Caterpillar Corporation announced a jobs expansion package last month on a scale befitting of the giant earth-moving equipment they manufacture. Over 4000 jobs will return to the U.S. Of those, 1400 new jobs will be created in just one new manufacturing facility, coming back home to the U.S. from Asia.
Imagine the profound impact a new Caterpillar factory in Baltimore, Cumberland or Salisbury would have for skilled machinists, electricians, and pipefitters. It would have created work for Sparrows Point and new outbound cargo for railroadmen, teamsters, and longshoremen in the Port of Baltimore.
Its economic ripple effects would have created jobs that would have an immediate and durable impact on every metric by which modern economies are judged - on everything from reducing the state's unemployment rate, to raising median incomes, to improving the quality of life.
But it will not happen here. These jobs are going to Georgia, not Maryland.

It's okay. O'malley trip to India is going to bring all kinds of business deals and jobs to Maryland-millions and millions of dollars worth of business which will create more jobs-ain't that what he said?
ReplyDeletewhy would any buisness or anybody period..want to come to maryland??
ReplyDeletenot a business friendly state for business...
ReplyDeleteI think the reason they went to Georgia is because of tax in Maryland that O'Malley keeps raising because he never heard of a budget. because a business cost a lot and business try making a good amount of money but as the tax goes up the less chance of business coming here
ReplyDeleteThe point missed in the story is that the jobs are leaving Illinois for Georgia.
ReplyDeleteMaryland is using the same business model that Illinois uses.
Businesses are leaving Illinois in droves because of the heavily union influenced job atmosphere.
Libtards just plain don't get it.
Unions, utility costs, real estate, wages, etc. all figure in. Maryland can't compete.
ReplyDeleteA company that size wont come to Maryland. Its to costly to build from the ground up and to do business here.
ReplyDeleteYou can forget about Caterpillar coming to Maryland.
ReplyDeleteAfter what Conway proposed with the 'Fair Share Health Act' to Wal-mart - the word on the street is to stay the heck out of Maryland.
Socialization is the very last thing that Caterpillar wants. I believe one of the current CEO's of Caterpillar is a former official of Haliburton. And we all know what Haliburton did in Maryland - got the heck out of here.
Also - don't forget what BP did up in Frederick, MD. They closed the doors, tore down a brand new building, and announced closure of their entire operation.
It is a no-brainer for prospective businesses - stay clear of Maryland. Businesses are 'fair game' for annialation.
Thats like the Walmart distrubution center in Westover.Does anyone know what the hold-up is?
ReplyDeleteMaryland is in the top SIX for taxes. AQ business would be stupid to even think about moving here. Lower the Tax rate to put us somwwhere in the middle of the pack and we will beging to see a movement to Maryland. Believe it or not, lower taxes will make the State more money. Raise them and the State will continue to loose.
ReplyDeleteRemember when Salisbury had an "Industrial Park" ? It has been a long time but at one time we actually had large companys come here and they provided alot of people with good jobs. So Sad
