Readying For College Or Career Through 'Common Core'

As students in Maryland public schools go back to the classroom this week and next they will likely notice some changes to the curriculum. That is a result of the Common Core Standards being implemented this year in Maryland.

State school officials say dozens of states across the country are implementing Common Core Standards in reading, language arts and math. It involves critical thinking and problem solving according to the State School Superintendent Lillian Lowery. She says it is about preparing students to graduate and for college and careers.

Dr. Lowery tells WBAL Radio that school officials found that some students were graduating with pretty good grades but were having to take remedial classes in college. She says the Common Core Standards were designed to help change that in the future.

  3. Must be why at least 9 states are passing legislation to drop Common Core. 'Course if it's good enough for The Won, it's good enough for MOM.

Common Core is a liberal socialist propaganda. Several states tried it and are getting rid of it. And We the People in Maryland need to step up and reject this crap. It does nothing to improve students scores. It teaches how to be dependant on Government and Welfare. After all, we are from the Government and we know what's best for you.

  5. A typical result of "no child left behind." Just pass them to get rid of them.

  6. You people just shut the heck up! Some of us plan on making big bucks off of CC.
That's what it's all about. Fooling the peons into thinking it's for them so we can make money.
Hint-buy Pearson Education, Apple computer and McGraw Hill (textbooks) stock. Governments both local and federal are spending billions with these companies for CC.

  8. We had to get out of NCLB because certain groups of students were doing so poorly. We had no way of getting a high enough pass rate even though millions of dollars had been spent trying to meet the goals. Every decision is made to benefit those who don't work and don't behave.

  9. 4:53's right. DC is nothing more than a 'sewing circle' that comes up with ways to get themselves and their friends rich. No doubt lobbyist hired by the companies mentioned and others who will benefit came up with Common Core and 'presented' their ideas to the US Dept of ED. You can also bet then some officials of that department have spouses and other family who are in upper management of these companies. Or they want jobs for their kids in these companies so they push to get them government contracts. It's all tit for tat Inside the Beltway.
Of course omalley goes along with anything out of DC because he is such a wannabe. To them he is nothing more than a useful idiot.

  10. Sooo, will they be able to read cursive now with this?

    I doubt it.

College prep... why is there even any such thing as "remedial College Courses" n the first place? Either you qualify to get in or you don't get in.

  13. Go back to teaching the subjects linearly so they build year after year, require kids to learn multiplication tables, how to group tens in columns, and other useful methods of doing math. Grammar, spelling, history, science should be taught the same way.
