Remember when that crazy Russian professor said America would break up into several different nations?
He may not have been totally far off.
In a new article in Tufts Magazine, Colin Woodard, author of "American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America", argues that the U.S. has long been divided into several different cultural entities that, with only a couple of notable exceptions, have somehow been able to coexist alongside one another.
He writes:
"The original North American colonies were settled by people from distinct regions of the British Isles—and from France, the Netherlands, and Spain—each with its own religious, political, and ethnographic traits. For generations, these Euro-American cultures developed in isolation from one another, consolidating their cherished religious and political principles and fundamental values, and expanding across the eastern half of the continent in nearly exclusive settlement bands. Throughout the colonial period and the Early Republic, they saw themselves as competitors—for land, capital, and other settlers—and even as enemies, taking opposing sides in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. There’s never been an America, but rather several Americas—each a distinct nation. There are eleven nations today.
Here's how that all breaks down (thanks to Tufts magazine for permission to run the map):
We need to have one great big war and settle this once and for all.
ReplyDelete8:22,
ReplyDeleteYou sir (or madam), are an idiot.
Signed,
620,000 Americans that died the last time we tried your idea
Well, that's just fine. And now we have oBlama dividing us even more.
ReplyDeleteWhat say we just get this crap overwith now?
It's all those people in Yankeedom that's causing all the problems. What's the big deal if about 620,000 of them were to be eliminated?
ReplyDeleteExactly 9:32.Who will miss 620,000 troublemakers anyway, other than 8:33 of course.
ReplyDeleteWhile this particular scenario is a bit overwhelming, I do believe, strongly, that there is a need for drastic change within America.
ReplyDelete1983 anyone? Us vs Them? Divide and concur? The enemy unseen? This map may have been plausible 100 years ago but in the age of open transportation and the internet I highly doubt anyone is carrying on a boarder war with their neighbors because "they are different over there". The only enemy I see are politicians that want to spend all of our money funding wars we the people do not want.
ReplyDeleteSo THIS is what it feels like to be on top? #TidewaterProud
ReplyDeleteGet rid if Obama peeps.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with this map in a general way, it shows a lot of history as to what regions different cultures settled to. There's still the Amish regions, definitely the Louisiana French/ Canadian Cajuns, black and Chinese and Korean neighborhoods and regions. So, YES! Let them live there among themselves and enjoy America! I really don't want to change any of it. Do you want to live in Chinatown? I don't, but there are those that do! No reason for a civil war here.
ReplyDeleteBut, if you talk our present Administration? Well, maybe...
