In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants Wins Final Approval; O’Malley Plans To Sign It

After a midday Senate filibuster temporarily delayed its passage, the bill granting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants was sent to Gov. Martin O’Malley for his promised signature Monday night. As the House of Delegates approved the final negotiated version of the bill on Monday night with a vote of 74-65, the student lobbyists sitting in the galleries on either side of the chamber burst into cheers. The finalized bill had passed the Senate with a vote of 27-19 less than an hour earlier.

In 2012, some of these illgals will be able to vote, so try as you may but they will keep the idiots in there.

  4. How in the world can anyone craft a law that states it's legal to give in State tuition breaks to illegal people? At the same time, the kids of military living in MD (even though they are legal) while their father is deployed, it is not legal if the family's official residence is somewhere other than MD.

  5. Every politician who voted for this, regardless of party, should be voted out, period!
Then people need to be put in who will repeal this!
I'm so sick of MY tax dollars going to people who are not even citizens of this country! No wonder our kids are not learning in school anymore. The emphasis seems to be on educating these ILLEGAL children!

  6. Well, first welcome to Maryland.

Second, thank what we teach in school, Democrats have changed everything and able to get a handle on all this by taking over schools and teaching institutions.

Finally, can we please anyone check on how other countries handle illegals. Yes if you want to come in come in LEGALLY like your father, grandfather before you.

You are NOT intitled to an education, job, money. WORK for it.Do it right, other countries are laughing at are dumbass politicians.

I know businesses, business man from India laughing their ass off because they make money here, send it tax free to their country. Bring more of their family over to US, buy more small businesses up and Monopolize on our stupidity.

    STOP IT NOW!

  8. Do you realize someone can move here from alaska, never pay a dime in MD taxes in their life, and be eligible for in-state tuition in nine months? It happens all the time. This bill actually requires the parents to pay taxes in our state, the kids to pay for and graduate community college first, but yet its still such an outrage?

  9. Omg, this really makes me angry. I could not get in county tuition at Chesapeake because I live in Wicomico county. Wor-wic did not offer the program I enrolled in, but Chesapeake did.
This country has gone so far over the edge in liberal ideology that is defies common sense. Just like the fact that non citizens can get business loans before a citizen. I could go on and on.....until my blood boils. The scales have tipped....America is no longer

  10. People get so angry about a bill that will realistically help one out of a million kids. I paid full price for college while plenty of other people got.grants, scholarships and government assistance but so what, get over it. Its life. If you live in MD its not like your kids are gonna pay while some immigrant goes for free. Stop whining about one little break that someone else might possibly get and go do some work yourself.

  11. 12:17 is a product of our education system for sure.

  12. Vote out whoever voted for this stupid bill. They still don't get the concept of "ILLEGAL". Hey, in theory, the politicians who voted for this bill would now be accessories to aiding an Illegal person evade deportation. Interesting.....

  13. 12:17 makes my blood boil and is definitely of this modern education system.

  14. 12:17...you are missing the point. Illegal is breaking the law and they are ignoring it. That's what everybody has a problem with and people like you that are causing our country to fall.

  15. 12:17 - You are clueless

I paid my tuition too without help from the Government or my parents. I also have paid taxes all my life to fund services, law enforcement, and public safety. What the Legislature has just done is approve the subsidy by all taxpayers for the advanced education of students whose families have and continue to break the law. If you have not noticed, our Government even uses the term "illegal" to describe them. One of the reasons behind managed immigration is public health. There are a series of immunizations immigrants (legal ones) must get when they enter our Country. By letting people simply walk across a border and assimilate into a community puts the general population at risk. Permitting this to continue is irresponsible. Rewarding the illegals with taxpayer money in order to get a vote is intolerable.

Now, given what it cost at even in-State rates for a college education, how is it possible for a family to afford this yet be viewed as an impoverished minority who can't pay taxes?

  17. Al, they do have to pay taxes for the child to be eligible to receive in-state status. It says it loud and clear that the parents must be taxpayers. I only agree with this bill because the said provisions that will actually make it very tough for anyone to qualify. If it were just available to all immigrants, I would not support it at all. After all, we have citizens of this country that live off the system for a.childs entire life while being a complete burden to the tax system, yet they are definitely eligible for in state status and all sorts of grants that they will never have to pay back.

  18. "they do have to pay taxes for the child to be eligible to receive in-state status. It says it loud and clear that the parents must be taxpayers."

Really? I quote below from HB 470 in which it states that SOME taxes only have to be WITHHELD sometime during the year prior to the student graduating from high school. If earnings are under reported then NO taxes will actually get paid. This means that a family can fail to report income for 18 years then do so for only a week or two to qualify.

    PROVIDES TO THE PUBLIC INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION DOCUMENTATION THAT THE INDIVIDUAL OR THE INDIVIDUAL’S PARENT OR GUARDIAN HAS HAD MARYLAND INCOME TAX WITHHELD DURING THE YEAR PRIOR TO THE INDIVIDUAL GRADUATING FROM A PUBLIC OR NONPUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THIS STATE;

Why can't a mother of a child whose father is on the battlefield in Afghanistan flip burgers for a week in MD and qualify for the same tuition rate by having taxes withheld? It's because "certain nonresident individuals" are excluded from the Bill even if they meet all the other requirements.

  21. Jesus loves all the children- legal or illegal. Thank goodness we are helping them get an education. Give them food, good clothes, electronics, a decent home and a salary so they can live comfortably while they study and attend school. Where are all the Christians who will sacrifice so that the misfortunate may live a better life??I am ashamed of you people who only think of yourselves.

  22. Oh my, Jesus stated we are to give 10 percent to the government but our government takes much more than that. Helping the poor we are required to do, but helping the criminals is not noted anywhere I read. The Democrats need them for votes and the Republicans need them for cheap labor; the rest of us have to put up with bed bugs and roaches b/c of thier illegal entry to the USA, and the new wave of Disease they bring like TB.

  23. No, Jesus said give 10% to the church and the church takes care of the sick and blind and so on. He also said render to Ceaser what is Ceasers meaning to pay your taxes. The whole problem is that we have to pay so much in taxes that people can hardly aford to pay 10% to the church. And the goverment doesn't want the church to have control of that money, so they started welfare.
