Maryland is joining the Big Ten, leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference in a shocker of a move in the world of conference realignment that was driven by the school's budget woes.
The announcement came Monday at a news conference with school President Wallace D. Loh, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and athletic director Kevin Anderson.
"The membership of the Big Ten enables us to guarantee the financial sustainability of Maryland athletics for a long, long, long time," Loh said. More
This is fine as long as there are not taxpayer consequences.Sports used to be considered unnecessary extras, or hobbies.To me personally they still are.If this can be accomplished without affecting finances outside of the university go for it.I keep hearing $50,000,000 as the cost of this change.My life does not depend on the sports programs at UMD.
NOW, WHO WILL PAY FOR ALL THE NEW STADIUMS AND BASKETBALL COURT AND ALL OF ALL THAT IS NEEDED FOR THE MAMBERSHIP IN THAT CONFERENCE. THE STUDENTS OR THE MARYLAND TAXPAYERS?
Big Ten is paying most of the $50M as a signing bonus. Past year each team in the Big Ten got over $24M from TV contracts. They expect to make more with the Wash/Balt. TV market and also Rutgers in the New Jersey/New York market. Terps had to cut 7 sports this year because of funding shortage. They will most likely be able to reinstate them in the future now with this new program.
