Troopers Investigating A Fatal Crash Investigation West Of Georgetown

Location: Old Furnace Road east of Waller Road, Georgetown, DE

Date of Occurrence: Tuesday October 1, 2013 at approximately 9:43 a.m.

Resume: Georgetown, DE- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this morning involving a pick-up truck and a DART Para transit bus.

Preliminary information reveals the incident occurred around 9:43 a.m. as a Dodge pick-up truck was traveling westbound on Old Furnace Road just west of Waller Road. At the same time, a DART Para transit bus was traveling eastbound on Old Furnace Road, when for unknown reasons, the pick-up truck swerved into the eastbound lane striking the bus on the driver’s side. The impact forced the bus off the south side of the roadway and into a ditch where it overturned once before landing upright. The pick-up truck continued in an easterly direction and rotated in the roadway before coming to a stop. An Infinity passenger car was traveling eastbound behind the bus when in order to avoid the crash, swerved to the right and drove off the south side of the roadway and into a ditch before coming to a stop in a yard.

The male operator of the truck, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the bus and seven passengers were transported to local hospitals where the nature of the injuries ranged from severe to non-life threatening. Information on the identities of the passengers will be released pending notification of next of kin.

The female operator of the Infinity was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Old Furnace Road between Waller Road and Asbury Road were closed for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
