The use of food stamps has soared in the D.C. region, but so has the cost of fraud, and Maryland now ranks second in the country in misappropriated food assistance funding.
The number of people receiving food stamps in Maryland has more than doubled since 2007 to nearly 677,000 as of April, or about 11 percent of the state's population, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In Virginia, use grew by 75 percent -- more than doubling in Fairfax County alone. In the District, two of every 10 residents now use food stamps, up by a third since before the recession.
The food stamp program more than doubled to $65 billion annually over the last five years and abuse and fraud now account for $2 billion of that, the USDA reports. The causes range from simple computer glitches to outright lying by applicants.

Get ready people , the worse is yet to come. I cannot impress upon you enough. This will make the great depression look like a recession.
ReplyDeleteFairfax County is loaded with illegals , food stamps are a way of life here. Some have more than 3 I.D.s , so they get 3 times the stamps.
Of course you have the regular minorities that do the same.
Part of the problem also is the fact that our society has turned into such a self-entitled frame of mind. It used to be that people were too proud to use foodstamps. There were many people who qualified for food stamps and refused to use them. Instead, they worked hard and provided for their families. Now, our society is so used to handouts that it's become a norm. No one sees a problem with receiving handouts if the government is going to keep giving them.
ReplyDeleteTHr politicians in these areas not only are aware of the problem, they actively promote, encourage, tolerate and recruit more recipients.Baltimore and DC and the surrounding counties are turning in to third world countries and because of the size of their populations they control the outcome in nearly every election. Good luck changing this trend.
