Mr. Greg Bassett was let go today from the local Daily Times Newspaper, this has been confirmed by Salisbury News.
With daily circulation numbers plummeting downward in recent years, Gannett has been trying just about anything and everything to hold on, nothing is working.
Salisbury News numbers have risen around 50% ever since the first of the year. While we have always enjoyed incredible daily traffic, we wondered why things had really taken off once again.
We came to the conclusion that most are not willing to pay for their on line articles and quite frankly we also believe people simply gave up on the Daily Times at the end of the year.
I am told they are currently trying to replace Mr. Bassett. We wish him the very best in the future.
They knew the had to find someone that will be able to get along with the NEW MAYOR!
ReplyDeleteI tried to warn Basset right here on Sby News that injecting his own agenda into the DT's was only going to get him his walking papers but he continued to ignore my warnings.
ReplyDeleteI hear he left to be NEW CHAMBER director?
ReplyDeletei am not paying and still get it. All you have to do is clear your cookies and or reset your router. For a tablet or phone power it off and back on. BAM. ITS FREE!
ReplyDeleteanonymous 8:18, Greg Bassett did not leave.
ReplyDeletelol How is that for a reality check?
ReplyDeleteDeflate your ego just a little bit?
I don't want to kick a man while he is down but, I think you deserve a little nudge.
To late.
ReplyDeleteGreg is a dedicated journalist and a nice guy. He's going to be missed. It is a loss for the region.
ReplyDeleteyeah right!!!
DeleteGive yourself a pat on the back. You have certainly given 100 plus percent to make this happen.
ReplyDeleteSBY killed the Daily Times
ReplyDeleteWhen things get bad in business, you always cut off the head of the snake. Just like politics.
ReplyDeleteBest to Greg Bassett in the future. He did the best he could with the cards he was dealt. It will be hard to find a new executive editor with his depth of information about the area. This is a step back, not a step forward.
ReplyDeleteI second what 8:26 just said.
ReplyDeleteIt is a loss for the region. Absolutely.
Bet Jimbo is crappin' fruit loops in his diaper about now he's probably drunk, right beside Bassett.
ReplyDeleteOne of Bassett's last actions was to put Pat Peterson on the editorial board, that's reason enough to get canned.
ReplyDeleteJoe Albero took an idea, a new concept and went up against a Gannett corporation and brought them to their knees. He fought local corruption and exposed things the local media would not cover. I have watched many people disappear over the past several years and Greg Bassett is yet another one.
ReplyDeleteWatching WBOC get exposed the past few days for rejecting positive comments about Joe will prove to be their ultimate demise as well. I can't help but chuckle knowing these news organizations chose to support crooked elected officials and now look where they are at. Karma has a way of flushing the toilet every time.
I don't know the man personally, but I don't know how anyone can call what he did or what that paper did "journalism." Everything he ever accused Joe of his newspaper did in spades. The Daily TImes reporter that's gone now had a secret meeting with Ireton and Mitchell at the Chamber with all the power brokers Salisbury is sick of. They've smeared a lot of good people over the years.
ReplyDeleteI don't wish anybody ill, but I sure cannot be of the opinion that a good job was done or that it's a good newspaper. I think they've done a lot of harm to the old Berry. Just my thoughts.
Liarton and Mitchell, what a pair! That reporter, Sarah Lake was also interviewed for a top seated job at the City. She wants Jessie Cocci's job or did Liarton offer it to her? Someone has to write his press releases for him.
DeleteIt's true, the same people you walk on and step all over to get to the top, you see again, on your way back down.
ReplyDeleteI hate to hear of anyone losing their job these days.
ReplyDeleteHis wife left him and now he's lost his job.
ReplyDeleteTheir loss. I'd like to see them try to replace his history and rapport with the community. He's a native of the region. He added a valuable and nostalgic view of the Eastern Shore, a lot of which was firsthand knowledge. They'll wish they had him back.
ReplyDeleteIt's narrow minded to think he can't be replaced by someone from right here in Salisbury. His dismissal doesn't mean that the new editor will be from out of area. I'm sure there are locals that will qualify for that position and have roots and contacts.
ReplyDelete9:15pm I do not agree with you. He trashed so many people -- people who care about this area and who are natives, too, of this area. He thought he had the power to do so -- just like that Eric Sahler guy. Susan Parker will be next. They were nasty to good people throughout the years.
ReplyDelete9:22, I was going to say the same thing. Remember when Debbie Campbell got some award and shortly after they printed some ridiculous rumer from "an unnamed source" on the front page that could have got her fired?
ReplyDeleteFortunately Campbell has such a great reputation I'm sure her employers thought the newspaper was insane.
They'd have been right. There were others too and they would print any malicius thing Barrie Tilghman said about anybody. The list just went on. Oh and what they did to the Rachel Polk, yeah, that was real bad too. Remember that restaurant owner they made front page news? Lots of hoity toities got in trouble and they never were on front page.
I stopped getting the paper. I didn't write to it. I stopped reading it.
The End
Be careful what you wish for. If for some reason Joe Albero decides to shut down his Blog Site I wonder where the news will come from. Yes the Daily Times has been in decline for some time but like other businesses new faces can bring about a resurrection. Don't get me wrong I think that this site is a great addition to this area and is my main source for news as well as many other goings on. There is room for more than one source and I hope the right management comes along to make it once again a viable news paper. Good luck to Mr. Bassett as these are difficult times and losing a job is not a happy time for anyone.
ReplyDeleteI guarantee that he will be replaced by someone outside the "region." If you think the next executive editor of The Daily Times will be from Salisbury or the Eastern Shore of Maryland, you are fooling yourself.
ReplyDeleteThey imported that new reporter and I think he's no better than the last hack.
ReplyDeleteJoe you will soon control the Government and the media. There will be no stopping you! You will be able to do anything your heart desires, I am so excited for you
ReplyDeleteSBY News found and created a useful niche, and has continued to improve.
ReplyDeleteDT, and other newspapers, lost their exclusive AP/UPI/Reuters feed to the Net; very little reason to buy a newspaper to get what you could have read hours or days earlier online.
DT completely fell down by largely abandoning local reporting that was comprehensive and covered the array of topics most have an interest in.
Cutting staff and only hiring cub reporters with inadequate skills has come back to bite with a vengeance. And all that is before the editorial/political manipulations.
If they would just print the real news, instead of the leftist trash they are spewing out over there, the circulation would increase by leaps and bounds!
ReplyDeleteI canceled my DailySlime subscription over 4 years ago, after having been a loyal subscriber for over 28 years!
They ain't what they used to be, that's for sure!
Are you listening, DT? Clean up your leftist acts, and maybe you can save the paper from total demise ...
If they ever want to be successful they need to do some investigative reporting. People want real stories about real people in the communities in which they live. We are tired of reading court cases that have been tried and closed. Real newspapers report stories before, during and after the trial. The DT's sorry excuses for not reporting is that they don't want to hurt the investigation. Is this the way the national news operates, absolutely not. The news comes first, the police are big boys and can handle the investigations just fine no matter what the press reports.
ReplyDeletePrint something interesting for a change. Investigate political corruption for instance, expose government waste, stop covering up for the local elected officials when they screw up. Report the truth and you may sell some papers.
ReplyDeleteExpose mayor Ireton for what he did to three innocent women in the ladies room at Mojo's.
ReplyDeleteYES 10:35...someone must come forward or he will continue doing what he did that night. Who is next? Your daughter? Mine? Our grandchildren? This guy is a freakin pervert!!!
DeleteWhy don't you pansies just come out and say what happened at Mojo's instead of beating around the bush? Ireton went in the ladies room and wouldn't leave when asked. Instead he whipped it out in front of these women and used the toilet. There, it's been said, again. Happy now?
DeleteI don't get the praise some people have left for him. If he is as talented as you few people think, then why was his paper so based and filled with articles by the AP?
ReplyDeleteThe Daily Times can be saved. They need to hire several local writers and give us more local news. Why does Joe know that Teresa Gardner is a psycho, but DT does not? Why does Joe know about what happened in Mojos, but the DT either doesn't or lacks the spine to print it? Why does Joe know Ireton has taken Council's ideas and claimed them as his? Where is the creditability and holding Ireton to task? How does Greg allow Ireton to claim the $16 million surplus without proof? In short, Greg sucked. Probably a nice guy, but totally inept as a journalist.
11:50 - They may not be able to be "saved" as you claim.
ReplyDeleteAs far as hiring several local writers, those of us who are talented local writers and attempted to work for them were not only paid minimal wages but were also forced to write only the bias news they wanted printed so that suggestion of yours will definitely not work.
Lastly, in most cases it is not a matter of Joe "knowing" more than our local media. It is a matter of Joe publicizing ALL of the critical news items that this area's residents needs to be aware of. The media withholds and covers up a substantial amount of news items from the public regarding people they favor and want to protect.
Joe posts the TRUTH, and the truth often "hurts" the area's prominent people that the other media outlets favor but in most cases it "helps" us area residents knowing what the facts are.
Greg has done what he was told to do at the Times.
ReplyDeleteThe MSM has gone social and liberal . They more or less have you by the grapes , one might say.
He will learn the truth has set him free.
This site is what newspapers n tv news used to be like! now with big corps running the news outlets the news is bias and the people are tired of half truths lies n left spin ! Gannet has proven they are not for the people but serve the marxist agenda ! we need to continue the pressure on DT to be truthful or they will continue to be fishwrap
ReplyDeleteHey Gannett:
ReplyDeleteWhy did it take so long?
Will he now become Ireton's full time campaign manager?
ReplyDeleteNone of the media outlets want journalists, they want sensationalists because that is what idiot people want in their lives, more sensationalism, not the facts. Greg's departure from the Daily Times will be felt all the way to the accounts receiveable office.
ReplyDeleteHow do we fire you?
ReplyDeletehe left to be Jimbo's campaign manager! lol
ReplyDeleteIt's been over 30yrs since I purchased or even looked at a Daily Times, even back then it was clear, without dought, they were bias and a propaganda machine. Far far more than just putting their spin on things. To purposely hide and distort the truth...is deceit! For many years they printed and spread their deceit, to deceive is to lie, to lie is to cheat and steal. If it werent for their years of deceit who knows how much better our area, our City would be, printing the truth about crooked politicians would have kept them from having control, exposing true crime rates would have prepared citizens to better protect themselves....who knows how many lives could have been saved. If this town and County had not been deceived for so many years....we might have had business friendly representatives, instead we are taxed into a ghost town with few jobs...only to be taxed even more. If I had my way, Bassett, Gannet and all who had a hand in the propaganda machine would be charged and tried as terrorist, their lies and deceit like bombs from a distant enemie destroying bits of our city and county, destroying businesses and infrastructure one bomb at a time...
ReplyDeleteThey are reaping the seeds they have sown!

ReplyDeleteI beg to differ with the staus quo as to the sin that has been committed against Greg Bassett. Him and Steve Hammond share the dubious distinction of being a pair of libralistic sissies. Neither of them has EVER had the stones to report the news on Delmarva based on its own merit.
The next time either one of them take a shower they should reach down between their legs, take a firm grip on their anatomy and realize the object of why MEN have them!!!
You are in life a hero or victim of your own devices and certainly aligning oneself with Jim Ireton is the kiss of death in any situation!! If there is any justice in the universe, maybe I'll
live long enough to see ALL the pigs go to slaughter!!!!
Good riddance... he was a true jerk
ReplyDeleteI used to write a lot of letters to the editor. Granted my grammar isn't the best but my letters had substance, a lot of people I know always complimented me on my letters.
ReplyDeleteIt's when the paper crossed that line into fabrication that I ceased writing and that was many years ago. To this day friends still say they miss my letters to the editor.
That was free bacon for the paper, they trashed me, my good name and friends that have worked hard to try to better this city. The Daily Times stabbed the heart of their own creation.
Anon 5:19, Your an idiot!
ReplyDeleteKarma has now made the full circle.
ReplyDeleteI am SO happy to hear this!
ReplyDeleteTo those of you who think Greg Bassett is all that, you've obviously never been a victim of his.
He got fired because Gannet FINALLY realized that Greg Bassett was doing nothing but yellow journalism!
He has stepped, or stomped on people all over Delmarva who have tried to do GOOD things for people and community!
He has also misquoted SO many people in the paper over the years, intentionally, just to create a story that didn't exist!
I know this because I am one of those people!
Good riddance Greg Bassett. I wasn't aware your wife had left you but I guess I'm not surprised since you're both like two peas in a pod as far as I'm concerned. She's not much better than Greg. She's stomped on quite a few people herself.
Her day will come as well!
What goes around comes around, to the Bassetts too!
Anon 8:50, why do u say 5:19 is an idiot?
ReplyDeleteI stopped getting the DT years ago because I could'nt stomach the constant liberal propaganda. I was very happy when the SBY news blog appeared. I am also tired of hearing the constant unrelenting drone of CBS/WBOC lefist propaganda especially concerning gun control. I have switched to WMDT lately even though they are also leftist. You can hear about something besides Newtown/gun control on that channel's news. The news should be the news, not constant brain washing.
ReplyDelete10:19 - I agree. I, too, am one of those people who have felt trampled upon by BOTH Bassetts. I never like to see anyone lose a job especially when they have school aged kids, so I'll leave Greg alone. Mrs. B, on the other hand, has been a snarky, condescending social climber ever since she lost her job with Gilchrest.
ReplyDeleteFellow blog readers, let us not bash Greg Bassett for printing falsehoods and poor journalistic practice and then state things about his personal life that are flatly untrue. Greg and Cathy are married, living together, and terrific parents of exceptionally good children. To imply otherwise is not only false, it is rude and unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteThe intellect of the commenters are clearly reflective of their host. Read it and laugh.
DeleteDELETE THIS BASSETT...LOL
ReplyDeleteSo... What did Ireton do in Mojo's?
ReplyDeleteClif Note addition plz...
Thanks
Maybe with him gone they will stop printing all the leftist garbage of Geoff Smoot, Longo the stupid Schmid woman from Ocean Pines and the rest of those liberal nuts. Based on the letters they write and the comments they make you would think we live on Montgomery Co. The act like they are the majority around here and based on the amount of their crap that the Times publishes the Times must also believe this is Montgomery Co. Please hire someone to be more balanced at the Times
ReplyDelete01-17-2013
ReplyDeleteMy hat is off to ALL who have had the stones to speak up. The reason I'm NOT a Bassett fan is just because of those lame brains in the Sunday "What do you think column". Him, WBOC, or the other Liberal rag Baltimore Sun, would never let ANYONE who had dissenting opinions voice theirs in rebuttal of the "bleeding hearts" you mentioned above. If I thought I had to adhere to or take to heart ANYTHING that collection of intellectually bankrupt idiots ever said I'd take the black pill right away! What a crew of losers with way too much time on their hands!Hopefully if this Country is ever invaded they will be in the first wave of prisoners taken and see if they and Bassett and Ireton can TALK their way OUT of that!
There has to be more to Bassett getting fired afterall he compliments Gannett perfectly with his own leftist propaganda. Remember it was a Gannett owned newspaper in NY that published the gun permit holders.
ReplyDelete12:08 I'm sure your intellect is so superior to the commenters here. Liberals always assume they are way above anyone that would actually question the establishment (far left liberals). You are a sheep. Sheep are not known for their vast intellect, baahh, baaahh, bahh, ect.
ReplyDeleteThe DT is not journalism! It is a joke! Every story written locally has misspelled words, grammatical erorrs, and punctuation mistakes. Even Greg Bassett's own editorial "Recalling the heart of WKHI-FM" (Wednesday, January 9, 2013, page A8) had a spelling error in the first and second sentences! If the executive editor's own writing has errors, he is not able to see the multiple errors in every other article in the DT. Maybe a new executive editor will have an English and Journalism degree?!!!! We can only hope!
ReplyDeleteMr/Ms "Intellect" is a classic example of when the message can't be attacked then attack the messenger. Liberals do this all the time because they are constantly being proven wrong and they hate it.

I wish someone would do an entire investigative report on this and let the voters decide if this is who they really want running the city. Force him out. Protect the innocent, they are the victims.
It is hard to sell news. Things change. Clocks, cameras,VCRs, are example of how technology has changed some things to make them obsolete. Most news by paper or radio or online is from an online source. It is not original.
ReplyDeleteDT online cannot even get the weather correct. I've compared DT weather to the weather channel every day and DT low temperatures are always at least 5 degrees lower than the weather channel. Why? Where do they get the inaccurate forecasts? If they can't get the weather right, why would I believe the news stories.
ReplyDeleteHow do we fire you?
ReplyDeleteJanuary 17, 2013 at 7:39 AM
You need to click the little red 'x' at the top right corner of the page.
Poof! He, and everyone else, will be gone.
If they can't get the weather right, why would I believe the news stories.
ReplyDeleteJanuary 17, 2013 at 9:51 PM
Ordinarily I would say that there is a big difference between the weather and facts of a story. BUT, this is the dt we are talking about so...it's safe to say you can't believe ANYTHING that appears in that paper.
Greg gave me my first job out of college as a copy editor. He taught me so many skills about both the world of journalism and being a professional in general. On top of that, he offered my boyfriend -- now husband -- a sales job in the middle of the recession after months of being laid off. We have both been forever grateful to Greg.
ReplyDeleteMany people who are brave enough to post comments on this blog have no idea what it's like to work in the media industry these days. Even I have cut and run in favor of a more stable, higher-paying communications job, despite my enjoyable beginning at the DT. Just like I wouldn't dare publicly insult the careers or decisions of those in industries -- medical, construction, even politics -- I don't understand why there are those that think they can criticize someone in the media. Shame on you.
I sat here and read these old comments about my brother and laughed my head off!!! What fun it is when ignorant people try to be intelligent!!! Gannet owns the DT and there are restrictions on how, what, and when and anytime something is owned by a corporation that large there is no such thing as freedom if speech...
ReplyDeleteI don't know why people feel the need to be so nasty about other peoples misfortunes...my brother gave his life to the DT and put up with a lot...from the time he was 17 years old that paper meant everything to them...
Anyone who thought he would be replaced by someone local is inhaling laughing gas...don't you know the way to do things is to bring in a stranger who knows nothing about the area????
Instead of being so critical and condescending be a bit empathetic...you do not have to like someone but you don't need to bash them either!
People who enjoy seeing others suffer are nothing but small-minded and cruel. I think some of these posters need to sign their names and read the Bible.
Proud to call Greg Bassett my brother!!!
