Red Light District Update

Mayor James Ireton, Jr. informs the public that B & Z Investments, owners of Red Light District, have been non-compliant for 12 days.

On August 12, 2013, City officials asked that B & Z Investments provide them with documentation detailing stock, a floor plan and accounting information so that it may be determined if Red Light District is, or is not, considered an Adult Retail Store.

The owners have provided none of the requested information and have been fined daily since August 12, 2013. Attached is the latest letter to B & Z Investments. Again, the City is requesting the detailed information.

  2. Why should ANY retail business provide such materials to the Government?
    This is just harassment.

  3. Our city is certainly a "mess" at best. It's such a shame to have this sleezy store with it's huge sign on a main route...

  4. You all are a bunch of hypocrites. If the city did nothing, you'd be crying about that too. I remember when the adult store opened on Rt 13 near Rt 50, you all cried how it was ruining our city... How could the City allow it? Do you change your mind based on the day, or do you just automatically oppose whatever the mayor is doing?

  5. It's called zoning and yes you have to prove that you comply. It is not criminal so guilty and innocence have 0 to do with it.

  6. Look at their website and the products they promote. Its an adult novelty store unless they can prove otherwise. They have the burden of proof.

There are families residences, and at least 4 churches within 1,000 feet of this place. I say fine em and shut them down.

  7. These people are hardened criminals and this town is doing the right thing to slow down their entry into our community. They owners will stop at NOTHING to get their way.
To 11:03 ALL stores have to produce this information for the priviledge of operating a legal store.

This community is attempting to protect us and and enforce a law that everyone has to comply with. To 10:56 what is wrong with that, protecting OTHER peoples rights. Yes that is what this country is coming to and I am proud of that and what this town is doing to prevent these really bad people from comuing into our town. I cannot publish my name because they WILL come after you

  9. We need picketers in front of their store . Get them out of this town, fast. They will spread.

  10. There are residences across the street from the one on 13 by rt. 50. So how come they can be there but the Red Light store cannot be where it is?

families residences and churches and they all commit crime and have sex. It's not like this store is being put in Nithsdale.

As a matter of fact the last time I checked there were no family residences anywhere close. As a matter of fact the houses several blocks behind them aren't really families, they are rentals that have no real family living in them. There is no baby daddy and sometimes no mommy. Just thugs and poor grandmothers that chose to take care of someones illegitimate children.

This law and many other zoning and code enforcement laws have never been enforced. Quit lying Jim or Chuck.

I have a strong feeling this author isn't even a city tax payer.

The only hardened criminals are the ones that live in the Church Street area behind this location.

  15. 1:25-In the case of these kinds of stores yes they do have to prove they comply. It's something to do with it being an adult store as opposed to just a lingerie shop. A lingerie shop has less restrictions.

You did not probalbly have a change of use. You did not have a sign permit. When did you start your business? Try to start one now and move to a new location. You really do not know what you are talking about so don't call me a lier

  18. 12:12 - if they're going to spread it's going to be because of demand. If people aren't buying what they are selling they aren't staying.

  19. What are the businesses in the ES Adkins building? Aren't some of them where children attend? I say please Mr. Mayor don't stop on this one. We don't need a place like this in our city.

  20. I run a business in Salisbury and have NEVER been asked to prove anything about what I sell or how much of what.

These folks are being discriminated against from Day One.

Show past precedence, and maybe I'll believe the fines are fair.

Did the Hot Dog Cart downtown have to "prove" that some percentage of their product was a certain item? I think not...

  21. 7:42-They aren't being discriminated against. Salisbury's had law governing these types of businesses well before this particular one came on the scene. One thing is, if it's considered an adult store it is more regulated than a store that is just selling sexy clothing.
The owner choose to open a business that has more regulations attached to it than some other businesses. He's got to follow the rules just like everyone else.

  22. In the list of bigger fish to fry, how many days have the OLD MALL owners been non-compliant?

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's plain & simple. This is free speech as guaranteed by our constitution. Taking this to court will cost the tax[payers a ton of money. I don't like it either but I like our constitution a whole lot more. This wording is a whole lot less offensive than the adult store's wording for all to see on Church St. & Rt. 13.

  24. If Ireton and his staff would take other property/zoning misuse as seriously, for instance over-occupancy of single-family homes and selling alcohol without a license (at big text message parties), our neighborhoods would be stronger and our city would be stabilizing.

What said it was a sex store?

  26. The bottom line here is that Salisbury rarely ever charges outrageous fines and rarely ever enforces the codes on the books. I say to these owners "Stand your ground."

    ReplyDelete
  27. 11:21-I think that is the city's point. It's a sex store that derives a certain percentage of it's gross from novelty items related to the sex trade as opposed to clothing items. "Sex stores" are zoned differently-a distance away from residential and churches for example. It's not just Salisbury. I guarantee Salisbury's code is written exactly like 1000's of other throughout the country which incidentally have been challenged numerous times within the courts and have been found to be constitutional.
