122(a fire officer from Station 1) says they have the call covered. A few minutes later Central calls 122 and says it's been 11 minutes and no response. At that point they dispatch the volunteers of Station 2. A few minutes later 22C, an acting paid officer from Station 16 comes on the air and says Station 16 has 2 crews and Engine 16 is responding to the Stand By in Princess Anne. After that a fire engine from Station 1 responds to Princess Anne and the paid crew on Engine 16 heads back to their recliners at Station 16. Take a look at the times. Fourteen minutes between dispatches between Station 1 and Station 2. Fourteen minutes and there are 2 paid fire engine crews and a paid assistant chief at Station 16 refusing to take the stand by call. It was also their intent to make the volunteers look bad for scratching on a dispatch. It's interesting how they are allowed to pick and choose their calls. Two paid fire engine crews in Salisbury sitting around in their luxury recliners at the tax payers expense. Two paid fire crews in Salisbury and the only real calls are ambulance calls. Shame on the Salisbury Fire Department, the City of Salisbury and their poor leadership.

  1. Hay crybaby, the fire department was doing what central dispatch told them to do!

Your argument is with the dispatch center.

  2. Standard Operating procedure in any combination department in America. Crews that are paid by a jurisdiction to protect that jurisdiction are the last option to leave and protect another. There's more out there then the Salisbury FD. Now, if you'll excuse me, my floors are mopped and the trash is out. My paid crew and I are taking our engine, ladder, ambulance and chief's car out to Denny's for breakfast! Shift Chief is buying because he's making big OT money today!(oh, and that's about 2 million in apparatus for a breakfast run!)

  3. anonymous 9:31, What's not funny is the FACT that they had the Station 16 ladder truck, (you know, the really big one) at Giant the other day grocery shopping.

Not for nothing but it's bad enough they take the most expensive truck the City owns out for something like that. The other is, Giant has to be the most expensive grocery store in all of Salisbury.

There's a Save A Lot right across the street from Station 16. Do enlighten me... have you ever seen them shop there. Not me.

  4. Joe, do you really keep a watch on where the fire department goes shopping? I'm sure there are many organizations that you haven't seen shopping at Save A Lot, or anywhere else. Get real.

  5. anonymous 9:41, I get phone calls al the time from people telling me where these fire trucks are.

What you don't get is, people are truly fed up with firefighters running around with millions of dollars worth of equipment to make these runs when you have around 14 chase vehicles there.

Look, I have had numerous conversations with veterans there who explain all the different reasons why they use these vehicles and while I simply do not agree with them, it doesn't mean I dislike them. We learn to agree to disagree.

Until the Fire Department changes their ways about this matter I will continue to expose hard earned taxpayer money being blown in such a way.

Come here at midnight tomorrow and see what I have to say in my 12:00 AM Post. If you don't think people are paying attention, I suggest you give that article a good read because I can assure you, people are listening.

  6. The money spent in the store is not taxpayer money so where ever the men and women choose to spend their cash is a non-issue. You want to but substandard crap for you family to eat that's you business jerk!

  7. anonymous 9:47, "substandard" eh???

I think you make way too much money.

  8. Joe I'm guessing you have never visited the meat det. In save-a-lot it is truly substandard compared to any other store in Salisbury. Not saying what the FD is doing is right . I'm just stating a fact.

  9. anonymous 10:20, when I lived Downtown I shopped there on a regular basis. Funny, I never got sick.

  11. There are certain things that Giant has that they do not have at Save A Lot. Giant has a salad bar, a deli and subs and such back by the deli. That still does not justify them stealing fuel from the city to cart their behinds over there. Pack your meals before you go to work just like everyone else usually does.

  12. SAVE A LOT ? There is not a quality name brand item stocked on their shelves. You could probably rate the place as a government surplus food bank. I don't blame our firemen for not shopping there.

Exactly. Someone has tried to explain how the fire department but you just don't get it. You probably should check back with your so called friends. I doubt seriously you would find anyone who would give you the time of day now.

  16. On the issue Of Giant I can say that I beg to differ. Up until recently we were a very low income home and only shopped at Wal-Mart. My wife figured out the coupons at Giant and when their items go on special and found you save way more money at Giant.

Seriously I have not paid more than $2 per gallon in over 6 months with the gas points. My wife also with pride shows me her receipts from Giant which at best has showed $240 in food reduced to $120 by using Coupons and then also getting 500+ gas points in that one purchase which is then 50 cents off a gallon. By the time we need to fill up she has hit her max of $220 off per gallon.

Lol I tell her she needs to start a blog to show people how to use the system a Giant since she always saves so much. Over all better quality food and if you make an effort it is the cheapest place in town.

  17. Last time I checked a stand by is not a immediate emergency and station 1 was filling there engine at which it responded with three firefighters and two officers . The call was covered but they were waiting for some other man power at which there members were not gonna go a little faster for a non emergency call. Makes sense . 16 job is to protect the city and that's what they get paid to do. There is calls that needs the duty crew to leave the city but I'm sure you people that don't have a clue about the first thing of putting your life on line for somebody else would even care or say oh they are lies or oh we don't need them . Why don't you all research other stations and see how they work .

  18. You should ask Assistant Chief Kauffman what happened I'm sure he can give you a full report.

Are you trying to say that the paid men at Station 16 are only responsible to cover calls in the city? And you have nerve to say that the commenters on here don't have a "clue." Do you know that over half of the Salisbury Fire Departments fire district is in the County? You didn't know that did you. Now who doesn't have a clue. I have an idea lets let Salisbury firemen cover only the calls in the city and give up the county territory to the surrounding volunteer fire companies. They would love to pick up that extra territory. You are the one that doesn't have a clue. LMBO.

  20. Oh man! I got so tired working on all my Ebay items I have out for auction that my mid afternoon nap went long! Did I mention I work at your average combination fire department? You people are real hawks keeping an eye on SFD! Just think what you would complain about at my station! I made almost a hundred grand this year and only ran probably 10 fires! Do that math! I gotta run now though, need to hit the mall and make some returns before they close! Looks like I'm not the only late sleeper! The whole station is heading out. Sometimes you just need a McDonald's shake!

  21. Albero. Instead of worrying about how Salisbury firefighters are wasting your tax dollars take a minute and look at how princess Anne fire company is wasting your tax dollars. That may bring you to the reason Wicomico was so troubled with making a response. Take on a real Issue!

  23. Super Tick 8:07 PM you guys have the best job in the world. You get to kick back in your cushy recliners all day long for your 24 hour shift and then you get paid to sleep. After you wake up you get to go work another full time job while you are all rested up. Must be nice.

  24. HAHA! It is nice! But right now it isn't very good. See, my mid afternoon nap overlapped into my pre-dinner nap. Now I'm wide awake. Good thing I have my Ebay side business along with about 15 Craig's List items to keep me occupied. I'm sure most people might think I'm kidding, but everything I've said on here is 100% true and accurate! No place safer to meet ebay buyers then at a fire station! All I've had to do today was help put a few "sick" people onto cots, write down some info about bad labs at the nursing home and help a nice lady get some smoke out of her house when she burnt her microwave popcorn. Good day! And the best part is, my buddy and fellow combination FD employee, is a big Texas football fan, I told him to go out and enjoy the bowl game tonight and call out sick tomorrow! I can use the OT! HAHA! And you guys think you're going to change how a FD operates! Its like this everywhere. Remember- We fight what you fear!! And with my bonus overtime tomorrow, I'm going to make about $10,050 for every fire I've run this year!

  25. Poor leadership at its best. Mutual aid appears to be on the auction block. Sure hope this area never has a 911 disaster because as evidenced by this incident only the highest bidder will receive assistance. Sounds like some changes are needed NOW!
Keep up the good work Princess Anne and all of Somerset County FD's....We are proud of your service and dedication!!!!
