Long Road to November on Same-Sex Marriage

Frederick County residents on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate are preparing for a struggle with the news that Maryland residents will vote on the issue in November.

The Maryland State Board of Elections announced Tuesday that a petition effort had gathered enough valid signatures to put to the test a law legalizing gay marriage.

With 109,313 signatures accepted by elections officials, petitioners far exceeded the 55,736 names needed to trigger a referendum. An unofficial summary from the state elections board reported that 4,724 of the approved signatures came from Frederick County.
