They're Going To Do It Tonight!

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Maj. General Michael Walsh, President of the Mississippi River Commission, says he has decided to operate the floodway project at Birds Point - New Madrid Floodway.

The Army Corps of Engineers will begin blasting at 9 p.m. Monday.  The corps expects to see water flowing into the floodplain area around midnight.

There will be a five minutes horn blast warning and then a one minute warning before the blast
.
They will work through the night, breaking another section of the levee in the southern part from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday.  This would be a smaller outflow breach.

The final execution of the project will be in the upper portion between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A Situation Unfolding

Let's start at the beginning. Cairo, Ill. is in danger of flooding if their levees break due to the fact that the Mississippi River is now over 61 feet above flood stage. The Army Corp of Engineers has positioned 250 tons of explosives into position to blow 2 miles of levee on the missouri side to save Illinois. This will flood approx. 130,000 acres of farmland in a state that is already experiencing an unemployment rate of 12%. AND the soil will likely be unusable as farmland for the forseeable future because as the water rushes over the soil it will deposit 2-3 feet of sand and silt. The state of Missouri exhausted every legal avenue and the US Supreme Sourt said yesterday that it will not stop the Corp from the planned blast. It will also flood two towns in Missouri where the residents have been FORCED to evacua te.

Are Americans Really Buying Osama bin Laden Was Killed?

Photos are popping up proving images are fake. News agencies can't seem to get their stories straight. Heck, even CNN stated that they allegedly gave Osama bin Laden a 1 hour service, wrapped him in a white sheet before tossing him overboard out of respect for his religion.

So, I'd like to hear what you've heard and I'd like to know if YOU are buying this whole thing. The Donald Trump name has created quite a stir, forcing Obama to produce an alleged birth certificate many are still challenging. Is this a ploy to take attention away from from Obama?

So, lets hear what you have to say. Are you a believer, or not?

From CNN: "The disposal of -- the burial of bin Laden's remains was done in strict conformance with Islamic precepts and practices. It was prepared in accordance with the Islamic requirements,"

"We early on made provisions for that type of burial and we wanted to make sure that it was going to be done, again, in strictest conformance."

The religious rites were conducted on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea, with the ceremony starting at 1:10 a.m. and finishing at 2:10 a.m. ET, according to a senior Defense official.

"The body was washed and placed in a white sheet. A military official read prepared remarks, which were then translated into Arabic by a native speaker, The body of Osama bin Laden was placed on a flat board, which was then tipped up, and allowed to slide into the sea," the official said.

How bin Laden Was Hunted Down

How the US tracked couriers to elaborate bin Laden compound

First intelligence of a courier, then an extraordinary house with high walls — and no telephone or Internet. Bin Laden and a son are among five killed in a firefight.

It started with an unnamed courier.

Senior White House officials said Monday that the trail that led to Osama bin Laden began before 9/11, before the terror attacks that brought bin Laden to prominence. The trail warmed up last fall, when U.S. intelligence discovered an elaborate compound in Pakistan.

"From the time that we first recognized bin Laden as a threat, the U.S. gathered information on people in bin Laden's circle, including his personal couriers," a senior official in the Obama administration said in a background briefing from the White House.

After the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, "detainees gave us information on couriers. One courier in particular had our constant attention. Detainees gave us his nom de guerre, his pseudonym, and also identified this man as one of the few couriers trusted by bin Laden."

In 2007, the U.S. learned the man's name.

In 2009, "we identified areas in Pakistan where the courier and his brother operated. They were very careful, reinforcing belief we were on the right track."

In August 2010, "we found their home in Abbottabad," not in a cave, not right along the Afghanistan border, but in an affluent suburb less than 40 miles from the capital.

Bin Laden Shot In The Head By Navy Seals

Osama Bin Laden, the world's most wanted terrorist and mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, is dead. Four helicopters swooped in early Monday and killed Osama bin Laden in a fierce fire fight with American forces at his fortress-like compound in Pakistan. U.S. officials say the CIA tracked bin Laden's location, then sent in elite troops from the Navy SEALS to attack the hideout. Bin Laden was reportedly shot in the head.

Maryland's Judges Slash Sentences

Off-duty D.C. police officer Oliver Wendell Smith Jr. was fatally shot in Prince George's County 14 years ago.

The killers were caught and sentenced to long prison sentences. But Smith's family and other survivors of violence in Maryland say they are being repeatedly victimized by an obscure law that allows offenders to ask the trial judge to reopen their cases in an effort to have their sentences reduced.

Judges can choose to release offenders or drastically reduce their sentences even if they've been denied parole and have lost all court appeals.

"Every time I get one of these letters, I think, 'When will we get our reconsideration?' " said Oliver Smith Sr. "We were sentenced to life, life without my son, with no possibility of parole or reconsideration."

Murders, kidnappers and child molesters are among those who have gotten their time behind bars reduced under the Maryland law.

The results can sometimes be devastating.

Shawn M. Henderson stabbed three people yet had his sentence of 12 years shaved to 10. The judge's action, plus good-time credits, allowed Henderson to get out of prison after six years, despite the fact he had been denied parole. Two years after he was released in 2008, he shot and killed a Gaithersburg woman.

Of the 100 persons convicted of violent crimes whose sentences have been reduced since 2002, 78 were in Prince George's County, according to documents provided by the Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy. Ten more came out of Montgomery County.

Legislative Battles Reveal Cracks In ‘One Maryland’

Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, throughout his tenure has spoken of “One Maryland,” in which lawmakers and residents work across party and jurisdictional lines to accomplish common goals.

Yet the concept is proving easier said than done, as rural legislators frequently accuse the governor and legislators from larger districts of imposing their will on the entire state.

The state’s rural-urban divide was on display many times throughout this year’s 90-day legislative session, but was especially evident in the session’s final days as the House debated a proposed increase in the state’s alcohol sales tax.

Many rural Republicans saw the bill as a two-pronged assault on their districts: It would hurt businesses that have long relied on customers from bordering states such as Delaware and West Virginia, while returning most of the generated revenue to larger, more urban districts, including the city of Baltimore and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Maryland’s six largest jurisdictions — Baltimore city and Baltimore, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel and Howard counties — stood to receive $64 million of the tax’s first-year revenue for schools and school construction, while the remaining 18 counties — in more rural, conservative regions such as the Eastern Shore and Western and Southern Maryland — would split about $6.1 million, even though they make up 30 percent of the state’s population.

“It is a tyranny of the majority. They have the votes, and they couldn’t care less,” said Delegate Michael D. Smigiel Sr., who, along with Sen. E.J. Pipkin, a fellow Cecil Republican, runs the blog War on Rural Maryland.

Teen Joblessness May Hit Record This Summer

A record-low one in four U.S. teenagers will land a summer job in the coming months as a result of a still-poor job market and lost federal funding, according to a report issued on Monday.

As a consequence, urban studies experts said cities like Chicago -- where summer unemployment among African-Americans aged 16 to 19 years approaches 90 percent -- could experience a rise in street violence.

"Both national and local leadership continue to ignore the plight of youth who are most at risk for potential violence as a result of being left on the streets in the summer months when crime is at its most explosive," Chicago Urban League President Andrea Zopp said in a statement.

The summer employment rate among U.S. teen-agers this year was projected at between 25 percent and 27 percent, based on an analysis of four decades of employment trends by Andrew Sum of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston. That would be a post-World War Two low, while as recently as 2006 the teen summer employment rate was 37 percent.

Major Companies To Hike Prices To Offset Gas Prices

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Get ready for even higher bills. This week, several major companies say they’re hiking prices to make up for the rising cost of gas.

Adam May reports you’re about to feel the impact.

Brace yourself the next time you head to supermarket. Grocery shopping is getting more expensive. And gas is getting the blame.

Beef and pork prices are expected to rise 6-8 percent this year, fruits and vegetables up 5 percent cereals and grains up more than 4 percent. Others products from shampoo to toilet paper are climbing too.

“Ridiculous,” said one consumer. That’s the feeling among many now stuck paying at least $4 a gallon for gas.
“It kills my budget; it soaks up a lot of my money,” said a Maryland driver.

And even more frustrating for drivers: Major oil companies announce billions in record breaking profits.

How Maryland Compares On Pension Funding

The gap between the promises states have made for public employees’ retirement benefits and the money set aside to pay for them grew to at least $1.26 trillion in fiscal year 2009—a 26% increase in one year—according to a new report from the Pew Center for the States. Maryland ranks below more than half the states in its level of funding.

Was Qaddafi The Real Target Of The Strike That Killed His Son?

Benghazi, Libya - A NATO airstrike reportedly narrowly missed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi Saturday night, killing his youngest son and three grandchildren instead, according to a government spokesman, marking the coalition's most aggressive effort to end the regime.

That NATO forces may have killed four members of Gadhafi's family who had no ties to the government or military will likely renew questions about the legality and legitimacy of the international effort here, sanctioned by a United Nations resolution to protect civilians from a Gadhafi attack.

Throughout the month-long air campaign, NATO members who abstained from the resolution vote have said they were concerned that resolution was instead a subversive attempt by the U.S. and Europe to topple the regime. China called the strikes a violation of international law; Russia, India and Turkey have also condemned various NATO strikes here.

Regime officials said that Gadhafi and his wife were at the Tripoli home of their son, Saif al Arab, 29, Saturday when strike took place, but both escaped unharmed. In addition to Saif al Arab, three of Gadhafi's grandsons were killed, a government spokesman said.

Corporate America's War On Political Transparency

It’s a modest notion.

Companies that bid for government contracts should disclose their campaign spending, in order to diminish the likelihood that contracts are a payoff for political expenditures.

The Obama administration has indicated that it plans to impose such a rule, through an executive order. Ideally, the rule would prohibit contractors and lobbyists from campaign spending, but a disclosure standard is a very positive if modest step.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the trade association for big business, however, takes a somewhat different view.

“We will fight it through all available means,” Bruce Josten, the chief lobbyist for the Chamber, told the New York Times. “To quote what they say every day on Libya, all options are on the table.”

UPDATE: TANEYTOWN DEATH INVESTIGATION

(TANEYTOWN, MD) – An autopsy conducted on a Taneytown man found dead in his townhouse yesterday indicates he may have died as a result of an explosion, but the investigation continues into how and why the explosion occurred.

An autopsy was conducted today at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore on the body of Carey M. Landskroner, 44, of the 400-block of Red Tulip Court, Taneytown, Md. The medical examiner ruled Landskroner died from ‘mobile trauma’ which can result from an explosion. The medical examiner has not ruled definitively on a manner of death, but did narrow it to either accidental, or suicide.

Just before 5:00 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barrack received a 911 call from a neighbor of Landskroner who said he had gone to check on the man after not seeing him for a couple of days. The neighbor reported he saw an open window covered by a blind. He moved the blind aside and saw Landskroner lying on the floor.

Maryland state troopers and Taneytown Police Department officers responded to the scene. Upon entering the home, police found the victim deceased and observed that he had sustained trauma to his left arm, leg and side.

Troopers also observed evidence that indicated some type of explosion may have occurred in the home. There were holes in the wall and the chair near Landskroner had what appeared to be charring on it.

Crime scene technicians recovered what appear to be shrapnel pieces of metal pipe from holes in the walls. Similar metal pipe shrapnel was recovered from Landskroner’s body today during the autopsy.

Investigators learned through further interviews with neighbors that some of them heard a loud bang Wednesday night from the area of Landskroner’s home. He was not seen for a couple of days, which is what prompted a neighbor to check on him yesterday. The medical examiner told investigators today Landskroner could have been dead since Wednesday night.

A thorough search of the home was conducted by explosives experts from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and State Police investigators. No explosive material was found in the home, nor were any materials found that would indicate other explosive devices had been or were about to be constructed.

The investigation is continuing.
