GOP Bill Would Ban Using Food Stamp Funds On Junk Food

Newly proposed legislation in Congress would ban recipients of food stamps from buying junk food.

The Hill reports that a bill proposed by Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., would require food stamp recipients to purchase only healthy food.

The Healthy Food Choices Act, H.R. 3073 is the latest salvo from Republican members of Congress who have criticized the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps or the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC).

In August, it was reported that House Republicans hoped to cut some $40 billon from future SNAP budgets.

Roe's legislation is specifically in response to a 2012 study, which showed that recipients from the food stamp fund spend approximately $2 billion a year on junk food.

  1. Wonder about the reasoning of those who vote against it. Hope they cut food stamps for families with school age children if the children are getting free breakfast, lunch and dinner at school. Why pay twice?

  2. I am on foodstamps because I got layed off and the abuse I see is rediculous I can buy candy and chips but not toilet paper how is candy a necessity I also think they should tax foodstamps also every little bit to help pay back.I plan on being off FS soon but there also is a bigger issue and that is families staying on assistance for GENERATIONS.

  4. Well if Michelle Obama were truly concerned about childhood obesity she would be right on this!
Will never happen though. She as well as her husband have their heads shoved so far up the butts of the big businesses that sell these junk foods that she wouldn't dare. These companies are the same ones who lobbied for the food entitlement expansions. Walmart also.

  11. I understand you can get cash back with good stamps. If this is true, then you can buy what you want with the cash back. Anyone know?

  12. All these arguments are useless as long as they can get "cash back" when they use their cards. And I said "cards"-plural-many people have several cards to use...

  13. If it is a women and children program why do I see so many young men using them???

  14. If they could only buy healthy food, maybe that would cut down on the diabetes and heart problems. Then we wouldn't also have to pay for their medical assistance to cover those issues.

  15. A young man (probably early 20's) came up to me in the grocery section of Wal-Mart when I was shopping one day...asked if I wanted to buy his food stamps for 50 cents on the dollar to "help" him out...I told him I work for a living and for him to go get a job--he looked at me like I had lost my mind...I found a store manager, they said they have trouble like this a lot, but the guy had taken off.

  16. Better idea ban food stamps!

  17. Same thing happened to me 11:46 just this summer. It was a different store and a woman. I went to the manager and they had her banned from the store.

  18. My parents and grandparents knew how to stretch their food dollars (consequently, so do I). Nowadays a hot meal is a microwave burrito or a rotisserie chicken.

  21. Good. But, once it's spent, it's spent. You can't be & shouldn't be awarded more because you weren't wise in spending.

  22. 10:37 Now, THAT would start a revolution!

People are getting lazier by the day, each day they receive/take with no payback asked for. Sorry is a good word to describe the working class nowadays.

  23. Food stamps are out of hand. I see people using them in Seafood Stores buying a bushel of crabs. You see them in Foodlion using food stamps, then walk out and drive away in an Escalade. Make them get Drug Test, or teach them to grow their own food. Then they have a job by selling some of their crop and feed themselves.

  24. Quit your whining. Seafood is a FOOD, it's even in the name for you knuckleheads.

You want people to eat peanut butter so you can feel superior?

  25. All of you people sound stupid as hell, first there are more white people on stamps than any other race. Secondly, I see more men than women receiving stamps and then you have the people who sit at home all day smoking and drinking enjoying living off the government. Cut those mfs, single mothers who work need the extra help so hurt them by cutting what they need to fees their children?

  26. 3:28
You are the one that sounds stupid. There are MORE white people in the USA than any other race. If you do it by percentage you will see that that whites are not the top percent on welfare. If single mothers need to feed their children maybe they should go to the father to help feed them. How and why is it my responsibility to feed a child that I did not have. People need to learn how to be accountable and responsible for their own actions. I shouldn't have to pay for their being stupid. So next time before you use your Obama phone to type such a stupid response maybe you should look up the facts!
