One Heartbroken Kitty Lover

UPDATE:

Mr. Albero:
Last night at 8:30pm I received my first and only call in eight long days reporting a possible siting of my cat, Sam, about one eighth of a mile from my house.

I missed the call by 30 minutes and by the time I arrived Sam had been scared away by a resident and very territorial Siamese. The neighbor and I combed both his property, as well as those adjacent, but no Sam. Just as we were about to give up, my neighbor smartly suggested that I drive to the street behind his house where a wooded lot abuts up against his own.

Admittedly, with hope dwindling, I drove out of the Nevins Mill subdivision and doubled back to a parallel street whose name I don't remember. Within seconds, literally, of exiting my vehicle and giving a call out for Sam, a very dirty and emaciated black cat came running toward me meowing plaintively.

As promised, I have already provided a reward to my neighbor, but would like also, if you will allow me, to make a contribution in your name to a charity of your choice. Please advise.

Obama Administration Eyeing Gun Control 'Under The Radar,' Groups Warn

The Obama administration, after keeping gun control on the back burner for over two years, is prompting concern among gun rights groups that it's slowly starting to squeeze the trigger on tighter regulation. 

In the wake of the January shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others, President Obama remained mostly quiet on the firearms front as lawmakers clamored for new restrictions. But the president has since made a public call for tougher background checks. The Justice Department launched a series of meetings with officials and advocates to examine gun control policy. And while gun-control bills in Congress have languished, the administration has started to chip around the edges with its own proposals. 

"They're doing a pretty good job ... as Obama has said, 'under the radar.' There's a lot going on under that radar," Gun Owners of America Director Larry Pratt said, referring to a remark Obama reportedly made in a private meeting with gun control advocates. "They've shown us how much they are prepared to do through regulation."

Millsboro Man Charged In Fake Robbery

Location: Cash Advance, 19470 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth, DE

-Olin J. Vickers, 35, Millsboro, DE (Wearing a Disguise during the Commission of a Felony, Theft, Conspiracy 2^nd Degree)

Suspect 1: Tiffani A. Dunn, 30, Millsboro, DE

 

Suspect 2: Robert A.J. White, 45, Millsboro, DE

 

Resume:  

Rehoboth- The Delaware State Police have arrested a Millsboro man and have obtained warrants on a Millsboro female and her boyfriend after they faked the robbery of a cash advance business on Thursday.

 

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 26 at approximately 8:20 a.m. after troopers were called to the Cash Advance located in the 19000 block of Coastal Highway, Rehoboth, DE for the report of a robbery. Upon their arrival troopers were contacted by an employee of the business, Tiffani Dunn, 30, who advised them that the store had been robbed by a male suspect as she was outside the rear of the store preparing to smoke a cigarette. Dunn advised troopers that the suspect punched her in the head, knocking her to the ground. She then advised that the suspect responded into the store and removed an undisclosed amount of money from the safe area and then fled on foot.

 

After further questioning, troopers learned that the suspect in the incident was an acquaintance of the victim’s and lived with her in Millsboro. Troopers learned that the suspect was staying at the Red Mill Inn located on Coastal Highway north of Lewis, DE. They then responded to motel and took Olin J. Vickers, 35, into custody without incident. Troopers were able to recover the money stolen in the incident.

 

Further investigation by state police detectives revealed that Olin Vickers, Tiffani Dunn, and Dunn’s boyfriend, Robert White, 45, had conspired to fake a robbery of the Cash Advance and then split the proceeds. All three subjects reside in the same residence in Millsboro, DE.

 

Olin J. Vickers was arrested and charged with the above list of crimes. He was arraigned at JP Court 3 and then committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute for lack of $6000.00 secured bail.

 

Detectives have obtained warrants charging Tiffani Dunn and Robert White with one count each of Theft, Conspiracy 2^nd Degree, and Filing a False Report.  Their arrests are pending.

Millsboro Man Arrested After Burglarizing Home

Location: 30000 block of Conaway Road, Georgetown, DE

 

Date of Occurrence:   Friday, May 27, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

Resume:  

Georgetown- Delaware State Police have arrested a 33 year old Millsboro, DE man after he burglarized a home in Georgetown, DE yesterday afternoon.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Friday as a state trooper on routine patrol was driving in the 30000 block of Conaway Road in Georgetown. The trooper was flagged down by a pair of concerned citizens who advised him that there was a suspicious vehicle, described as a red Ford, parked on a dirt road in the area. As the trooper approached the vehicle, it fled onto Shortly Road, at which time the trooper conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle. Upon making contact wit the occupants of the vehicle, the trooper observed a male suspect, later identified as David A. Honeycutt, 33, attempting to hide jewelry and money under a seat in the car. Troopers took Honeycutt into custody. A subsequent check of the nearby residences revealed that Honeycutt had entered an unoccupied home through an unsecured rear window. Once inside, he proceeded to remove money and jewelry from inside of the house.

 

David A. Honeycutt was arrested and charged with the above list of crimes. He was arraigned at JP Court 3 and then committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution for lack of $8000.00 secured bail. The stolen items were returned to the homeowner.

Resume: David Honeycutt was also linked to an attempted burglary that had occurred in the 24000 block of Shortly Road that occurred on Friday, May 27^th at approximately 4:30 p.m. Troopers learned that Honeycutt had attempted to pry open a window and door of the residence, however, he was unsuccessful. He was arrested and charged with one count each of Attempted Burglary 2^nd degree and Criminal Mischief. He was arraigned at JP Court 3 and issued an additional $5,050.00 secured bail.

Detectives Investigate Possible Drowning

Location: Residence in the 2000 block of Brownsville Road, Harrington, DE

 

Date of Occurrence: Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.

 

Victim:  Charlotte Pritchard, 52, Harrington, DE

 

Resume:  

Harrington- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating an apparent drowning that occurred late this morning at a residence in Harrington, DE.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. this morning after troopers were called to respond to the report of a drowning that had occurred in the 2000 block of Brownsville Road, Harrington. Upon their arrival, troopers were advised that Charlotte Pritchard, 52, had been found unconscious in the back yard swimming pool of the home by her daughter. The daughter attempted to remove her mother from the pool and called 9-1-1. EMS responded to the residence and began CPR on Charlotte Pritchard and then transported her to the Milford Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her body was turned over to the medical examiners office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. It is believed that Charlotte Pritchard was in the pool for approximately 45 minutes before being discovered.

 

This incident is still currently under investigation. No further details are available at this time.

Let It Rain!

This morning WBOC stated there would only be a 20% chance of rain. Well, if you just got the storm we just got, it's 100%. Not that I mind that they were wrong, (if you want to call 20% wrong like I do) because we really needed it. If your grass is like mine, two weeks ago my property looked like a well groomed golf course. This morning it looked mostly brown because of the lack of rain. So the rain is a welcome sight. I guess it's just nice to have a job where your mostly wrong and you still get paid. Brian said yesterday we wouldn't see rain until at least next Wednesday. I hope he's on the Beach getting poured on.

Delaware Asthma Camp at A. I. DuPont

The American Lung Association in Delaware’s annual Asthma Camp will take place Monday, June 20 through Friday, June 24 at Nemours/A.I. du Pont Hospital for Children in North Wilmington.  

The week-long camp is for children with asthma, ages 7-11, and is one of three summer asthma camps sponsored by ALA-DE.  The camp will occur from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Aiming to provide asthmatic children with a safe, educational and fun camping experience, Asthma Camp will instruct participants on the treatment and management of their disease, including daily sessions on the effects of asthma, and camp activities including field trips, arts and crafts, and games.

Fruitland Police Station Official Groundbreaking

The vehicle was partially into an acceleration lane and partially on the shoulder with its four-way flashers activated. The vehicle was being operated by Samuel Toney of Duryea, Pennsylvania. Vehicle one, a Honda CRV, was traveling southbound, when for an unknown reason the vehicle traveled from the lanes of travel and collided with the rear of vehicle two. The vehicle was being operated by Stephanie Damon of Richmond Hill, New York. The eight occupants from both vehicles were transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries and were discharged shortly after 9:00 AM. The driver of the vehicle one was charged with negligent driving for the collision.

Help A Salisbury College Student Take His Best Shot At Walking Again

James  Cook of Salisbury, a 20 year old Virginia Tech sophomore, Naval ROTC Cadet, and 2009 graduate of Wicomico High School, suffered a spinal cord injury seven months ago in an accident while a passenger in a vehicle taking part in a VT Corp of Cadet event.  James and his family have been advised by doctors and surgeons that it is unlikely he will walk again.  Despite the enormity of what he now faces, James’ courage and strength of character won’t allow him to accept that his prognosis may be permanent or that his life plans and goals must be altered.

           

James retains a positive and determined spirit.  He is an Eagle Scout who has given many hours of service to his community including the landscape and construction of the Kratzer Memorial at the Salisbury Zoo.  James graduated summa cum laude from Wicomico High School with a 4.67 GPA.  During all four years of high school, he was a member of the JROTC and was selected his senior year to serve as the Battalion Commander.  He played junior varsity football, as well as varsity soccer and lacrosse.  He was captain of his lacrosse team during his junior and senior years.  He spent summers in high school as a Boy Scout counselor at Henson Scout Reservation and worked his high school senior and college freshman summers as a lifeguard in Ocean City.  He applied and was nominated to the Naval Academy his senior year of high school, but ultimately he accepted Virginia Tech’s offer to be part of their Honors Engineering Program and a member of their Corps of Cadets and Naval ROTC programs.  His dream was to graduate from VT with a degree in aeronautical engineering and to be a Naval Aviator.  Though his dream of flying planes for the Navy appears lost, James continues to think a great deal about his future.  He is making plans to return to Virginia Tech in the fall of 2011 as a civilian student.  He continues to fight for the chance to walk again.

Law Enforcement Through the Years

The history of the Salisbury Police Department is relatively short, compared to how long Salisbury has been in existence. Before 1881, the county sheriff handled all the legal problems. When Salisbury was incorporated, the bailiff for the sheriff at the jail was also the tax collector, clerk and police officer. The first person hired for additional “police” duties was hired in 1881 and was called a night patrolman. His main beat was Main Street from Division Street to the river.

         

The Court House was built in 1872 and a jail was built behind it in 1879. Before Salisbury had its own jail, prisoners had to taken to the Somerset County Jail. The single building jail was razed in 1936 and an addition was added to the Court House to house both prisoners and the sheriff.

         

The first official Chief of Police was appointed by Mayor Jehu T. Parsons on May 23, 1898. His name was Elijah M. Elliott. The whole force consisted of the Chief and three policemen or night watchmen. By 1907, the Chief had only two policemen on the force.

         

The picture above shows the entire force in 1921. Only five in the picture are policemen. They are Mayor Arthur W. Kennerly, Chief of Police Woodland Disharoon, George H. Williams, Fire Chief Fred A, Grier, Jr., Roland Cahall, George Sullivan and Sydney O. Furniss.

         

The Police Department’s first attempt to become motorized was in 1927. They purchased a motorcycle that was probably previously owned since it required repairs in early 1928. Their last attempt to utilize a motorcycle was in the 1950’s when one was purchased for use by Sgt. Paul Barnette. He rode it for many years and always led the Christmas parade. For this reason, he became known as Sgt. Santa Claus. I’m sure many can remember him roaring around town on his motorcycle.

         

As the City of Salisbury grew, so did the Police Department and the sheriff’s duties were confined mostly to the County. Since the city boundaries are so complex, many times the City Police and the County Sheriff’s Department have to co-ordinate their efforts in their pursuit of crime. Modern technology has made some things in crime fighting easier, but it is still a never-ending battle to keep our streets safe.

Eric Cantor Has Opponent

Chesterfield County lawyer E. Wayne Powell has announced his candidacy to unseat incumbent 7th District congressman and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA).

Announcing his candidacy, Powell said Cantor has never represented his constituents in the 7th District, but is more interested in "his own advancement and in promoting the objectives of others."

While it is unlikely that we would support Powell over Cantor, we have to agree that Cantor has been far more interested “in his own advancement”.  However, to claim that Cantor has never represented his constituents is absurd.  Eric Cantor is a fine man who unfortunately has allowed personal ambition to cloud his innate conservatism.

Eric Cantor was, and remains, a fine representative for the people of Virginia’s 7th District.  It is his performance in the House leadership that we quarrel with.

Harford BOE Approves Promotions AND Demotions

Following a lengthy closed meeting Thursday evening, the Harford County Board of Education approved a number of personnel changes sought by Superintendent Robert Tomback.

Included in those changes are new principals for Fallston, Aberdeen and Joppatowne high schools and the promotion of the current principal at Fallston.

Wednesday’s actions also finalized the demotions of the current Aberdeen and Joppatowne principals, Thomas Szerensits and Macon Tucker Jr., while also enabling Tomback to bring in someone from Baltimore County to head Fallston, one of the highest profile jobs in the 39,000-student Harford school system.

The closed session at the school system headquarters in Bel Air lasted nearly two hours, after which the board convened in a public session at 10 p.m. and acted on Tomback’s list of promotions.

A majority of the seven-member board had refused to vote on those promotions at the previous board meeting Monday, as some members said they wanted more time to consider the list.

Sources close to the board said Tomback’s plan to bring in an outsider for the Fallston job was a major point of contention and, when he refused to back off, it set the stage for an extraordinary confrontation with four of the seven board members that carried into Monday’s meeting and throughout the week.

Judge Orders UVA to Turn Over Global Warming Docs

The University of Virginia has been ordered to turn over documents produced by a former scientist studying climate change so a state judge can decide which documents are exempt from the state's Freedom of Information Act.

The American Tradition Institute requested 9,000 pages of documents, but the university turned over only about one-fifth of it. The conservative group disputes climate science showing manmade pollution is warming the globe.

A Prince William Circuit Court on Tuesday gave UVa until Aug. 22 to supply documents sought by ATI and conservative Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William four months ago. The order allows the university to file under seal any documents it considers exempt from FOIA while they're reviewed by lawyers from both sides.

The case is separate from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's probe into UVa's climate research by Michael Mann, who left Virginia six years ago to continue his work at Penn State University.

ATI and Cuccinelli both reject the dominant assertion by scientists that decades of heat-trapping carbon gas emissions into the atmosphere have increased the overall temperature of the globe.

Both are seeking files and correspondence between Mann and other scientists who, ATI says, "represent the climate alarmist perspective."

Universities and organizations of scientists have condemned the inquiries as efforts by oil and energy interests and the political right to intimidate climate researchers and stifle free academic inquiry into the issue.

Frederick County Joins Fight Against “DREAM Act”

Previously we posted that the Carroll County Commissioners had taken an official stand in favor of the petition drive to bring the “Maryland DREAM Act” to a referendum.  Now the Frederick County Commissioners have taken a similar stance.

If you support the petition drive, you can contact your county commissioners or county council members and ask that they also pass a resolution supporting the petition to force the “Maryland DREAM Act” to go before the voters.

Stretch of Cape Henlopen Beach Closed for Plovers

The first piping plover nest of the season has been discovered at Gordon’s Pond Beach in Cape Henlopen State Park, with the parents-to-be defending their area, and DNREC assisting their parental efforts by closing off a stretch of beach in hopes the plover nest and others that might follow this year can prosper.

To minimize disturbances to the tiny endangered shorebirds, a half-mile stretch of beach between the Observation Towers and the Herring Point crossover was closed to the public today, DNREC Wildlife Biologist Matthew Bailey said – with signs, twine and PVC posts marking the area as off-limits to human traffic.

“Closing off plover nesting areas is an established protocol every year at Cape Henlopen, and this closing is in the typical area that beachgoers are accustomed to,” said Bailey, who serves as coordinator of the Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Piping Plover Protection Program. “This area will remain closed until the last of our plover chicks are fledged, usually in late August.”
