Casey Anthony Does Not Have To Report For Probation Thursday

(CNN) -- Casey Anthony will not have to return to Orlando on Thursday to start serving probation for a check-fraud conviction, according to a judge's order released Wednesday.

Anthony will not have to start serving the probation until there is an emergency hearing so that a judge can address complaints from Anthony's attorneys about the probation, according to court documents.

Bubba Smith Dies At 66

Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1967 NFL draft who later found fame as an actor, has died at the age of 66.

After ending an All-American career at Michigan State in 1966, Smith was taken first in the draft by the Baltimore Colts. He played on Baltimore’s defensive line for five years, then was traded to the Oakland Raiders, where he played in 1973 and 1974, and finished his career with the Houston Oilers in 1975 and 1976.

The 6-foot-7, 265-pound Smith was one of the biggest players of his era. He won a ring at Super Bowl V and went to two Pro Bowls.

Teen Yells "Jump" To Suicidal Man, Fined $150

SALEM, Mass. - A Massachusetts teenager who yelled "jump" to a suicidal man on a rooftop has pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct.

David Duchesne was fined $150 in Salem District Court on Tuesday.

Feds Bust Child Porn Ring; 52 Arrested

Seventy-two people have been charged in an on-line global child pornography ring, a federal law enforcement source said Wednesday.

The official said 52 of those charged have been arrested.

Internet Explorer IQ Report Was A Hoax

(CNN) -- A report claiming Internet Explorer users scored lower on IQ tests than users of other Web browsers turns out to have been an elaborate hoax.

The report, supposedly based on a survey of 100,000 Internet users, was released last week by what appeared to be a Vancouver-based, Web-consulting firm called Aptiquant.

Major news outlets -- including CNN, the BBC, NPR, CNET, Forbes and London's Daily Mail and Telegraph -- reported the story last week, as did multiple technology blogs.

Federal Budget 101

The U.S. Congress sets a federal budget every year in the trillions of dollars. Few people know how much money that is so we created a breakdown of federal spending in simple terms. Let's put the 2011 federal budget into perspective:

U.S. income: $2,170,000,000,000
Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000
New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
Recent budget cut: $ 38,500,000,000 (about 1 percent of the budget)

It helps to think about these numbers in terms that we can relate to. Let's remove eight zeros from these numbers and pretend this is the household budget for the fictitious Jones family.

Total annual income for the Jones family: $21,700
Amount of money the Jones family spent: $38,200
Amount of new debt added to the credit card: $16,500
Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
Amount cut from the budget: $385

So in effect last month Congress, or in this example the Jones family, sat down at the kitchen table and agreed to cut $385 from its annual budget. What family would cut $385 of spending in order to solve $16,500 in deficit spending?

It is a start, although hardly a solution.

Now after years of this, the Jones family has $142,710 of debt on its credit card (which is the equivalent of the national debt).

You would think the Jones family would recognize and address this situation, but it does not. Neither does Congress.

The root of the debt problem is that the voters typically do not send people to Congress to save money. They are sent there to bring home the bacon to their own home state.

To effect budget change, we need to change the job description and give Congress new marching orders.

It is awfully hard (but not impossible) to reverse course and tell the government to stop borrowing money from our children and spending it now.

In effect, what we have is a reverse mortgage on the country. The problem is that the voters have become addicted to the money. Moreover, the American voters are still in the denial stage, and do not want to face the possibility of going into rehab.

Balanced Budget Amendment

I spent some time this morning and Googled “balanced Budget Amendment og 1974”, and found that we already have one that limits spending to the intake of the IRS. It’s beeen amended several times over the years with enough gobbledegook to choke a horse, but we have one. Why would Congress offer to vote in a new one without addressing the one we already have? Further, it also contains “Pay As You Go” clauses. From reading this bill, Congress has been breaking the law for the last 35 years, so why would we need another “BBA” passed this year? If Congress HAS been breaking the law for 35 years, is it not true that the funny money borrowed/ printed/ spent/due and payable an illegal act and not something the general public needs to be accountable for? We were certainly kept in the dark of all the amendments and adjustments made over the years, and certainly created the BBA on purpose to avoid the debt crisis we are undergoing today. I say the People are not responsible for this, but our Government is, and must be de- funded per fax code at that rate.

If A Town Can Go Bankrupt, Why Can’t The U.S.?

On the heels of a federal debt deal that no one really wants comes news that tiny Central Falls, R.I., (population: 18,716) has landed in bankruptcy court. City fathers cannot pay retirement benefits promised to municipal retirees, most notably former firefighters and police officers. So the city is going to court to take back what it had promised.

If only this was an isolated case. Last year, city officials in Prichard, Ala., (population: 27,578) stopped paying 150 retired town employees the benefits they once thought were secure. Pensioners in Prichard are going back to work, if able. Some cannot afford electricity and running water.

(NEW YORK) — U.S. shoppers kept on using their MasterCards in July even as uncertainty about the economy increased.

Spending with credit and debit cards bearing the company's logo rose about 12 percent in the U.S. compared with July 2010, Chief Financial Officer Martina Hund-Mejean of Mastercard Inc. said Wednesday.

About 2 points of that increase came from gas prices, which averaged about $1 per gallon higher than a year ago. Inflation also played a part in higher clothing and food costs, and more expensive luxury items due to record prices for gold and silver, she said.

Unemployment Rose In Nearly All US Cities

WASHINGTON (AP) - Unemployment rose in more than 90 percent of U.S. cities in June, mirroring a national slowdown in hiring.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose in 345 large metro areas. It dropped in 20 cities and was unchanged in seven. That's worse than May, when the rate rose in only 210 cities and a sharp reversal from April, when unemployment actually fell in nearly all metro areas.

Obama Vows To Pivot To Jobs As Republicans Question Track Record

With the debt-ceiling debate in Washington's rear view, President Obama emerged from the partisan rubble vowing -- as he has many times since taking office -- to devote his energy to jobs.

Americans "want us to get this economy growing and adding jobs," the president said.

The call echoed his 2010 State of the Union pledge to make jobs his "No. 1 focus." But since then, the economy hasn't exactly popped back into gear.

Since January 2010, the unemployment rate has averaged about 9.4 percent. On average, the economy is creating about 94,000 jobs per month -- well below the at least 125,000 needed to keep pace with population growth. Not only is the jobless rate on the upswing, but those out of work are staying out of work longer. The jobless typically are out of work for nearly 40 weeks, which is 30 percent longer than in January 2010.

Republicans are on the same page as Democrats when it comes to the goal of spurring job creation. But the parties are no more unified on how to do that than they were on how to cut the deficit. While the president repeatedly has said that jobs will be his priority, Republicans say he's fumbled that push time and again.

"Quit borrowing. Quit spending. Quit trying to raise taxes. Quit over-regulating and let the private sector flourish," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday, as party leaders on each side offered two starkly different visions for the recovery.

The debt ceiling agreement that came over the weekend will raise the ceiling by $2.1 trillion – enough to get this issue off the political table until January 1, 2013, which was Obama's desire.

The House called the bill the Budget Control Act. It was the budget out of control act. It is 74 pages long. No one in Congress had time to read it. Typical.

There will be guaranteed spending cuts of under $1 trillion over the next decade, meaning under $100 billion a year, with most cuts coming late in the decade.

Geithner Out Corzine In?

We had the story about a month ago regarding the future of TSec Tim Geithner. The suggestion was that post a debt ceiling deal good old Tim would be out of a job. That might be in the works.

I’m not sure who to blame for the fiasco in DC the past few weeks. I think a lot of folks have their hands dirty in this mess. But certainly Geithner deserves his share of the blame. Tim is also a vestige from another era. He is as responsible as anyone for TARP. The case for sending him packing is pretty strong.

The question is when, and who will replace him. I found something in a bond offering that gives a clue. I’ve not seen this kind of language before. I think it tells us where this is headed.

New State Law Makes Criminals Pay For Their Crimes

Dover, Del. Perhaps crime does pay after all.

At least it will pay the state in the case of those who violate state law in the future to the tune of an anticipated $4.25 million in additional revenue.

Gov. Jack Markell has signed a bill designed to make perpetrators subsidize law enforcement agencies. Markell signed House Substitute 1 to House Bill 143 at the Delaware State Troopers Association headquarters in Cheswold on Tuesday.

“The concept of this bill is simple: those who violate our laws should fund efforts to reduce violent crime in our state,” Markell said. “Because the cost of crime is high, the price for those who commit crimes is now higher.

Rare 1655 Coin Discovered On Fenwick Beach

FENWICK -- A local girl with a penchant for collecting sea glass made a rare discovery last week when she uncovered a centuries-old coin dating back to 1655 in the dune on the beach in Fenwick Island.

Last weekend, 9-year-old Ella Peters was combing the beach in Fenwick when she came across a rather rare find, an old coin dating back to 1655 that likely washed ashore sometime in the last 350 years or so. From a young age, Bishopville resident Ella Peters has had a fascination with beach combing and collecting sea glass, according to her mother, Gretchen Peters.

GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY ANNOUNCES MARYLAND WINS NATIONAL COMPETITIVE GRANT TO INCREASE COLLEGE COMPLETION

ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 3, 2011) – Governor Martin O’Malley today announced that Maryland has won a $1 million award from the Complete College America Completion Innovation Challenge.

A national organization that works with states to boost college completion, Complete College America established the grant competition to support state-level efforts. Governors from all 50 states were invited to submit proposals to win one of only ten $1 million Complete College America grants. Ultimately, 33 states submitted proposals, and the winners were chosen based on which states proposed the most innovative, high-impact initiatives.

“It is more important than ever to ensure that Marylanders earn their degrees,” said Governor O’Malley. “This grant award will go a long way toward helping our State’s higher education institutions implement strategies to eliminate barriers to completion and help students get the degrees they need to compete and win in the new economy.”

Maryland’s winning grant proposal focused on two key projects aimed at increasing the number of Marylanders who complete Associate and Bachelor’s degrees. The Developmental Math Course Redesign Project will transform remedial and developmental mathematics courses, particularly at community colleges and Historically Black Institutions (HBIs), so that many more students can move onto college-level mathematics in a timely manner. Research shows that remedial mathematics serves as a major roadblock to students completing their degrees. The ADAPTS (Associates Degree Award for Pre-Degree Transfer Students) Project will help students obtain their Associate degree if they transfer to a four-year institution before receiving that degree. Currently, more than 500 Marylanders earn their associate’s degree after they transfer from a community college to a four-year college or university.

The grant will be administered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) with a CCA state team that includes representatives from the Governor’s Office, the University System of Maryland, Morgan State University, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Maryland Association of Community Colleges, and the Maryland State Department of Education.

Governor O’Malley has set a statewide attainment goal that, by 2025, at least 55 percent of the State’s residents aged 25-64 will hold at least one degree. In addition, the State has joined a number of national policy initiatives that support Maryland’s state-specific goals, and partnerships with Complete College America, the Lumina Foundation, and the National Governors Association’s Complete to Compete Initiative.

Bank of America Proposes To Cut Outstanding Mortgages In Exchange For Broad Legal Settlement Deal

As had been rumored over the past few weeks, the WSJ reports [8]that Bank of America is actively pursuing a deal in which it would get "broad release" from legal claims against the lender (which if provisioned properly and in their full amount will destroy the bank) in exchange for cutting the amounts owed by borrowers. The bank is "discussing the proposal with state and federal officials who are prodding the country's biggest banks toward a multibillion-dollar deal to atone for foreclosure errors…As the discussions dragged on past the mid-June target set by U.S. officials, Bank of America began pressing officials for a speedy resolution, and it put forward its principal reduction proposal in one-on-one talks with state and federal officials. Meanwhile, negotiations continue with the banks as a group…Bank of America has told officials it wants protection against future litigation relating to mortgage servicing, said people familiar with the situation. In exchange it is willing to agree to a program in which troubled borrowers would have to prove financial distress to qualify for a writedown of the principal owed on their mortgage…The principal amount would have to be $1 million or less in certain geographic areas, one of these people said, and a reduction would apply to the bank's own mortgages and those its services for private investors…The more modifications the bank agrees to, the less it will pay in cash as part of an eventual settlement, one of these people said." So in summary, in order to protect itself from being destroyed in the courts, Bank of America is happy to spread the Bernanke Put love on all of its deadbeat clients, in the process further exacerbating the class warfare that is emerging to be the most successful legacy of the Obama administration.

Six Mid-Shore Post Offices On Potential Closure List

Post offices in six Mid-Shore communities are among more than 3,600 "low traffic" sites the U.S. Postal Service is considering closing.

The postal service announced July 26 it will study the closure of numerous post offices, with plans to establish "village post offices" in those communities.

On the Mid-Shore, the list includes post offices in Sherwood in Talbot County, Hillsboro and Henderson in Caroline County, Betterton and Massey in Kent County, and Crocheron in Dorchester County.

CHESTER A group of demonstrators from several counties on the Eastern and western shores gathered outside the Kent Island office of Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md.-1st, Tuesday to protest votes and positions taken by the First District congressman.

The demonstrators stood alongside U.S. Route 50 at the exit to Cox Creek Road carrying signs with messages like "Stop Default Insanity," "Save the Middle Class," "Harris is Killing Our Bay," "Represent Us in Congress," "One-Term Andy," and "Keep The American Dream Alive."

China Joins Russia In Blasting U.S. Borrowing

China, the largest foreign investor in U.S. government securities, joined Russia in criticizing American policy makers for failing to ensure borrowing is reined in after a stopgap deal to raise the nation's debt limit. Food Stamp Use Surges By Most In Years As Alabama Foodstamp Recipients Double In May

It appears that GDP data revisions are not the only thing that the administration enjoys fudging with in order to make the Chinese ministry of Truth seem like a real ministry of truth. After last month the data for April food stamp recipients [5]indicated the we may, just may, be reaching an inflection point in the foodstamp participation following a mere 60 thousand jump in those receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), today's just released data [6]confirmed that the BLS and BEA may have had a hand or two when determining this latest data series. Because the just announced jump in foodstamp usage of over 1.1 million is entirely out of the blue, and as the chart below shows, is the highest single monthly jump in Foodstamp participation since mid 2009, when eligibility requirements were adjusted. Yes, that's 45.8 million people (obviously an all time record) living on foodstamps which amount to the whopping $133.80 per person (an increase of $0.54 M/M) and $283.65 (an increase of $1.29) per household. Obviously, annualizing the latest monthly rate of 1.1 million people, it means that over 13 million Americans will live on about one third what the cheapest iPad costs in about a year.

But wait, there's more. Digging into the numbers reveals something pecuiliar: virtually the entire surge in monthly SNAP participation is due to one state alone: Alabama, which saw those living on foodstamps jump from 868K to 1.762MM. That's 36% of Alabama's population. Is this merely a grand rehearsal for the Jefferson County bankruptcy? Did the state see a mass surge in foodstamp use as hundreds of thousands are trying to game the system in advance of what will be an apic Chapter 9? And if yes, what does that mean for all the other states which will promptly follow in the footsteps of Jefferson County, and for US foodstamp participation?

City: Grand Prix To Plant Many More Trees Than It Cuts

A city official is defending allowing the Baltimore Grand Prix to cut down trees along the Inner Harbor race course, saying organizers have agreed to replace those trees nearly four times over, more than tripling the downtown's tree canopy in the process.

Beth Strommen, director of Baltimore's Office of Sustainability says she negotiated a deal with organizers of the Labor Day weekend street race, in which they got to cut down fewer than half the trees they originally wanted to remove to improve spectators' views of the racing.

New HIV Infections Up 50 Percent In Gay Black Men

CHICAGO — The number of Americans newly infected with HIV remained stable between 2006 and 2009, but infections rose nearly 50 percent among young black gay and bisexual men, U.S. experts said on Wednesday.

More than a month ago I walked into the Mayors Office and asked if I could personally use the power outlets on the Downtown Plaza to trim some of the bushes. While the Mayor never returned my message, he did get Public Works to go down there and trim the bushes, put new plants in the large pots and water them on a regular basis.

Fruitland Maryland National Night Out

So what's the difference between the Fruitland National Night Out vs Salisbury, good, clean unconditional fellowship between citizens and Law Enforcement.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to claim anyone within the SPD ever attempted to be in the spotlight, because they weren't.

The difference was, Fruitland didn't have the LOOK AT ME politicians roaming everywhere there was a camera.

This event had a TON of activities and more food than ever before. People were smiling, shaking hands, saying hello and just down right happy to see one and other.

The Police Officers were dressed down in casual clothing and truly interacting with the public.

It just didn't FEEL like a political event and that's why Fruitland probably had more people attend.

Budget Cuts Prove The System CAN Work With Less If You Use It Properly

The proof is shown above where grass was getting up to 3 feet tall and quite frankly the City of Salisbury was looking like crap!

Today, prisoners were brought in to beautify Rt. 50 by cutting and trimming the grass. Many citizens have been crying out for our government to take advantage of such resources and Thank God we're finally seeing democrats use their heads, for once. Strongly recommended by republicans.

From Police Officers to politicians, the City Park was filled with people getting to know first hand who they can turn to when it comes to crime.

Police Officer were cooking on the grill while politicians smothered the media coverage for LIVE shots and photo ops.

While this only happens once a year, it is a great opportunity for all to get more involved with the Law Enforcement community.

Milford Council Bans Wood-Burning Furnaces

Milford, Del.--If you have a wood-burning furnace in Milford, it’s time to get rid of it. As of August 31, not only are the heating units banned in Milford, but anyone who already has one has three months to remove it.

“It’s causing such a problem, and if you grandfather (the existing furnaces) in, you’re not taking care of any problems,” Milford City Council member Garrett Grier said.

And he’s heard a lot about those problems. The ban happened after “dozens” of people sought Grier and fellow councilman Steven Johnson out to complain about the smoke and smell from a wood-burning furnace that heats the home of David and Brenda Carron Southeast 2nd Street, in one of the first-ward neighborhoods they represent.

Like dogs peeing on a fire hidrant, gangs and wanna be kids are once again marking their territory, (or so they believe) throughout Salisbury once again.

The world's most extensive case of cyber-espionage, including attacks on U.S. government and U.N. computers, is set to be revealed Wednesday by online security firm McAfee, and analysts are speculating that China is behind the attacks.

Cite lack of financial transparency as major reason

Lewes — Citing personal reasons, seven current or past board members – including the vice president and two treasurers – have resigned from the Delaware Manufactured Homeowners Association. But those personal reasons appear to go deeper, cutting into the transparency of the organization that has been the voice of 130,000 manufactured home residents in the state.

Former Vice President John Walsh of Rehoboth Beach said several board members have questions relating to what he called was the organization’s first full-scale audit; they also want to discuss the audit during a general membership meeting, publish it on the organization’s website and formally release it to the public. Board members said for two months, questions about phone bills, mileage costs and even a cable bill have not been answered. They claim President Ed Speraw is stonewalling them.

Maryland Taking Bear Applications

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for an October black bear hunt.

The department will take applications through Sept. 2 to participate in a lottery to receive hunting permits.
DNR will issue 260 permits, with a quota of 55 to 80 bears.

Richard Marriott says he still has nightmares about crash, fire that led to drug discovery

A 44-year-old Ellicott City man who operated what police described as a sophisticated marijuana-growing operation discovered after a sports car crashed into his residence and caught fire will spend six months on home detention.

Howard County Circuit Judge Diane O. Leasure sentenced Richard Marriott on Tuesday to five years in prison, but suspended all but six months, and ordered him to pay a $1,500 fine.

It was a Sunday in September 2009, and Kareem Kelly Guest had spent the entire day assembling a bedroom for his 6-year-old daughter in his mother's Westport home. He'd been released from jail three weeks earlier and was making up for lost time.

He left the house after dark to pick up the little girl and show her his handiwork. But he never made it. Guest was executed shortly after stepping outside, shot twice in the back and four times in the head.

Guest had been labeled a rat, and everybody knew it, prosecutors said Tuesday in Baltimore's U.S. District Court, during opening statements in the federal trial of Antonio "Mack" Hall.

Americans waste an average of nearly $350 a year on wireless service, according to BillShrink, a service that compares rates for phone plans, among other products. China Urges US To Handle Debt Responsibly

BEIJING (AP) - China's central bank governor urged Washington to handle its debt responsibly, warning Wednesday that uncertainty in the market for Treasury debt might harm a global economic recovery.

China is the biggest foreign owner of Treasury debt and had appealed to U.S. leaders to protect its $1.1 billion in holdings during last week's debate over raising Washington's borrowing limit and avoiding a possible default.

In a statement, Zhou Xiaochuan welcomed the deal by American leaders to raise the limit but also called for Washington to avoid further steps that might hurt investors.

"Large fluctuations and uncertainties in this market would undermine the stability of the international financial system and hinder global recovery," Zhou said. The central bank took the unusual step of posting his comments in both English and Chinese on its website, clearly aiming to reach a foreign audience.
