OCEAN CITY – Many municipalities across the country have been taking advantage of the government’s program that provides surplus military equipment free of charge, and Ocean City is looking into acquiring military vehicles to operate emergency rescues during inclement weather.
During a Police Commission meeting Monday morning, Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) Captain Gregory Guiton presented the opportunity to acquire military Humvees.
“It’s free but we all know that free is never free, there is always associated costs,” Guiton said, explaining the costs will begin with transporting the vehicle to Ocean City and whatever work to be done to the vehicle afterwards, such as paint and equipment.

Really? Humvee? Another moronic idea who's bill will be footed by the the taxpayers.
ReplyDeletenow that you mention it why does the town of Del Mar need a home V duece and a half plus other vehicles. oh make that times two... the town of Delmar has its own little army ready to go. they were even given 50 Cal to mount on their hummers
ReplyDeleteProbably that dumbcrap, double dipping Emergency Services Director, Theobald. Maybe it'll match the 2 million dollar "emergency services" motorhome.
ReplyDeleteMake all the people go back a crossed the bridge shut the city down and block the bridges during major storms. It was stupid that people had to have the national guard rescue them during a major flooding event!!!
ReplyDeleteBut then again that's what you get when you live below sea level!!!
OCPD will do exactly what I witnessed Delmar police do with their recent surplus vehicle acquisition. They drove it from across the bay with a Delmar police car escorting it. NO TAGS. NO PERMIT.
ReplyDeleteILLEGALLY. Speeding no less.
They do not need MILITARY vehicles.
OCPD is already drunk on their power and proud of it.
police pay taxes too.
ReplyDeleteAs much as an unemployed dope dealer does. Lmao. I'm not sure wich is dumber the comment or the commenter!
DeleteSounds like drunk power to me.
ReplyDelete1) not needed, there are other veh's that do this
2) Rehab and FANCY paint job$
3) New maint. cost
4) It's not broken, so don't fix it
True, Delmar has an Army now. Just ride by the police station next to the railroad and take a look. I expect to see a tank there soon.
ReplyDeleteI just read where one of the first Stealth fighter planes are being retired. It will be interesting to see which "public safety" organizations tries to get it first.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to justify this vehicle since yesterday. Just can't come up with a good reason , free is not a good reason.
ReplyDeleteWhat will they do with it?
Profiling is the only answer I can come up with , look what we got.
Maybe Salisbury can trade the "free" $1 million fire boat to OC & take the HumVee. It has to be cheaper to operate & maintain, & OC is actually on the water with many more businesses & homes to protect along the waterway. Get Ocean Pines to chip in & it should be a no-brainer, but that's what we have in gov't, people with no brains.
ReplyDeleteThe Humvee would look real macho in the Firemen's parade leading their command and control motorhome (aka known as the former police chief's Chariot).
ReplyDeleteThe property was already paid for by YOUR federal taxes. The property is offered to LE on a free basis. Most of the property again is used and no longer needed by DOD. Yes most property needs some sort of rehab based on its condition, hence it’s used. So you get a $35k vehicle for free and like with any equipment “purchased” for LE, Fire, or PW it has to be maintained to be used. See more and educate yourselves by searching 1033 program. FDs have similar program through the Forestry service. Bottom line it’s already been purchased by YOU and now WE get some use out of it.
ReplyDeleteeducate this United States Army pays 35 dollars for a broom. $280 for simple coffee pot. these vehicles you cannot just go to Napa to get the parts for the work on one. these parts are military grade parts that will still be paid for like the government pays for them outrageous prices. and $35,000 vehicle get real body that's what you drive back and forth to work daily. it is cheaper to go out and buy a brand new Hummer and maintain one that needs to be grabbin old military one and maintain one. the specs are slightly different making a military grade vehicle.

You are obviously intimately involved in this request and like most government employees locally you try to deceive the tax payers into thinking they are getting their moneys worth by lies.
This vehicle is not a $35,000 vehicle. Most of these vehicles are completely worn out and not worth the investment. Please go ahead and retire early so that we can save tax dollars on brain dead government employees who slop at the government teat.
Prove it. Give us data supporting your guess that these vehicles are "worn out".
DeleteThe fact is the federal government has extra things and local governments can ask to receive this equipment. It beats pushing them into the sea - most of us have probably seen footage from Vietnam showing helicopters being tossed this way.
The only real argument against this is that the federal government spends too much money on equipment. That I will agree with, but blaming municipalities for receiving the equipment is a little too late. The money is spent, the barn door is open, etc...
I am glad you didn't delete my entire post.

The town of Ocean City already has many ORV's and 4x4's so what is so special about a Humvee? The fire department at one time had a 4 wheel drive ambulance so what happened to that?
ReplyDelete5:59: You miss the point. Whether this equipment is worn out of not, WHY do you NEED a HumVee?!?!?!?
ReplyDeleteTHE current Transportation Department has 2 BRAND NEW (4X4) SUVS that they got for FREE. If EMS needs them, take them from Transportation.
You OC EMS/FD people are SO hung up on masculinity, it can't be helped. Please do the job you are paid to do (remember you now getting Union backed perks) and SHUT UP. The tax payers are growing tired of you WHINING!
Delmar sent theirs to Crisfield to help during hurricane Sandy. The people they helped are sure glad their department has more foresight than you.

Prove that they are not worn out! Go to every firehouse that has some of these junk surplus vehicles. Go to the Somerset County Sheriff's Office and look at that piece of crap vehicle that they are forcing Troy Durham to drive. It is worn out! Now prove to us that surplus vehicles are not worn out!
You are the one making an assumption and attempting to use it in a debate. Obviously, you have no proof to back up your inane puffery.
DeleteThe militarization of the police continues unabated. And WHO is so stupid that they think the vehicle is "free" or just because federal taxes (our money) helped buy it, it won't cost MORE local tax money to maintain it, insure it, and make it look really menacing? Sometimes, I think SHEEP really are smarter than some of you....
ReplyDelete559-Do you know the maintenance costs of a HumVee? It's nowhere near cheap. These beasts have immense maintenance costs, these vehicles will not be fixed at a not for profit shop either. I've known guys who've dumped tens of thousands in maintenance costs into these vehicles, over the course of just a few years.
ReplyDeleteAsk anyone who has bought a vehicle from a military surplus sale. They're usually best used as scrap, it's either that or money pit projects guys end up regretting.

You obviously don't know how to debate because you are just making comments with now connections at all?

And what did it do that no other vehicle could do? This is just a feel good comment you made.
It was the only vehicle that could get into certain areas. The difference in our points is that I have taken the time to get the whole story, but you are ok with discussing issues based on hunches. Get off your butt and learn something. Stop being apathetic. Become an informed citizen.
DeleteMaintaining Anything is the problem . Gov. builds it or buy it with our money & have no thought for the future when things have to be replaced or maintained!---But why should they worry---it's not their money that's doing it.
