John started as the first IT Director for the City after they broke away from the County. However, lack of funding left Mr. Wright with a difficult situation referencing getting the assistance needed to complete the vision the City implied back in October of 2010 when Mr. Wright was hired.
It says an awful lot in this economy when someone in this kind of position walks away but it's good to see some people do the honorable thing.
The City has been subjected to very difficult times lately trying to replace these kind of positions. I attended a work session Monday night where Mayor Ireton brought up the difficult time the City is having replacing Pam Oland. Her job was finance, purchasing AND human resources. The Mayor kept saying they can't find someone qualified for all three positions at one time and wants the Council to split those departments up again the way it used to be. My immediate response was, well, Pam Oland wasn't qualified for it either, what's the problem.
Nevertheless, another position opens up, finances are tight and we'll have to see if they can fill this position on top of the others, including a Fire Chief.

ReplyDeleteHe's tried to blame everything on the council. Maybe the top dogs are leaving after just a year or so because Ireton sucks to work for.
They talked of paying this position $90k, plus benefits, and hiring a 2nd technician. Being in the industry, I knew it could be outsourced for less.
ReplyDeleteWell, it looks like the city saved money by shortchanging themselves. I guess the systems that account for money, provide transparency to the citizens, and make employees productive isn't very valuable in their eyes.
5:10, well what did they pay and did they hire a second person?

Anon 6:11 - Knowing what the City pays its employees, I seriously doubt that he made anywhere near 90K. You must be thinking about the county.
ReplyDeleteWith all these positions open at the top, you would think that they could save enough money to give the rank and file a raise for once. They are the ones doing all the extra work anyway.

ReplyDeleteyou know i worked for the City of Dabury for 31 yrs.and you know it really sucked overworked for sure.if the public really knew the whole story of what goes on behind closed doors.the bury would be swallowed up by the Wicomico Poopie River.by the way i work for the county now it 's not much better but it pays the bills.the city & county should unite to one large entity and get unionized. you will get better pay and employees would have collective bargaining rights look at the big cheese (Shariff Lewis)that runs the WCSO.i'm glad i retire in April.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with just promoting from rank and file is the same problem with promoting Rick Hoppes. There are specific qualifications for the job, such as college degrees. If they don't meet the standards, the council cannot approve them.
ReplyDeleteEverybody seems to think the Hoppes problem is about a degree. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they wanted somebody who is more conservative with money. Who knows? That's why people get elected, to make those decisions.
They probably know things we don't. And if I was applying, I wouldn't want them running their mouths to people about why they didn't want me.
