Federal Judge Imposes Racial Quota on FDNY, Responding to Minorities Who Failed Entrance Exams

A federal judge is ordering the New York City Fire Department to implement racial quotas to address grievances from minorities who failed entrance exams.

On July 5 in Brooklyn, Nicholas G. Garaufis, a Clinton-appointed judge for the Eastern District of New York, issued a ruling that requires two of every five newly hired fireman to be black and one of every five, Hispanic -- until the department has fulfilled the court-ordered quota of 186 black and 107 Hispanic hires.

The ruling allows back pay -- totaling an estimated $128.7 million -- for minorities who failed written tests.

  1. Yep, that's how you get quality officers.

One of the biggest problem today with this country. Can't take the best candidate, look around at the results.

  2. Yep. Lower the bar, that's the way to make things "right". These people are insane. If you can't pass a simple written test then you are not qualified for the job plain and simple. I don't suppose their pay will reflect their lack of knowledge/ability will it? This is huge step AWAY from equality. Call it what you will but I see more racism in this blatant disregard for common sense than in anything Jesse Jackson has been upset about in twenty years! Bigots.

  3. Absolutely absurd. Our first responders should be the best of the best regardless of race or ethnicity.

  7. the government started it years ago, and look where that has gotten us; used to be you had to score roughly 93% on a civil service test. the 'numbers' weren't being met, so they dumbed down the test to meet the 'numbers'. now they are lowering the standards even more. so sad!

  8. When it pays more to fail a test than to do well on it, we have lost the ballgame.
