Berlin Fire Funding Partially Restored By Council; Reduced Funding Means Tough Decisions Ahead, BFC Officials Report

BERLIN — A little more than a year after cutting all financial support to the Berlin Fire Company (BFC), the Mayor and Council voted unanimously Monday to restore $200,000 out of the $537,000 that was withdrawn.

There doesn’t appear to be a clear winner in the dispute at this time, with the BFC vocal about its fear that lower funding could impact service, the town still upset over the soured relationship and legal actions from disgruntled BFC employees brewing.

Though it’s a rough start, Mayor Gee Williams said that Monday’s decision to return partial funding to the BFC should be seen as a positive step forward.

  2. i say let your house burn down... By the time you clean out eh water and smoke damages, you mind as well start fresh...

Plus, why can't people use their own water to help control/put out the fires... if no people or animals are in the house who cares... its just stuff, you will have to replace anyway so the value is gone, sentimentally that is...

Soon it will be where you have to pay a fee for the service even though that is what your taxes are for... and if you don't pay, they will let it burn anyway... just like in some states up north...

Like cops they do not have a law that says they have to help or put out the fire... so why are we paying these dumb asses for anyway? and why give them money they will waste like SBY did, buying a 900k fire boat that has been used twice since being bought and one was for training...

This is how stupid you all are, the govt is telling these people to spend all the money in the coffers as fast as they can on anything just to get it gone, so there is a illusion of no money...

They won't stop spending so this will never end, unless we make them or they take all our money... at this rate you all would let them too...

  4. Well again Kim sister up at town hall acting like she is involved in BFC. Did all that hollering while Jeff dean was speaking. Mayor you should have had her removed. Again the BFC was bulling and you did not stop them. I am thinking is there away not to pay town taxes. Why and I say why did we give these criminals funding. They say they did not threaten the citizens of berlin to not provide service. What do you call that letter they sent to the mayor a threat. Fitzgerald get some new material, sick of hearing you gone on and on about nothing. Wives of BFC just as bad as their men. Oh and where was bryon ! Mommy and daddy was there so he did not need to show up. What a weak person. You started this bryon.

  5. I actually know fire victims who lost everything and also someone who lost everything in a hurricane. These people do not know each other but many years ago both told me something similar. After the initial shock wore off they actually felt a kind of relief. As if being free of all the stuff they had collected.
I hadn't thought much about this until this month's Reader's Digest has a similar story.
I think for a lot of people when they are hit with devastation like losing everything they really have a new perspective and things don't mean as much as they did any longer.

  6. Burln Volitear Far Cumpknee.

What a bunch of losers and shame on the Mayor and Council for caving into their threats. Thinking if they gave them a little bit they won't be mad and not giving all to them the tax payers won't be mad. Weak politicians buying votes with your money.

  7. What BFC does not want you to know when Fitzgerald stands up and say the volunteers are the only thing that is free any more is not true. They get paid $10 each time they take an ambulance call. That is because none of them do anything for free. Camera system $70,000 twel that is because they steal the place blind the members that is. Whole computer systems brand new stolen. Respect well they have shown that they do not have that. In order to get those guys to do anything come to a meeting they have to feed them. How about the election dinner they throw for themselves folks they eat steaks others dream of eating and can not afford. When the public is not looking they are feasting. If they need money so badly why did they not fund raise this summer. Why because that is the time they like to play. Now they are going to cook a breakfast here and there. Well that is not showing much effort to keep your company running. None of them want to do anything but stand around and eat.

  8. Seems like Pittsville is looking into the time that corrupt David Fitzgerald was on the Council there...everywhere he goes there is problems, why did he get fired as EMS Director of Worcester County...and then gets hired at Wicomico County as Director of the Humane Society??? Wait til the boys find out he was not truthful with them! It will all come out in Court. MIEMMS will have a problem also when the facts of the matter come out in Court in regard to the accident on Rt 50 that certified EMT's and Paramedics refused to render aid to a patient.
