Riot Crew Handles G-8 protest

When hundreds of protesters descended from tour buses onto Main Street on Saturday, law enforcement agencies put their riot plan into action.

Sheriff's deputies and state troopers lined the street, clad in riot gear, with plastic masks and shields. They had been preparing for this since President Barack Obama announced in March that the G-8 summit would be at Camp David.

Four miles away from Camp David, Thurmont Police Chief Greg Eyler watched the busloads of protesters fill the town square to demand a change in government for Ethiopia. They said they have not been able to get their message out, and they came to Thurmont because the media were there.

They decried Obama's decision to meet with Ethiopian representatives. Many were political refugees whose families and friends continue to live under a repressive government, they said.
